How NOT to do email marketing

I don't know about you, but this is the funniest and saddest email I've ever gotten.

So the message that I wanted to get across in this thread to all you email marketers out there is: If you want to keep your subscribers, DON'T DO THIS!

That Rich Jerk attitude is so hold. At first it was fun, then boring. I actually unsubscribed from his list because I was tired of being called a "loser" every time I opened his emails.

When someone calls you a loser, run away from their emails. I know that he is trying to sell you his product but calling someone a "loser" for the sake of selling something is dead wrong.

This is a very sad email. This is not the way to do email marketing.

Good publicity repeats the effect, bad publicity bangs and goes away taking some buyers with it.

No one is asking who he guy is, where can we subscribe, isn't it?

WOW that sucks. Its pure nonsense what some people actually consider email marketing. Pretty persuasive stuff huh?

      Mike,

      Good point

However, email marketing isn't just about getting your emails opened...I'm sure you know that. The headline did get me to open it, but what was not done in that email was to make any attempt to build rapport with me nor to sell me anything.

There was no link in that email for me to click through, it did not address me by name, and there was no sign-off.

Anyway, I got a good laugh out of that email and I thought it might be a good idea to share it with everyone here.

      That's all

      Wow.

Wonder what the story is behind this.

There's an easy way to avoid creating a product that you THINK is what they people want and, instead, create a product that you KNOW they want.

Guess this guy is just poopy.

Sounds like he can barely construct a sentence, If I was to receive an email like that, even if the offer was good, I'd probably unsubscribe on the spot.

I wonder if anyone has considered what
might be good about that email message?

Did the title achieve a good open rate?

    It the message authentic?

Is the senders personality stamped on it?

Was there a strong call to action?

Instead of nit picking and criticising the
grammar & spelling, look for the lessons
    that you can use.

This cracked me up but then I had a flashback...

Years ago, I was a young bright-eyed environmentalist doing door-to-door canvassing for a "Greenpeace-like" organization. It was a non-profit, but really it was a sales job.

Every summer, we'd get these whiny college kids who somehow pulled big fundraising $$$ with their "Pity Rap". Ex: "But if you don't give a donation, the [fill in cute endangered species] will DIE! And I need to raise another [X amt of dollars] in the next 20 minutes or I'll GET FIRED!"

Maybe the emailer's style was unconscious & unintentional, or maybe he's an evil reverse-psychology-marketing genius!

Fun start to my Monday, anyways... :p

    Hi All,

    IMO John Taylor is right!

First, everyone must be getting sick to death of the Guru
mail shots, they all sound like they have been written by
    the same person.

Second, greed is a strong emotion, get my free stuff anyway.

Smarter than the average marketer in my book!

    Just my opinion.

Hmm, what is indisputable about the e-mail is that it sticks out - and that's what makes it interesting in terms of marketing. If someone sent you "get my free e-book and get rick withing three milliseconds - proven results" you wouldn't probably even remember seeing it in received mail. I agree the wording of that e-mail is utterly disgusting and all, but there's something marketing about it - it might not work, but at least it is a fresh approach.
