Should I install Windows 7 on a new computer?

Yesterday while out running some errands I came across a new laptop for a price that I just couldn't pass up. Only thing though is that it has Windows 8. And from what I have heard both on and offline is that its not as popular as the former windows 7 and even XP.

So I'm looking to you forum members as to your thoughts and opinions as to weather I should just keep windows 8 or have 7 installed?

I would without hesitation. I got a new computer last year and insisted on Win 7 Professional. No regrets. You might even be able to sell your license for Win 8.

Thanks for answering my post! I got a new Toshiba Satellite i7 laptop from one of the big box stores, and it was still $200 less then if I would have bought from amazon.com How would I go about selling my Win8 license?

Well, first get Windows 7 installed. Then if you have an install disc for Win 8 it will come with the license key. You can sell the disc and key on ebay or craigslist. If you don't have the disc you can still sell the key. Only thing is the buyer will have do download Win 8 and have the key ready when they install.

If you have any computer shops nearby give them a call and ask if they'd be interested, though you probably won't get as much from a shop than you would from a retail buyer.

You can't , it's hardwired to your PC... PC's/Laptops don't come with disks anymore (A few years now i think).
The OS resides in a disk partition in case you ever need to reset your laptop to factory settings...

I got used to Win 8 so now i'm comfortable with it, why don't you try it out before you decide to switch...

Huh? Actually, you can. The computer I have now has had three different Win 7 installations. Three different keys. All you have to do is reformat the hard drive and it will accept any key for just about any OS as long as that key isn't "devoted" to another machine.

Yes. Microsoft will make it extremely difficult for you to do however, but do it.

I'd go for Windows 7. It's plain and simple.

In Windows 8, it's like having a mobile operating system running on a laptop.

Hi, I actually have Windows 8 installed and you do get used to it; One thing I did was get a "start menu" hack which provided the start menu functionality like in Windows 7.

Having said that I do still prefer Windows 7 over Windows 8 so given the option I would go for Windows 7

    Cheers

If you have a big enough hard drive, you might look into repartitioning it and implementing a Multiboot setup. This would allow you to try Windows 8 and still be able to run Windows 7 if you find that you totally dislike version 8 (or 8.1, its latest incarnation). The latter, as I understand it, was brought forth to address complaints of users who were unhappy with version 8's redesigned user interface.

I like Windows 7 much more than Windows 8. I just bought a very fast and powerful laptop from eBay with Windows 7, for $120. eBay is an excellent place to get cheap computers.

I would much rather have Windows 7 than Windows 8.

As you have the installed win 7. You can use some day. Because the new laptop has an original version. After using a few months, you can change to win 8. Every people is going to use latest version of everything. So you should use the windows 8. There is no chance to go primitive erra. So you must use the latest operating system.

You can configure Windows 8 to pretty much act like Windows 7, so I'd stick with 8 since 7 will be unsupported before 8 will

    PPSSSHHhhhhhh...

Do NOT install Windows 8 - if like the German and Chinese government's: you know what's good for your business.

Windows 8 has back-doors built in. This is well known in the info-sec world.

Windows 7 is actually a solid operating system.

I was forced to buy a new PC which came pre-installed with Windows 8, I wanted Win 7 but no dice, so got stuck with it.

My verdict is once you get rid of the tablet crap and get the desktop back like '7 uninstall the unnecessaries, turn off some unwanted system stuff that runs regardless of whether you use it, tweak the memory usage within certain programs there seems to be no difference in performance to me.

However once again MS have arsed everything up as usual by removing the email client Outlook altogether, disabling the Snipping Tool (now you have to use PrtSc (all of it) and removing the old and very useful MS Works program, all you get now is basic Wordpad, and removing the old menu-style system for programs and replacing it with a silly slider with a search function, that you won't know about unless you read the blurb first.

To coin an Americanism, I would really like to smack those folks upside the head with a wet Kipper for fixing stuff that isn't broken, in favour of nailing the security aspects of the OS which is not that good as noted by the folks above. The Sandboxie program seems a good idea at this point.

I expect they have messed around with other things as well that I don't use.
Oh yes, and there is already a free upgrade to 8.1 which is a ridiculously large 10 GB download.

Given a choice 7 wins every time imo.

Few applications (and games) aren't compatible with Windows 8 at the moment. Better use Windows 7 in my opinion. Only when years later when Windows 7 isn't supported anymore, then it'll be time to upgrade.

Win 7 is very good, but I have installed Windows 8 on my all 3 computers since a very long time and I have nothing bad to say about, I think it`s a kind of prefference if you like new look or not.

    +1 for Windows 7

+1 Windows 7 when my users get a new home machine and it's windows 8 they freak out. 8.1 is better but they still freak out. you can get an oem copy of windows 7 for cheap.

windows 7 would be my pick your windows 8 machine might come with downgrade rights meaning you can call MS and they will give you a downgrade key (or better yet windows 7 recovery disks!)

You can't really go wrong with Windows 7, it's still the most popular Windows OS at the moment so pretty much everything that wasn't created 10 years ago should work fine.

I don't think Windows 8 is bad, but it was designed for high end systems with all the fancy toys like touch screen monitor and requires loads of processing power and memory to properly enjoy it. The option here is unlike the choice between XP and Vista before, where XP was clearly better and Vista is just... ugh...
