According to domain appraisal sites like Valuate, domain index and estibot my portfolio is worth half a million dollars. How is it that these single, double word, 3 character and big industry domains don't even fetch 1% of that? That's horribly inaccurate and misleading. Granted I've only tried flippa but still is there any such appraisal industry that's equally as dismal and horrible at appraising potential value?

Also, since Apple just bought Beats from dre how much would applebeats.net be worth.

Thanks, have a blessed day, and please help me to have a better understanding of this dumbfounded mystery to me!

Of course it is. It's meaningless nonsense.

The reality is that a domain-name is worth what you can sell it for. Emphasis on the word "you". It's about your own skills at indentifying, approaching and negotiating with the people to whom the domain may potentially have added value because of the nature of their own businesses.

It's not about "where you sell it".

It's about your own skills at indentifying, approaching and negotiating with the people to whom the domain may potentially have added value because of the nature of their own businesses. If those people don't know that it's for sale, then it doesn't matter where you sell it.

Maybe not, but they're trying to do something that can't possibly be mechanized/automated.

You're talking about it as if domain-names had some kind of "objective" value, but they just don't. What they're worth to you depends on your skills at selling them. It really is as simple as that!

    To whom?

To most people, not necessarily that much. And perhaps especially not to someone trying to sell it to Apple, because it has their own trademark in the domain-name, and they can probably take it from you any time they like, without paying a penny!

I have a sugggestion for you.

Get yourself on this mailing list, which is free and will help you to appreciate some of the fundamental realities about buying and selling domain-names. http://domainprofitsacademy.com/subscribe.html

But above all, don't imagine that making money in the domain business is about buying domains that have some "objective" value higher than you pay for them, which is realizable in profit simply by putting them up for sale somewhere and hoping buyers turn up. That isn't how it normally works. You need to know at least roughly who the people are to whom you can potentially re-sell a domain, and how to approach them, and how to negotiate with them, before you buy it. I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but "got domains" isn't necessarily a very good starting-position, for that business: "got domaining skills" is actually a much better prospect.

Second time I've bumped into you today Alexa, and great advice again...

A domain name may have inherent value, such as business.com, diets.com, etc. however you can make any domain worth money by building a great site...

Everything on the Internet is true. Right? Why would all the domain valuation sites drastically over estimate the worth of a domain?

Could it be that most of these valuation sites have links on them to domain registration services in the hope that you would click to register a domain thereby earning the site a commission?

Would it not be in their best interest to get their visitors excited about the value of every domain that pops up?

I wouldn't trust these valuation tools, they aren't accurate.

Well, how can they be accurate anyways? It all depends on finding the buyer who sees value in the domain name and wants to pay the price.
