Off the Streets to Online - 1st Post - Would Love Some Input

While I am no newbie to the Marketing World, I am quickly realizing the IM World is almost a completely different Universe.

I have done Guerrilla Marketing for over a handful of businesses, managed large corps marketing departments. Now, I am being introduced to the IM World and am at a loss as to where to dive in.

I have some ideas - particularly focused around Organization -- Home, Office, Life, etc.

I am contemplating trying to start by getting together some content, writing an E-book, putting together some Check Lists, Top Tips, and How-To's. OO maybe I could even set up a video series!

I think my biggest barriers are setting up the website... and getting away from seeing this as an actual service where I go help people organize.

I would love some insight as to what you think about my idea, what should be my next (or first, technically) steps, etc.

Also, for anyone that has done the more traditional style of marketing - what were your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

I think it's great that you're planning everything out before you execute.

But... Don't plan for too long! (I usually advise friends + Colleagues to figure out EXACTLY what they want before they do anything. But it seems like you already have an idea of what you want... So you're ahead of the game in my opinion).

My advice? Bust out a word processor and start writing.

Don't get stressed out about the technical stuff.

Envision in your mind what you want, yes, but never let that prevent you from taking solid action TODAY.

And - if you totally suck at building websites...

It's something you can outsource on the cheap these days. (You can get a wordpress blog installed for $5 on Fiverr, and then edit it to your hearts desire, or even outsource the editing too haha).

Just a quick brainstorm session chief.

I wish you nothing but the best.

    Humbly yours

    Sarevok of the WarriorForum.

What were the companies you did marketing for, niche wise. Also, what is it you actually enjoy.

Think about tools as you grow an idea. Don't think of them prior. Tools are: blogs, ppc ads, etc.

      • Target a niche market with proven buyers.
      • Research target market and find their most pressing problem.
      • Create or find a product to address that problem.
      • Build a Mailing List.
      • Cultivate an Ongoing Relationship With Your List.
      • Market to that List.
      Rinse and Repeat.

To answer your question: I had many challenges, but the one that stands out was discovering how to find my core market and how to target them most effectively.

In the beginning I had to get past the tire kickers, lookie loos, freebie seekers and wanna bees, before reaching the target buyers. You know the ones willing to actually pay cash to solve the problem my product or service offered.

I found I needed to find creative ways to keep my finger on the pulse of my target market and never take it off. Because the needs they have is a moving target. The pressing needs they have change and I have to be ahead of that just to stay even.

  • Another way to get started is to do some research, most especially about related websites and content. Try to read similar content online so you will get an idea on how things are done. It is also a good idea to regularly read and follow informational blog sites from copywriters or bloggers. You can definitely get a lot of handy advice from these sites.
