Instead of putting your (rather unfriendly) affiliate link into a page, you can create another page on your site that automatically redirects to your affiliate link. Then when you want to send people through your affiliate link, you can provide them with the (much friendlier) address of your redirect page on your website. This means that you can put this address inside emails/newsletters and it will look much more attractive to your readers.

    I do it because:

    1) It looks better.

    2) More agile. (Easier for me to remember).

    3) Allows me to change the link behind the redirect if for whatever reason that affiliate revokes access.

    4) Let's me play around with potential georedirects.

    And...

There's one more reason that's ultimately most dear to me.

    And that's...

    5) So I can enable tracking and collect some hardcore data on my end user demographics and their buying behavior.

    Hope this helps.

Also, if you put it in an ebook or otherwise distribute it widely, you can change the actual affiliate link behiind the redirect if/when the affiliate program changes.

I've had this sort of thing happen many times...

Sometimes, the vendor simply leaves Clickbank and their sales page now leads to a PayPal link! No commissions for me!

And sometimes, the product disappears altogether.

So having a redirect will give you greater control of your links...

And then, of course, there's the issue that some people buy the product through their own affiliate link (mostly on Clickbank) when they know it's a CB product... So masking the link will help you protect your commissions.

Other people simply don't like the idea of someone else earning money from their purchases, and so they'll use the plain link.

Again, having a good redirect will help you protect your income.

      Sarevok,

May I know how do you collect the prospect demographics? I am interested to know more about the gender and age group of the people who clicked on my affiliate link. Thx.

Here are some of my reasons:

    1) They look better, and more professional, rather than showing another merchant's url with a long affiliate id code which looks spammy

    2) Increase click through http://yourdomain.com/goto/whateveryoupromote looks alot better than http://marchanturl.com/affiliateid_xyzw_1243537_pnkjshf kf.php

    3) Better email delivery rates, since it looks less spammy your email gets a better change to be in the inbox rather than end up in the junk folder

    4) Better tracking and also link management, for example if I am using a php redirect and if I decide to change my offer to a similar but different merchant or if there are changes to affiliate link I could easily change one file and all my affiliate links will be amended at one go

    5) Making sure that there will be reduced lost of affiliate income because someone just copies your link and replace it with their own affiliate id

However, please note that there are affiliate programs that do not like cloaking or redirects please do read the terms and conditions of your affiliate network carefully

    Best regards
    Danny
