Newbie - How do I start earning money?

Hi Everyone -

I am new to this forum (first post) and I have been intrigued by all the posts on this site. I have always wanted to start something online, however, I never knew where to start. I am a programmer and can sell my programs, however, it appears many people make money without selling anything. Since my wife's layoff - I would like to earn extra cash online.

I do not understand Internet Marketing and how people start and make money.

What can I do to start learning this business and what do I really need to do to get extra cash flow coming in?
