I have a .co domain and now I'm worried newbies and non tech savvy people may see it and type in .com thinking the .co is a typo. (

If I were you, I would go for .org, but you can also take both and redirect the .co to .org or the other way around.

It's funny that you mention that because I used to think the same thing I knew that extension existed, but now I know better. If possible, you might want to buy the actual .com for the site and set up a redirect, so that you're covered either way. I've seen done, too.

Sorry I don't follow you. Do you mean you used to make that mistake and type in .com when you say .co?

I agree with Miguelito203, although it would work only if the .com owner is willing to sell and the OP is willing to buy at the owner price.

In my opinion, I would go after the .com only if it has proven to make consistent money. Then you know your investment would be taken care of.

It also depends on the price of the .com

But if the .com is not within your reach atm, go ahead and get the .org. It cant hurt.

I would like to add that if you the that .com will make you lose traffic/visitors, then you can also consider looking for another .com domain name.

How about you buy the .co and the .org domain names, together with the .com?
Whenever someone types in the .co or the .org domain, they will be shifted to the .com page. I forgot the term. Just to make sure, your competitor doesn't get your customers.

Yup ... this is one of the problems of ".co" domains.

The general guiding principle ought to be: "Don't build a business on any domain-name of which the .com-variant already belongs to someone else." That would be all downside: not looking as good; losing traffic; having little resale value; etc. etc. All disadvantages. But if you get that general principle right, it doesn't matter too much what you do for domain-names. I actually use some ".info" domains, which my subscribers and visitors like to see (it speaks to them of "information") but I always own the .com as well, and redirect it.

I think using .co variant "because you can't get the .com", i.e. someone else already owns it, is generally a mistake to avoid.

I also prefer to use a .com domain, because that's what people are used to typing in and therefore more profitable in my opnion. In your case I would either redirect to .co to a newly bought .com domain OR copy the website's content (if you have any) and buy a new .com domain and place your contents on that website.
Btw...You can redirect one url to another in your cpanel. It's easy to find.
    Good luck!

If you are using anchor text to link back to your site, then anyone clicking on your link won't see the site link. So it won't really be an issue that you need to be worried about. Although some people might be more accustomed to clicking on a .com rather than .co link (assuming they find the link somewhere online) and could try to auto correct it. And, maybe this is a risk you will have to take.
