Default How to break into a niche?

I'm trying to set up a new campaign and it's going okay, except I find that every niche keyword has a huge amount of competitors.

Like, a full bar of advertiser competition. I've heard that this is bad and that I should avoid keywords like that.

I'm trying to get around them, but the advertiser competition is proportional to monthly search volume, so I'm completely stuck.

I see a lot of warriors here don't have any trouble finding new niches, so I'll ask the only people who know how.

How do I break into a niche that already has a lot of established competition in the first place? Is it possible or even worth it to try a niche keyword that has high advertiser competition?

Have you tried using Yahoo/MSN or Google Content Network.

Get your ad on all the pages that display adsense for your keywords. Trust me.

You mean setting up an adwords campaign?

I've been thinking about something like that.

I tend to cluster together groups of long keywords as I am not prepared to start a campaign with the expensive terms. You will not get so many visitors but they will be focused.

for example

"Golf clubs" would be very hard to get noticed

"buy left handed golf clubs" would have fewer searches but they are keen to purchase. I would find ten similar keywords around this theme and that would be one ad group

(I haven't checked these numbers - it is an illustration)

The Memoirs Of Edward Rochester - Just imagine if Jane Eyre had been written by Mr Rochester.
My first full length novel now on Kindle and In Print on Createspace. That's what I call a niche!

No, no.

A campaign -- meaning a leap into a niche using articles or google pagerank using backlinks for a new affiliate (clickbank, adsense, etc) product I've decided to advertise.

I suppose a better word for it would be a project.

Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Well, advertisers are a good sign then. It means people are spending money to reach that market.

So would it be better just to disregard the advertiser competition and move on to advertiser pagerank and backlinks?

If so, what do you consider worth putting the effort into when starting a new project like this one?

EDIT: As in, what if backlinkwatch.com shows the top competitor has 4270 backlinks?

Or what if your search for that keyword shows 17 million results? That sort of thing.

The reason these niches are so competitive is because people are making money in them. Very rarely will you come accross something with no competition at all.

Just make sure you do a better job than your competition, or at least as good as.

Don't be afraid of competition.

I actually often WON'T go into a niche if there isn't any competition.

Competition is good.

If there is no competition stay well away.

I don't view others as competition in a niche. I consider them to be JV partners that haven't signed on yet.

It depends upon the niche, but some competition is easier to get past than others. If you were targeting something like credit cards, finance, weight loss etc, where there is a lot of money to be made, your competition is going to be tough because they want to keep earning the money they are already. They won't tolerate a young upstart coming along and stealing their traffic, so you will have a real fight on your hands.

However, there are easier niches to target that still have many millions of results in Google, but those results are not so competitive and you will have a much better chance of getting by them.

Its horses for courses in this game. Generally, the easier the niche, the less you can expect to make from it, although there are exceptions and finding them is not impossible.

No IM'er worth their salt will tell you what those niches are, of course. They might sell you an ebook that claims to reveal well paying niches, but if they were really so good, they'd make more from working the niche than selling an ebook.

Finding a great niche is something you'll have to do for yourself, because when you think about it, if you found the goose that laid the golden egg, would you give it away?

On the other hand finding a niche with little competition might mean the niche is worthless. Don't let the amount of competition scare you away from making money. If you do it right(most of your competitors won't) and give it time, success is within reach.
