How do I create a product I know nothing about

I'd like to know how I would go about getting information to create a product in a niche that I don't know anything about. Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Educate yourself (massive time investment required).

    2. Find someone who is knowledgeable in that industry and ask him/her to help.

    3. Outsource

Sorry I dont mean to be rude but my answer is .... dont . To me a product I buy is because I want the best information from experts on the topic. Some may disagree and say go for it use outsourced writers etc. But I have a problem personally with the integrity around this and all this does is add value to those professionals who are masters of their niche. Rather become an affiliate for a product you know nothing about at least you can test the quality of the content and have a level of assurance that you are promoting quality. And at 75% commissions seems highly worth while to me.

If your question is creating a product for sale my above answer is my thoughts , if you are asking about creating a product as a way to help promote some other product you may be affiliated to for example a free eBook give away then there are a few ways to create something you are not proficient at.

I guess my best advice is selling quality is always the only long term sustainable solution its highly unlikely a product created by anyone one clueless about a topic will offer enough quality. I may be wrong and others may say they have done amazing things creating products they know little about.

I disagree completely. Many great books and etc have come from people doing research on a topic they know nothing about at all. It just takes tons and tons of research and reading. Surely, you have had do do research on a topic before because you can't know everything there is to know about everything.

I've spent a long time thinking about this problem and have spent endless hours working to improve my writing skills.

My goal was to find a solution to this question because I find it is pretty much at the core of creating a successful infomarketing business.

Luckily, I did find an answer and it's somewhat easy to say.. but I can't say it's easy to do unless you find the mental 'angle' at which your reader wants to see the information.

Just because the information is technically accurate does not mean that someone wants to pay for information which takes a lot of work just to understand it!

The value is in the simplifying and RELATING to their frustration and situation.. and to have the convenience to having someone do most of the thinking for them so they can simply 'follow the breadcrumbs' of ideas to come up with the result.

You can pretty much take any subject and represent it in a much more valuable way for people who are tired of 'gaps' in the info and constantly getting 'stuck' when trying to execute the steps.

You need to recognize those 'stuck' points and break them down FOR them in an understanding way.

Once you get to this point it's kind of easy to write. The hard part is getting this perspective.

I used to write either too technically or too 'mental mind dump' neither which I found people had the attention span to follow.

You need to find a way to do most of the interpreting FOR them so they can just pay to get the results as fast as possible via that mode of learning.

I guess it can take some real empathy and marketing perspective to get that kind of mental image of how people want to see that info.

I am developing systems to help people with THOSE stuck points. PM me if you have an interest in writing more valuably, I can try to help.

You have to do lots of reading not only regarding your chosen topic but also on your target market. That means reading articles, forums, blogs, facebook groups, etc. Don't let it overwhelm you though. Just set up a time, like an hour or so, and start digging in, study, and take notes.

    Good luck!

Pretty tough to create a product you don't know anything about. As noted above, if you're interested in the subject and want to become an expert in the area before creating a product, great.
The other way to go is to partner with an expert in the area - have seen this done numerous times, most often in an 'interview style' product.

That way you're relying on you're partner's expertise, and you have to pick up the ball in other areas of the promotion.

I would suggest creating a product about something you are an expert in. Everyone is an expert at a few things and I would start there.

If you try and write about a topic you know nothing about, it is usually very apparent to the reader.

Go to the forums and message boards for your niche. Start reading, interacting and asking questions. Here you will find what concerns those in this niche have so that you will know exactly what to address in your book.

Take notes. Decide on chapters based on their questions. Then either write it or outsource the writing.

Why would I buy a project you learned while making because you knew nothing about it before.

Why not stick to something you know something about?

Nothing is wrong with your idea of creating a product. But, do it on something you understand already.

As for the actual product, research what other sellers do.

I'd personally warn against MOST PLR out there as any sort of legitimate reference material to solve your problem.

Most PLR wasn't written by a true professional or topic expert - it was written by a writer who had a job to come up with 20 pages (or whatever) of material that could be sold as PLR.

There are some exceptions. But many think it's an easy road to overcoming a complete lack of knowledge, while in reality it's just a case of the blind leading the blind down that road.

Depending on the quality of PLR, I personally think PLR can actually be used to lead the blind into the light. I have learned about many niches through reading high quality PLR material, and have gone on to profit/create new businesses. However, I agree there is some poor quality PLR around, and lazy/ignorant marketers who don't know how to properly utilize the full power of PLR. Apart from outsourcing, PLR is still one of the quickest ways to create your own product, enlighten me if I'm wrong?

Everyone who ever created a product knew nothing about the subject at some point.

Immerse yourself in the subject for as long as it takes to become au fait with the main issues and problems that your intended audience wants solved. In reaching that level, you should acquire a broad familiarity with the everyday topics discussed by the community and the specialist terms and language they use. You need to know what everyone else knows before you can begin to tell them what they don't know. You also need to sound like one of them in your product.

Once you're in that position, you can research the issues that you are going to solve - the information in your product that makes it valuable to your customers.

Don't limit your research to the sources your audience can easily find for themselves. Use offline resources - books, manufacturers' data sheets, trade journals, etcetera. If you can talk to an expert via email or phone, you should be able to add value that sets your product apart from the rest.

People who make money as product creators are not always experts in the subject areas. Equally, the experts are often too busy doing what they do best to spend time writing information products.

      Good luck with your product.

I recommend not to go for such a niche where you have no idea or knowledge. There are unlimited niches, so just find out one in which you have interest, then know more about it and start working.

You will do much better in known niches comparing to unknown niches investing same number of hours.

I agree with those who advise not to venture into that territory. Do not fall with the guru myth of "become an expert on any subject in 3 hours!" Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating a bit, but the point is I would not do it. A better way is to interview experts and write that into a sellable product. My two sense!

You are right. People who complain about PLR have no idea that other (wiser?) people sell it (un-edited) daily and grin all the way to the bank.

Most PLR wasn't written by a true professional or topic expert - it was written by a writer who had a job to come up with 20 pages (or whatever) of material that could be sold as PLR.
    This is not 2008. The above is, however, 2008 thinking. We are not talking about 35,000 articles Just $2.00! (;

When you get beyond the MMO market, say into Yellow Canaries that sing the Star Spangled Banner then high-quality PLR can sell like hot-cakes!

    2 possibilities I can see.

either spend the time and learn a bit about the subject you are going into
and there's plenty of great places to do that for free...
google and youtube are a great starting point.

    or

you can spend the money and outsource the whole thing
the larger the project, the more money it will cost you
but an ebook or small video made from slides can be done for under a $100

and you'd be selling in less than a week!

    Cheers

    Borrow credibility.

Find the top experts on the topic for which you want to create the product and interview them. The key will be in the questions you ask which is the burning questions in the mind of your market.

    A simple ebook product

    1. Find forums in the niche you are thinking about promoting
    2. Spend some time and List the top 5 questions that are being asked within that forum
    3. research articles (plr) which answer each question being asked or outsource.
    4. use each article as a subsection of your ebook
    5. add a resource section with a number of affiliate links which also help solve the problems.
    6. Add a link back to your website and further resources.
In this case, I would use the ebook to build a list and hopefully earn some commissions in the process

Find out what the most common questions and problems are in your niche them approach someone who do has knowledge in your niche and ask to interview them with your common questions and problems that you found from the research you did.

Approach high ranking websites, blogs etc or get yourself out there for example I know nothing about yoga but I bet I could find someone who teaches yoga in my area that I could go interview or make a video showing how to do what ever my niche wants to know about yoga.

    You have a few options:

    1) Go to Google and research the subject, and create a product from it

    2) Have a ghostwriter or freelancer do it for you

    3) Get the resell rights for it

You're going to have to do some research somewhere down the line. So some work will be involved. Don't be lazy. Lazy people dont make money. And if you don't make money, you dont eat. And if you dont eat, then you get a job. And if you get a job, they coerce you into receiving $0.25 cent raises... starting from $7.25 - and try to keep you there... forever.

The answer is: either you partner up with someone who knows their stuff, or you dont create the product at all.

If you want to make money in this game, you must provide REAL value and solutions to your customers. What are you going to charge them for otherwise? a PLR crap written by a ghost writer who knows even less than you?

Moreover... let's say you make the sale. Congratulations, you now have a customer! Here's my next question though: how are you going to upsell that customer? how are you going to build a relationship with him to sell him high ticket products? what kind of BS emails can he expect from you if you dont know a thing about his niche of interest?

Make your business a favor and stick to niches you're familiar with. You want to create a recognizable name/brand around you and your website, and that can only be achieved if you truly know WTF you're talking about.

Your question sums up all that is wrong with 'IM marketing'. You want to create a product about which you know nothing and then sell it to people for hard cash!

Even if you 'educate' yourself how does that make you an expert? Why not sell others peoples stuff and take a commission - AKA affiliate marketing in the online world or agency in the real world?

There are a couple of things that you can do. The standard advice is buy plr/mrr and then simply rewrite the material.

This is bad because all you might be dong is re-writing crap. If the original source material is crap, you will put out crap, although highly polished crap.

so if you don't feel comfortable of writing from scratch or other such situati9ons like that, there are several different factors...

If it is subject you know nothing about...say ACNE...I would read everything I could. I would call doctors or other experts in the field and get information from them. If there are any products that they recomment, I would buy the product, check it out 10 ways to Sunday.

I would also do a keyword to search to verify the popularity of the item/field. If it is small, don't use it. Huge is great. Also see if sub fields, where your niche is, is popular. You don't want to get into a sub field or niche that doesnt have enough people to make it profitable.

Gather manufacturers specs, interview them, people who have bought the prouduct, other experts in the field. Learn about them and from them. Then create a product. Just my 2 cents.

In my initial post (removed by mods) I did mention the OP should educate themselves first on whatever niche he or she explores. I mentioned PLR as an alternative solution for creating a new product from scratch quickly. By conducting research and comparison shopping the OP should be able to decipher if he/she is acquiring good quality PLR. I personally regard material as high quality PLR based on a number of factors, excellent grammar being one of them, followed by a whole list of other things.

Fair enough. I hope that list of other things includes fact checking. Grammar can be polished, but spotting basic errors is much tougher if you don't know the territory.

I've acquired beautifully written PLR with so many inaccuracies as to make it unusable or worse, dangerous if published unchanged.

That's my biggest problem with people buying PLR on subjects where they have minimal or no knowledge. There are a lot of courses out there which claim that the "research and education" process can be covered by reading a few blog or forum posts and a handful of articles on an article directory or content farm. (I'm not saying that's you, just that it's out there.)

One way is to spend alot of research time right here in this forum! Myself and many other have learned soooooooooo much here over the years. There are all kinds of questions and answers in this forum. You can build relationships here. Find a subject that interests you and then start researching and learning about it. Then make a step by step product about it for the next person who is totally new.

    I have two thoughts...

A: Don't create a product you don't know anything about. Learn something, even it's just the basics. Even if you used PLR, how would you know it was any good if you really don't know ANYTHING.

B: I'm really surprised I didn't read this... (maybe I missed it)... Curation & Analysis.

Collect helpful resources, get permission to use them (or part of them), elaborate on it or ask other experts (such a bloggers) to give their opinions on those resources or how to use them.

You now have a complete report filled with great resources and expert advice.

You may have to pay for some of it, but it might actually be something useful by the time you're done.

Simple. You don't create a product about something you know nothing about.

    You have two options:

1 -- Find an affiliate product you can promote in your chosen market.

    OR

2 -- Find someone who is knowledgeable in the niche and have them create the product for you.

The key to any successful sales presentation is I.A.S.M, that is, "I am sold myself!". If you have knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for what you are saying, then the person reading it will too. If you know nothing about that topic or so little, then how can they believe anything you have to say? And, simply researching online won't fully educate you on a subject. Take time to evaluate what topics you already know and enjoy talking about and see if you can monetize those before trying to re-educate yourself in a new field of study.

Create something you know inside and out. It will sell because it will come from your heart.
Create small e-book and test it out.

OP is talking about "creating the garden shovel" - not marketing (selling) it.

To create any product you need to know the ins and outs of the market you are targeting or at the very least have access to that information. Otherwise you are merely an investor spending money for someone to create the product for you.

how I would go about getting information to create a product in a niche that I don't know anything about
The same way you would go about getting information for anything.

If your product was "How to scramble the best eggs ever" for instance, you might start with the eggs themselves. Then write a list of questions to be researched such as:

      1. Does it matter what eggs are used and where they come from?
      2. Where does the average guy find these eggs?
      3. Fresh or store bought eggs?
      4. What temperature should the eggs be stored at?

      Then take it further:
      5. Best way to crack the egg?
      6. What heat to cook at?
      7. Does your personal sea level or elevation matter?
      8. What kind of pan to use?

      And keep going:
      9. Butter, oil, or bacon grease?
      10. Use milk or water?
      11. Best way to whisk?
      12. Season before or after cooking?

Research the questions you would have and look for questions others have about what ever topic it is - and then do what you have to to find the answers.

The topic of the niche itself is going to determine where you need to go to find your answers.

The research in itself will also give you some clue as to if the product you are creating is one that people will pay for.

agree with that , making product to sale to people is like putting your credibility out there people consume that and make judge about your authority and reputation

so I would like to make product that make me passion about it

Its better you are knowledgeable about the product you want to create. Acquiring the knowledge makes you an expert in that area. To create a product in a niche you know nothing about, you first need to make a thorough research about that niche. In the course of your research, you would have gathered alot of information that would increase your knowledge. Also, get involved in a related forum and gain from the experience of others

I highly recommend to not create a product you don't know anything about it!
You must build authority and reputation with quality products. If you hire someone to create a product for you. He or she could not create really a product your customers want. Instead join some online marketing universities and forums. And learn everything you want.
    Create your product yourself!

If you research a topic, then you will know something about it.. It's more than what a lot of other people are willing to do. You just need a way to extract out the most useful and actionable information and arrange it in a way which can save someone time, money or effort.

What is the big appeal about this niche if you do not know anything about it? Why wouldn't you focus on something you are interested in and already have some base knowledge that you can expand on?

I mean if you are looking for a long haul project and don't mind putting in the effort to learn, best of luck.

If you are tied to this niche and have some amazingly positive skills to offer, consider a joint venture with someone who is really involved in the niche that you can work with.

Educate yourself. Experts become experts because they educate themselves and/or it's something they are going through personally. There's more than enough information on the Net on any topic to educate yourself thoroughly.

I would say do your research, you need to know what you are talking about. People get super upset when they buy something and the person selling has no idea how to answer.
    Research Always.
