LOL Generic Legal Forms

I'm in my office, getting paid to review a contract that someone wants to get out of, and I'm thinking - this is one of the worst contracts I've ever seen. Several terms are not remotely close to being legal.

The legal forms sites are not exactly harming the legal profession.

When you need to protect your assets and business are you looking for the cheapest possible forms?

Do you do that when looking for a surgeon? Hey, for my heart transplant I don't care who does it, or if they have a MD, as long as they can do it for a few bucks. Preferably free.

"Expert" stuff doesn't have to cost a lot. I know there are budgets and sometimes the budget is really low. There's plenty of great services on the forum that are inexpensive. I just used someone on Fiverr where for $5 they did a task it would have taken me an hour to learn how to do (and it probably would have looked like crap).

Treat your business like a real business and even a small outlay could pay you dividends down the road.

But you sell generic legal forms in your signature...? lol

This person you are dealing with may have found the forms online (from a seller like you... or a trusted website) and assumed they were dealing with someone they could trust.

Best advice when it comes to legals. Always hire a professional and never rely on templates or anything you find online. It's simply not worth it. That's why we have lawyers.

That, and so we can write joke books...

What does a lawyer get when you give him Viagra?

    Taller. lol

Actually, Will, if you weren't continually talking out of your butt and being the well deserved subject of multiple flame wars this week, you'd know my forms are attorney prepared and I offer free customization for my customers. Every customer can get exactly the form they want for their needs.

"Attorney prepared" means nothing. There are good and bad attorneys just as there are in every profession.

A lot of other sellers probably offer that also. But again we are just trusting someone's word online. That's why it's always best to go and visit a local legal professional for all legal matters... as you correctly said.

            Garrie,

And one with actual experience with the law as it relates to online business activities. That is a less common thing than one would think, even at this late stage.

Brian's experience was the reason I purchased his forms.

I think Will knows kindsvater is an attorney. It's pretty obvious.

I think his point is, agree or not (not offering any opinion here), is that for important legal matters, he thinks you should visit someone local and in person, not do business with a lawyer over the internet.

I think that's pretty much about sums up his point.

I wasn't talking about Brian in particular. He just happened to be the one who started this thread.

I don't know Brian or his qualifications.

Merely stating that for us to trust him we also have to trust what he is telling us. On the Internet, perception is reality and we all know people have been burnt countless times.

Plenty of licensed doctors out there who are ripping people off. It happens in every industry, there is good and bad.

It's harder to trust someone online because you are having to believe their word.

That's why I think it's always a good idea to go local for important things such as legal advice. Someone you can sit down with in person.

It's actually incredibly easy to vet a U.S. lawyer online. What you should be looking for
is specialization, expertise, experience and professional reputation, not location.

    Will,

Because, of course, everyone knows enough about the law to properly judge a lawyer's credentials face-to-face...

I don't know Brian, but I know Kim Standerline and she trusts Brian completely. That's good enough for me.

Finding a local lawyer who has a clue about most anything "online business" related is tough, to say the least.

Ha ha ... the local lawyers here in bumfu*c! VA don't even know the Internet exists much less being versed in Internet law issues.

.. and not all legal issues originate from your own state. I have one that originates in CA regarding an estate issue and guess who is my first choice to call when I get around to it? Hmmm ... someone I already feel that I know from CA., or someone that I don't have a clue about from an online lawyer directory?
