How to FAIL at IM every single time!

17 replies
Hi Warriors,

For those who are pretty experienced and are experiencing success in IM, what are some of the things that most newbies (and even those who have been around for a while) do that causes them to fail?

For me ...

1) They focus 80% (or even 100%) of their time learning and 20% (or less) of their time executing what they know they need to do

2) They start multiple projects but NEVER focus on any single one

3) Lack of consistency (I.e. Doing little skirmishes that never really result in any lasting success)

Your thoughts?

    I would to like to add:

    * They usually don't have a plan.
    * They get distracted easily
    * They don't have anyone to turn to when they get stuck
    * Shiny Object Syndrome

    • Starting off in IM/MMO-related niches (probably the single commonest cause of failure)
    • Trying to sell rather than to pre-sell (affiliates)
    • "Taking action" before they really know in which direction to set off
    • Depending on Google for their primary traffic
    • Imagining that a division into "SEO traffic" and "paid traffic" is a meanginful way of categorizing "traffic options"
    • Not building an email list
    • Imagining that "the biggest list" might be the same thing as "the list that produces the most income"
    • Taking quantitative instead of qualitative approaches
    • Not concentrating on developing the judgement needed to distinguish between fact and opinion
    • Confusing "duplicate content" with "syndicated content"
    • And a lot of the mistakes I made, myself, when I started

      2 things..

      1) define "IM". That is the first and foremost suicide in my book. Internet marketing? Isn't that everything we do these days? if you post a selfie of yourself on your FB that is also marketing, of you.. the virtual equivalent of a choice of shirt for the day in the office, everything we do is marketing, online marketing IM - that's a larger concept than the universe. Anyway......... - those that get in with an idea to make money and haven't decided on a really really really reaaally narrow segment are in for a very very Very tough time and will most likely fail.

      2) they try to send me emails like "Hey Mike, here's a special bonus for you."

    Lack of consistency
    Boom that is the #1 problem, it used to be a huge problem for me but I am becoming more consistent in my marketing efforts of my blog

    Going with the wrong mindset into IM. Many training programs promise riches within 2-4 weeks sometimes even days. Those who have been in IM for some time know that's not true, you need to work hard and stay consistent in your efforts on daily basis.

    Well, those who don't know that (newbies), believe that, buy a training program, take action but never make money because most of those training suck and get discouraged really fast.

    I think Internet Marketing is like any other business or a job - one needs to work hard to see any results, there is such thing as quick, automated money machines

    There is one newbie mistake that everyone seems to have missed...

    - They try to do everything for free.

    There are a lot of newbies that build sites for free on Weebly or Blogger and use their free subdomains, then build some crappy free forum and blog comment backlinks and expect the commissions to start rolling in.

    I think distractions are a big roadblock when doing IM.

    There's so many things to get distracted about online that you end up doing nothing for hours.

    It all sounds easy but it's not, you need to be really persistent to succeed.

    Lack of focus and action.

    Too many people want to be a consumer and not a marketer.

    100% of the time, always lack of action. Took me a long time to learn that it is just better to DO then to sit around planning on doing.

    Internet!

    Because IM definitely need Internet to do task and project. But at the same time too many distraction like Facebook, games and etc.

    Which means no discipline and focus on their task.

    There are countless reasons why new IMers usually walk away from the business, but in my experience it's generally from three things:

    Lack of action
    Fear of failure
    Information Overload

    Granted you can go into both of them more and break then down further, but in my experience these three things are a recipe for disaster in any business.

    Your thoughts?

    • Getting caught in shiny object syndrome and buying up everything.
    • Not learning the IM transparency. Exa: Optin to someone watch their funnel. They are selling you their technique that works for them. The product is on front of you face!
    • Take Action just get out there and make things happen.
    • Spend money on automation and making tedious jobs easier by software and outsourcing.

    Just a few and never reveal anything in Masterminds or to others with out a NDA!!

    I'm guilty of pretty much all of the above.

    Another one is failing to capitalize on small successes. Many beginners earn a few bucks, get impatient and move on... failing to appreciate that earning even $20 is a big breakthrough which can be the foundation for building a profitable biz with sufficient focus.
