Default Google Keyword Tool External Search Numbers

Dear warriors,

I need to refresh my mind about Google Keyword Tool External search numbers, for example if I search 'gardening tools' on it, it will give me 50,000 searches per month. but when I click phrase or exact the number will be decrease. and for some of other keywords it gives me 'not enough data'.

my question is what is actually those numbers mean to us? for phrase match number, is that the number of people who search on google with keyword surrounded by quotes? isn't that a exact match?

if so... I guess broad number is the true number, right? because I think MOST (not all) of people will search on Google without surrounding their keyword with quotes. what do you think?

one more thing, if we do article marketing which search volume we need to consider? is Local Monthly Volume or Global Monthly Search?

thanks,

Rob

Google has the definitive answer and full explanations in their help site at

https://adwords.google.co.uk/support...uk&answer=6100

In particular for Broad Match they say

"If your ad group contained the keyword 'tennis shoes', your ad would be eligible to appear when a user's search query contained either or both words ('tennis' and 'shoes') in any order, and possibly along with other terms. Your ads could also be displayed for singular/plural forms, synonyms and other relevant variations. "

In other words you are going to be paying money for clicks which are not targeted in any way - not a way to be profitable.

As regards local and global search volumes - it depends where 'local' is to you and where your articles will be showing.

Yes, I knew about adwords keyword match rule. but my question is if Google gave me 50,000 search per month on 'gardening tools', broad match, is that total number of people who search with 'gardening' + 'tools' + 'gardening tools'?

A broad match of gardening tools includes searches for:

where to buy gardening tools
tools for use in gardening
what tools are available to help me make money in the gardening business
Joe's Gardening company is staffed by a bunch of tools and I hate them

and so on. Phrase match would only include searches that include the exact phrase "gardening tools" somewhere in the search.

gardening tools are cool
does Lowes sell gardening tools?
cheap gardening tools manufacturers china
i love gardening tools

and so search like "i love tools for gardening" would NOT be included in the search count.

Also worth noting: these search counts are NOT Google-only. Just bear that in mind. The tool was created for Adwords advertisers and therefore it is most accurate for them, NOT for Google-only organic searches. I the PPC forum I posted my formula which as worked for me and my clients and students in calculating a more realistic search volume if you're trying to use the KW tool for Google-only organic results.

Steven got it right. That is why I tend to favor phrase matches and exact phrase matches over broad. Broad matches are just too broad and can be way out of your niche.

If you want targeted buyers, you need targeted phrases with high commercial value.

Indeed. Buying keywords and exact matching are more often than not going to produce your best conversions. You may get less traffic, but your traffic will very likely convert better.

Would you rather get 5,000 visitors a month on a broad match and have that traffic convert at a rate of 1.25% or would you rather target buyers and get 580 visitors per month on an exact match that converts at 16% because your ads are so targeted?

I gotta say - until I learned about Broad vs. Phrase vs. Exact matching, I pursued some VERY disappointing niches that I had high hopes for!

Broad matches will get your hopes up and very rarely deliver on those hopes. I say...stick with exact. You can only be pleasantly surprised from there!
