Basics Of Article Writing Please

Hi,

I am building a website selling expert advice in the form of ebooks and videos in my particular niche that I have worked in for years.

However I havent started marketing yet. I will work on my paid marketing strategy but I definitely would like to try and build a bit of a reputation in my niche and give glimpses of what I can teach and more about me, plus some free traffic interested in what I have to say is always good..

The best way I can think to do this is posting articles. But not sure how to do this?

I am building a catalogue of articles, only just started writing but hope to get up to 30 or so unique articles in a few weeks (i know this niche inside out). But what do I do with each article?
Do I just post it on my site and hope google finds it? Or do I submit it to directories? Can i post the same article in multiple places? Any websites or pieces of software to send out the articles to different places? Im pretty clueless where to start?

Thanks everyone

    Hi Tommy,

Your title's asking a slightly different question from your post. I'll try to answer both.

There are some suggestions about article-writing in this post (the things that increase the likelihood of getting articles widely published are the same things that make them successful, too): http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post3188316

    No.

The only traffic that can ever bring you is a little bit of gradual, eventual, search engine traffic, which isn't going to be much use to you anyway.

Publishing articles just on your own site isn't really a traffic-generating plan at all.

    No.

The last thing you want is potential customer traffic coming to your site from an article directory (we all lose most of that traffic, and would have been better off with it coming directly to our site instead. It's easy to imagine that you're getting traffic from an article directory, whereas in reality what's happening is that traffic is going to an article directory and we end up only with the minority of it that gets from there to our site. This post explains: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5075780 ).

(There's an argument for submitting an additional copy of each article, after everything else you do with it, to "Ezine Articles". Discussed below. It's only an afterthought, though.)

    Yes.

Always on your own site first!

Originally Posted by Tommyg123 View Post

    No.

Don't even think about trying that. Those wouldn't be places that have the already-targeted traffic you want. Never use "automated submission".

    Here you go ...

For publishing articles, the first and foremost place, of course, should always be your own site (and nowhere else until they've been published and indexed there).

After that, anywhere that's specifically relevant to the subject of your niche, so that you can attract targeted traffic from the readers/visitors of those sites.

Suggestions on "how to find those sites" are here.

And some suggestions on "how to ask them to publish your article/post" are here.

(It's very much less important, of course, but even the backlinks from those context-relevant sites are also worth something to your site, just because of their relevance - Google values that. But of course all you can ever get from Google is "search engine traffic", which tends to be of limited value and is often temporary, too).

Don't forget ezines, as well as websites. Their traffic can often be highly targeted and responsive, and their subscribers pretty attentive.

(No - "ezines" are not the same thing as "article directories"!).

Also, offline sources (magazines, even newspapers) commonly re-publish articles, and these can produce real floods of traffic (acceptance is generally more difficult, and there's more work involved and a bigger learning-curve, but the benefits can really be dramatic!).

After that, it's also worth mentioning Ezine Articles. That isn't an ezine: it's the web's best-known article directory, and can be used as a way of achieving some additional, "passive syndication", i.e. when publishers look there for content to re-publish (that being the purpose of article directories). It's only a minor afterthought, compared with everything mentioned above, but it can sometimes be a good and helpful afterthought. (I submit all my articles there - after they've been extensively published elsewhere, of course - and I do sometimes benefit from it, a little. It's free, anyway. But don't imagine that publishing articles yourself and then putting the additional copy in Ezine Articles is "doing article marketing": it isn't, at all).

In contrast, it's not worth mentioning any other article directories, and for all the reasons explained in this post, no article marketer would want their potential customer traffic coming to their sites via an article directory anyway: that isn't how article directories work, isn't what they're intended for, and isn't a benefit they can provide, either. This thread explains how to use them: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5068872

Very last on the list, and the "lowest of the low" are probably "Web 2.0 sites", which tend to come with all sorts of problems and disadvantages for article marketers, and very few (if any) additional benefits, for all the kinds of reasons explained here.

The rule of thumb (and it's a pretty good and valid one) is that anywhere where you can just "submit your own content" without any sort of editiorial approval/acceptance process probably isn't going to be of any real benefit to you.

Here are a few other threads (some of them quite helpful) which include a big mixture of comments on the subject of "where to submit articles" ...

    Really dumb article SYNDICATION question

Last point coming up(!): if you see people telling you that "article marketing isn't as good as it used to be", those are people who are confusing "article marketing" with "article directory marketing". Some of what they say is true, but it isn't actually about article marketing at all and they've totally missed the point: it's just about "using article directories as a way of getting traffic" (that isn't what article directories are for, anyway, of course!). In other words, I'd give their posts a miss, if I were you - but it's a widespread misunderstanding, so there may be a few posts like that, before this thread's done.

      So, here's the thing.

      Article directories don't work anymore!

So, the question is where you can submit your short articles to gain some traction to your website.

      Guest post on authority blogs.

Guest post on authority e Zines.

      Submit to your PDF directories.

      Submit to video sites.

      And then, just get social!

  • because you would like to build a reputation you can also use the social media traffic. This will be by you joining facebook and Linkedin groups that are in your niche and posting these article there.

Those that will be attractive to you article will follow you to your site. With this method you will not have to worry about seo.

Thanks very much for the input guys.

So if I build up a collection of unique articles, 30 or so. Should I upload them to my site at once? I heard google likes a steady stream of uploads. But likewise no point someone coming to my site, seeing there is only one or two articles, it will look pretty amateurish.

Once they are all on my site, shall I then start putting them in high profile places on the net linking back to my homepage?

    Thanks

There's something in this, Tommy, but it's normally a very minor consideration.

The point, here, is that Google goes through a "learning process" and re-indexes new content on sites in accordance with how regularly they're updated. But the difference is really small.

As an indication, I update all my websites with new content twice a month (occasionally three times per month), and Google indexes the new content within hours (not days). It's maybe true that if you publish 30 articles all at once and then nothing for weeks or months, next time you update it will take Google a day or two longer to update your future new content. That's about all the significance it has, though.

Yes, after Google has indexed them. (Not just "after you've published them"!). But make sure they're places that have the already-targeted traffic you want to attract. It's all about relevance/targeting.

As explained above, that has nothing to do with most people's understanding of "high profile". It doesn't mean article directories or Web 2.0 sites, and it doesn't mean places you can just "submit them to" on your own, to get them published: those are very unlikely to help you much, if at all.

This is how to find the right places.

This is how to ask people to re-publish the articles with a link to your home-page/landing-page.

Yes you can also post them into High PR Article Directories like
Sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense at all. The page ranks of the article directories have nothing to do with it: the articles will go on their own newly-formed PR-0 pages anyway.

Pages have page ranks, not websites.

So much for article marketing, then?!

The entire business model of article marketing rests on getting the same articles published as widely as possible on relevant sites.

Why do people post this nonsense?

Ah, now I understand it all - you're just a forum-spammer. That explains why your "information" is all so mistaken and misguided.

Thanks for the great recap of how to use articles for best results in mid-2014!

I'm just about to redouble my own efforts, and this is really helpful.

One thing about ezinearticles... It's a great place to build a portfolio and to build up credibility... So when I communicate with potential new clients, I do tend to send them to my account - and they are usually impressed. But i really need to publish some new articles over there (right after I published them on my website).

I'm wondering if I should change them up a bit though?

I usually do that, but that also makes it more work, which interferes with getting them out there fast.

"Your title's asking a slightly different question from your post."

Sorry Alexa, I just have to pick you up on a minor technicality in what is, as ever, sound advice...

Your sentence should read "Your title is asking..."

That you write "title's" suggests that "asking a slightly different question from your post" is something the belongs the the title

          I wouldn't, honestly. I never do.

(You wouldn't want Google making any mistakes over whether they're "unique" and accidently letting them rank, there? Would be a shame to give an article directory "unique content" and letting it rank, after Google's helped us out so much with all those Panda updates reducing the chances of that, and making it so much easier for us to use EZA without that risk, these days?)

Alexa has explained pretty much everything very nicely. Maybe something else I would add is social networking with influencers in your niche. This can open great opportunities for getting your articles published on their blogs and websites.
Just find out where they like hanging out and interact with them, share their content with your connections and add something valuable to their discussions. They'll take notice and as a result they'll be more willing when you pitch to them looking for backlinks or to have your articles published on their sites.
I like this strategy because it benefits you in different ways: it can earn you quality relevant backlinks, increases your exposure, and you get quality traffic.
