Forum with Blog? Need some guidance on my next steps

I launched a niche forum a few years ago, and I've just begun to take a serious approach over the past year with its re-design etc. I have seen a difference in member participation etc, but a lot of work still needs to be done.

Alongside this forum, under the same domain name, there was going to be a WordPress blog site which would have a combination of unique and non-unique content about the latest research etc which would then have links to discussion of those articles in the forum. the main reason why I created this WP component was because I felt it was necessary to have other rich content on the same site, and perhaps it would give a boost in my traffic.

At this stage, I am beginning to think I have made a mistake.

The problem is that I don't have the time to write any unique content, or any real quality stuff. I might be able to para-phrase or summarise articles into a blog post once a week, but time, for me, is of the essence. Someone a long time ago, who runs a successful forum said, you don't want to be bogged down writing blog posts - let your forum members create the unique content.

So at this stage I don't know what to do. Here are a few things I have through about:
  • Should I create a blog component and proceed as normal with the blog and do my best to get unique content?
  • Create just the forum and market it as much as I can/
  • Create a blog separately from the forum (so if it doesn't go as planned, it won't reflected the quality of the forum to potential members)?

The forum was always supposed to be the focal point of the website. But I really don't know if including this blogging component is a good idea at this stage in its infancy.

I would run the forum & blog seperate. You can outsource the content creation for the blog which will give you time to focus on the forum. You could use the blog to drive people to your forum while also using it for other benefits such as sales etc.

If you don't have time to add valuable content, then adding a blog is probably not a good idea.

However, it shouldn't take that long to add 2-3 articles every week, so if you don't put in the time and effort now you might regret it later.

Keep in mind that a forum also takes a lot of time to maintain.

And Yes if you don't have time to write quality contact for your blog, then its a good idea to hire some one to write some quality.

You could split both blog and forum up, but still link the blog back to the forum. If you can't get content up yourself, outsource the work out for 2-3 new articles a week.

Just look at what's hot in the forum itself and then have a related article written about it. You can then link back to the post from the forum to let it gain more exposure to your members as well.

I like the idea of a blog alongside your forum. People can go to the blog looking for fresh stuff and spend time on the forum discussing things. If yiu don't have time for both I think you should spend time developing the forum and outsource the blogging part.

One thought to keep in mind is to use your forum as a blog too, instead of having separate delineations. As the admin of your forum, you can create long forum posts and mark them as sticky. I prefer this because the fact that its a forum means people comment on your "article" (ie post) more than they'd typically leave comments on a wordpress blog. And in my experience, this seems to work wonderfully for SEO, probably because the content is "changing" as more people post.

    Thank you for the comments.

I have considered running the blog and forum separate, but it seems that I will creating more work for myself as I will now need to build up two sites through a beginner stage, which I am already battling with the forum.

I have considered using the forum, for the time being, to act a blogging platform. I think this will help focus on member engagement, thread post creation and eventually, I will be able to run the blog separately once I realise I have got I strong member-base.

Also, do you think it would be determintal if I was to market the forum as it is now, and then change the name of it later to a new domain name? Or should I change the domain name first and then market it? I'm trying to create more a brand-name website.
