I'd think due to ergonomics, comfort and a number of other reasons that desk tops would be more popular and better for IM than laptops. Unless your are at the stage where you work an hour a day from some tropical beach |

I am using a 10 year old IBM T43, one of the most reliable laptops you will find. Bought it used in Bangkok 2 years ago and since then it has been trough water, sand and dropped countless of times, still working great.

I had to make the big Mac switch with my desktop...Vista was killing me and my productivity - not saying it is horrible for all but it was a nightmare for me in the end. I'll be getting a laptop soon and will stick with Mac. |

I will be getting a laptop soon and am just looking at lenovo.com. They have a recommendation in almost every thread of this type and it is usually just a quiet one, like the one earlier in this thread, not an evangelist type. Mostly they are geared to big business and government and they don't even advertise to the individual consumer, but if you go to that section of their site they have about 10 times the choice of the Toshiba site. (Not trying to knock them, just the only other site I visited looking and that was my impression. They would probably be my second choice.) They have a huge variety in prices. The cheaper models can't be customized, they are just a complete package offer, but most of them can be customized. You can pick any size HD, memory, flash hd sometimes, xp if you want it, and a lot of options. They also have the world's only dual monitor notebook. The second screen slides out from behind the first when you need it. It starts at just over $4k. You don't need to get a web cam if you don't want to, one of a few things that annoy me about macs. They also have patented trackpoint. I regimped my profile pic to include the red dot in the keyboard. The second time I pushed it, I liked it better than the touch pad. Push it harder it moves the cursor farther and faster, and I understand if you push down on it, it clicks, but haven't had the chance to try that yet. |

One of the main reasons why users of Lenovo/IBM are so avid about this brand is its trackpoint pointing device. I found it even easier to use and more accurate than a mouse, not to mention the ubiquitous touchpads that I cannot stand. On the whole laptops are still not as reliable as desktops and I have gone thorugh many other brands. But no brand can beat lenovo/IBM in terms of servicing. I can just bring in for servicing in the morning and it will usually be available by the afternoon. I am an extremely heavy and rough user and it should be be a surprise that I would require more servicing than most people. |

I know someone who pushed it a couple of times and preferred the touchpad, but he had been using touchpads for years first. | |

I use a HP dv8000 Laptop. It's old by computer's standard. Paid $1,700 back in 2006. Has 17" full size keyboard w/numberpad. 1 GB RAM and two 100 GB hard drives. it weighs a ton but it does the job. I'll get a new one once my Clickbank checks average hits $1,000. Keeps me motivated... |

I've just started using an Asus N50VC with 4 gig of ram and dedicated graphics card. Big screen, big keyboard with number pad. Very nice indeed, and so much faster than my ancient Sony.

I uses an Asus netbook - model 1000HE. The main thing that had me going for it is the long battery life. Disabling the camera and bluetooth, I'm able to get as much as 8 hours (spec quoted 9.5 hour but it's a stretch) working time on it. I did double up the ram to 2 GB though. For my usage (browsing the net, wordprocessing, normal server-related activity such as ftp'ing etc), it's more than sufficient. Prior to this, I'm using a 14" Asus laptop. I did have to adjust to the small screen though. Here's the review for the model I'm using: Asus Eee PC 1000HE (black) Laptop reviews - CNET Reviews |

I use a desktop for most of my work. I have an HP Pavilion as a backup. I also have a Sharp Actius RD10 that weighs a ton. That doesn't matter, as the battery is dead, and I use it in the dining room for guests. Still a pretty powerful machine, for the age of the thing. (2.4 ghz processor.) I'm going to pick up an Asus EEE system with the 10" screen for "coffee shop" use for a local WiFi project, and for chat and social networking stuff. There won't be any other business data on that machine. Paul |

I use a Macbook Pro 15" but when traveling I get on the Mac Air. Both of them are not that expensive with the new models that just came out. One amazing thing that I like to point out is the ability to sync everything from one computer to the other and even to your iphone (if you have one). Mac is great and you can have your regular vista or xp installed in it. Keep in mind that they are just awesome when talking about graphics (for web design etc) Macs are nice, but I still have my PC...but I use it for gaming when I want to have some distractions because macs suck at this Peter |
