Hi All,

Trying to research the downside of changing a domain name. I am looking at a small website acquisition with some good traffic but was wondering if it would be a challenge to do a name change without losing traffic. I have researched and understand the 301 redirect thing but will that cause a setback in all the positive google work that has been put into showing up well in search results.

Thanks.

Good point. The current name just isn't very brand friendly even though it's working but I guess if it's working why kick a gift horse in the mouth.

Why do you have to have just one site? If there are downsides to consolidating, keep both domains. Since they won't be the same in content, why don't you just keep both but focus each one on different aspects of your niche.

Eventually, you might end up selling one off . . . or concentrating on the one that makes the most money and using the other as a "feeder" site to your money site.

Thx all. Guess it does make sense and maybe redirect a couple other landing pages with names i think might be more appropriate.

    Thanks.
Do you know how their traffic was acquired? for all we know, it could have been paid advertising to inflate the numbers so they could use that information when selling their site/domain.

also, here is some general info from google on changing domain names and things to be aware of.
