I was just thinking that if we can just record our normal speaking to the microphone and be converted instantly to correct english text - it would such an amazing improvement !

people who are doing this are using the extremely expensive Dragon Naturally Speaking software (7 GBytes or so

I was wondering if there are other cheaper or even free solutions to
transform speech directly to text?

Thanks in advance

    what application from Windows Vista???

Yep, Vista has it. Click on the Windows logo at the bottom left hand corner of your screen to bring up your start menu. You cursor should automatically be in the 'search' bar. Type in "Speech Recognition" and your system will find it.
Run through the set up, configure the mic, and you're good to go.

BUT... it's not as easy as it seems. You have to actually command punctuation in your speech. Like this: "The black cat ran home period"

Good luck with it and let us know how you like it.

      Warmest Regards,

You can check in the Control Panel to see if it has Speech Recognition. It actually works great and integrates with Office 2007 like a monster.

IIRC Vista Basic doesn't have it.

What I want is a reasonably priced app that will import a recorded WAV or MP3 of dictation and render it to text.

      Michael,

Dragon 10 and now 11 can do that. I use it all the time. However, since it must first be trained to your own voice it doesn't always recognize others' voices.

I carry a small recorder in the car and speak my ideas into to, then stick the MP3 file into the computer and use the "Transcribe" command in Dragon. Works great on my voice because it has been trained to my voice.

Awesome. I may have to spring for the newer version. When I went to Vista, my older version of DNS wasn't compatible with the 64-bit OS, but because I had the Speech Rec within Windows I could get by without it... still looking for the killer app to be able to do recognition against files.

Time to break out the credit card again.

        Thanks!!!

The OP seems to be saying that speaking incorrect English into such a program results in a correct text doc - does any speech recognition program do this reliably?

DNS must be "trained" a bit to get good results, doesn't it? How do you train a program to correct your errors in a language? Can this really be done?

I know that the Windows Vista Speech rec gets better over time as you correct the mistakes. I don't know how this would work with someone who isn't a native English speaker, but I bet this guy does.

I could never get Dragon Naturally Speaking to perform at a high enough level. I think a top of the line microphone is neccesary.

Thanks a million for the info on Vista Speech Recognition. I had no idea and have had this computer for over a year. I've been seriously thinking lately about getting dragon as I'm very slow being a two finger typist. I'll check this out first though. Thanks again and take care. Patrick

123rlp- Oops. Sorry, didn't mean to dis you. Thanks due to you also for suggesting this first.

i've tried this a few times and i haven't been totally happy with it. if you're only a 2 finger typist you'll probably like it. but if you can type 40 or more words a minute you'll probably want dns.

I have XP and Not Vista.

So the whole speech recognition niche has JUST ONE software? Dragon N.S.?

There are very few players because the actual speech technology engines are super complex and have millions of dollars of research behind them.

IBM is a big speech technology player, but their stuff is pretty expensive compared to DNS. Before I jumped to Vista 64 bit, I found a NIB retail package copy of DNS on ebay for around $40 + shipping.

I can't remember who it was but someone mentioned that what made the biggest improvement with Vista speech recognition was dictating the reply to an email. The program knew instantly when he started talking about a subject already there.

That sounded like such a good idea. I'll probably be trying it out soon,

    Edit: Neil Morgan probably.
