Safest Way To Deliver Ebook Securely

Hi all,

I know there is always the risk of piracy, but surely there is something better than just emailing a valuable ebook that Custmoer A then just forwards to all his buddies for free.

Are there any Wordpress plugins that mean the ebook can only be downloaded onto one device? I like kindle for that reason, but i dont plan to sell on Kindle solely.

I guess I could embed the book onto my site in a members area which means people could read it on their ipads etc, that could be a decent idea i suppose. But the book is over 100 pages, I cant really think of a user friendly way to just dump 100 pages of text on a website.

Thanks all

The safest way to keep your ebook from being shared is to read it out loud to your customers. There is software out there that will password protect and help with the distribution of your ebook , but I can see how you can prevent people from sharing it, once they have downloaded it.

Lock it in a PDF that's as secure as possible -- but if people want to share/forward it, there's little you can do to stop it.

My advice would be to turn it into something where sharing benefits you instead of harms you. Put plenty of references to content on your site, and put plenty of links to related affiliate products within the product. That way, if someone does simply forward the email on to someone else, you'll get website exposure, new readers, and even affiliate commissions. That's not such a bad deal, in my book!

There's really no way you can stop people sharing your eBook.
Include a password protect, they can always send over the password as well.

Hmm i think I will integrate the course material into my site then. Of course some people could share their password, but will reduce the risk of someone just putting my ebook on a forum in my niche.

Will also see if I can add in some affiliate links in a classy way. I didnt really want to do anything like that to turn the risk of piracy into a positive. As soon as someone starts aggressively up-selling to me I instantly dismiss the product as a marketing gimmick and want to be really authentic and honest in my product. Its part of my brand to give a no B.S approach to how to really excel in my niche.

    Thanks all for the input

Well, if you sell your ebook through JVZoo you can use their Protected Download feature. Just upload it to JVZoo and they handle the secure downloads.

It's not going to stop someone from sharing your file after they download it, but at least they won't be using your resources to do it. Also, they probably won't share JVZoo's download link because they'd have to share their own password, etc.

You could also use membership software on your own site and in addition put links in your ebook to important content there so that the only way they could get access is if they have a login & password.

Of course, if you wanted to get REALLY diabolical, you could put out an ebook for sale, create a special link that you share on every illegal sharing site out there, then collect the IP addresses of everyone who downloaded it from those sites. Then, block those IPs for every new product you put out.

It still won't stop piracy, but...

      Tommy,

Security of a digital product always has trade-offs with customer convenience and "usability." The more secure you make the download, typically, the less convenient your customer will find it to both make the download and re-use the product.

As others have said, there really is no 100% secure alternative. Once the product is in the hands of a human, that person has various ways available to copy, share, and even re-distribute your ebook if that is his desire.

So, you take reasonable security precautions, understand that there will be some leakage, don't lost sleep over it, and just move on. I personally don't think it's wise to inconvenience your buyers in order to have greater and greater levels of security for your product.

Don't put all your eggs in the same basket. If you put all the information in the PDF, you'll risk losing it all when it gets shared. Link out to videos, leave your email for further consultation etc. Of course if someone is hell bent on getting all of it for free, you cannot stop him completely, but if you spread out the information, very few will actually make efforts to get it all for free.

Don't worry too much about it. There's really nothing much to be done if someone really wants to share it out to others.

You could set up a members area, but that doesn't prevent people from sharing the login as well. In fact, just emailing the ebook directly might be more effective since they can't simply share a download page online. They'll have to take one extra step to upload it first.

If your content is really valuable, you could turn it into a video course or a physical copy book. Much harder to copy and distribute online

unfortunately this happens a lot of the time with e-books. you can always put your url in the footer so maybe someone who got a free illegal copy will like it enough to visit your website to see what else you have.

What I am going to be doing, putting my site link in there and also affiliate links. So even if people do steal it, hopefully some money would be made. I don't even know if I am going to make one sale, let alone having the problem of people redistributing it.
