Default Michael Jackson Memorabilia

As the price of items shoot up when someone dies, I've just done a bit of research on ebay.co.uk

Prior to the announcement of his death at around 11pm last night (Uk time), buy it now auctions on ebay weren't really selling. On a page of 25 items, only around 3 were selling.

After 11pm, everything on every page was selling. There will be people out there making a killing. The domains jacksondeath.com and jackodeath.com were registered last night too.

Oh, and two tickets for his last gig at the O2 arena were at around £75 when he died. They are now at over £700....!

I'm not surprised at the rush to capitalize on Michael Jackson stuff.

It happens all the time.

I'm going to take a look at the Google results.

Someone's going to make some good short term gains.

My first news "hit" of the day is normally at noon. Unless there's tennis on, in which case I apparently get all my current affairs updates from the WF.

The off-topic forum has a thread about Michael Jackson:

I've just been looking at more things on ebay.

Signed photos were selling for £30 up until his death. Now they're £600+

I don't know if you observe this but if you type "MJ" or "Micheal Jackson" on Google, there isn't a single Google Ad.

Maybe Google has a heart and slapped themselves for all
MJ related ads?

... naw, not likely.

But then again, I don't know what else would explain it.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon too: Michael Jackson Memorabilia Buyers Guide.

The main thing is making long term investments in celebrity memorabilia vs. making short term profits on transient consumer products. As a long term vintage and antique collector and reseller I want to find stuff that will still sell well 20-30 years from now. As an Internet marketer, I'm looking to make a quick profit, to strike while the iron's hot.

The main problem for quick profiteers, including domainers, is the trademark and celebrity image issue.

I draw the line between celebrities, who have made a deliberate choice to put themselves in the public eye, versus ordinary people who haven't made that choice. I personally choose to be a fairly private person but if I was a celebrity I'd choose to have my mug plastered on People, US, etc. just like Michael Jackson, Jon and Kate, Brad and Angela, etc. etc. and, as such, I'd have to take the bad with the good when it came to publicity.

Yep, I agree.

Yes, Ebay is going completely nuts with bids, but I got in before it all started going up and purchased a few nice things, Thriller was the first video I had ever seen when I was in college, his situation certainly changed over the years, but he still accomplished quite a lot.

Are you able (is it legal) to register a domain name with "michael jackson" exactly in the domain name? like michaeljackson.com or michaeljacksonisawesome.com, if your intent for the website is to make money from Affiliate/eBay products?

Well I am sure of one thing, as soon as I post this someone will come along and say just the opposite of what I am about to say, just wait and see,

But while we are waiting, I think it is legal up to a point and depending on what your intent is to do with the website.

Tribute websites, fan websites, are generally not illegal if that were true then there would be tons of problems on the internet.

But there may be some that would be considered a problem.

I know that there are tons of these websites out there, just try and get a michael jackson domain name, there are none, unless you want to pay big dollars for them.

but I now await someone to come and disagree with me...

I'll bite.

Prince was going around a year or two ago suing the crap out of tribute and fan sites. Will MJ's estate do the same? Maybe. After all, there are going to be a lot of legal bills to pay by the time all the dust settles.

I was beginning to wonder,

I know it would not be worth going to court unless you just wanted the pub but you never know for sure, I think perhaps that they will not go after anyone unless it is something that is negative, and there are some negative websites out there, I guess it depends on who gets put in charge of the estate.

The thing is, all media platforms have been doing so for decades.

Just turn your TV on and count how many tribute shows are airing (in any country).

And they are funded by ads in most cases.

Go into your record store tomorrow and see how many of his albums are front of store.

It's not always a bad thing. Ultimately, it's a case of providing people with what they want...

...a chance to show their support, and a way to remember their icons.

The only thing I find disgusting is when people start getting on their soap box with loosely based opinions on accusations made against him...

...as if it's perfect timing to make claims of what he did or didn't do in regards to his personal life/court cases. Yeah, ok.

No matter what you think, love or hate...what an amazing icon. Many people are saying that his death is more significant than Elvis'. But that would be provoking a lot of Elvis fans, so take it as you please!

I don't know how i feel about people making money off of someones death. The business man inside says its a smart time to sell anything with his name associated. The other side says that its wrong to take advantage... hmmm

Yes, it is sort of a odd thing, on one hand you want to show respect on the other, hand if you refer an ebay buyer that makes a bid on a $30,000.00 platinum album.

I mean what would that be as a commission?

And if you dont do it, who else will?

It's truly sad to tax another person's sorrows.

Some people "retail therapy" or buying stuff is sort
of a feel better move. This is definitely a sad use
of the situation.

Well by your analysis then Ebay and Amazon should shut down and stop selling the music they are currently selling, who do you think gets the money for that?

The family, so really what you are saying is that you feel that people should not sell the things that they want to sell and people should not be able to buy the things they want to buy.

Pardon me but that makes no sense at all.

Today I purchased an album and I made some other purchases, because I wanted something to remember him by and that is what many are also doing,

If that offends you please accept my apology but I happen to have an old record player and I want to hear him again on vinyl does that make me a bad person?

I think not,

also look out for lots of searches on "michael jacksons children"- as photos of them are far & few between & now all the curiousity seekers will want to know what they look like, if they are really his biological kids, and what's going to happen to them.

Gosh, no.

I'm no complainer about memorabilia....

Perhaps being more specific is key.

Posting stuff on Ebay BECAUSE he's dead...
Buying domains like MJdead.com or something...
Or posting a blog post ONLY for CPA revenue...

Ya.. those are kinda not so cool.

Buying the music & memorabilia that was out there
for the intention of tributing him is totally different.

Many things can be taken two ways.

With a baseball bat, a person can hit someone or
play a game.. A cell phone can call 911 or a hit man.

Anything can be taken 2 ways.

Dan.
