Let's talk AdBlocking and how to work arround them...

AdBlocking is very popular! There are so many free browser add-on's which take away all the adverts on a page - and they're getting more popular by the day!

This causes big problems for people in our industry... It is something which needs to be masterminded against, collectively.

So let's talk - what are the solutions?

I've noticed that some websites and forums detect that I am using adblocking software and they ask me to disable it.

Other sites (like DigitalPoint) pops up with a information box letting users know that some features on their site won't work because of the use of adblocking software.

So, what are the solutions? What are the costs?

Let's get a discussion going on about this problem and what we can do about it.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm happy running my ad blocking software. If I want to see something specific to a particular site I simply disable the software for that site.

I don't know ... but looking at it from the customer's side of the monitor, I quite like seeing ads, myself. (I'm a marketer - why wouldn't I be interested in advertising?). I know people here sometimes complain about seeing ads that target their interests from their browser history, and feel that their privacy's being invaded (though I think they can opt out of that, and/or avoid it, anyway, if they want to?), but I quite like it. Those are the things I want to see ...

If it bothers you so much, why not just use text links on your page like the links Wikipedia has taught us to click on?

Or put up your own ads using a mixture of text and images.

As a site visitor it's never worried me too much but I've kind-of trained myself to tune out ads on a lot of the sites I visit.

Text links is a good idea - thanks for the example - but my point is that there seems to be (slowly but surely) webmasters using anti-adblock methods, which detect adblocking software and asks to disable it...

Has anybody had expirience with this sort of anti-adblock technology?

In my opinion, anyone who goes out of their way to block all advertisements would have never bothered clicking on your ads anyway. So there's no real need going after those people in the first place (you should go after them, but not offering the same thing they already hate).

What businesses must do (marketers, etc) is adapt to change and come up with other/better ways to draw those people's attention. List-building and relationship-building being a prime example.

Those who are bent on having something their way are often loyal to it -- to the very end.

Point being: Keep your attention focused on offering your good services and building a kick-ass relationship, all while adapting to the fast and dynamic world known as the Internet.

(and no, i won't say Interwebs -- so sick and tired of that buzzword already).

When Internet marketers tout the virtues of ad blockers, you know it's a lost cause. I just pretend it does not exist to the extent possible. I certainly will not be installing it myself, as I know full well that's the price you pay for someone's free content. I find very few sites I visit have ads that annoy me. I'm more annoyed by things like autoplay videos. No thanks. I will read your news article.

I'm an end user before marketer.

For that reason, I absolutely love and endorse adblockers.

The best way to beat an ad blocker? It's simple.

Create content that your end users really want.

Just my $.02, and I wish you all the best.

    Cordially yours

Go and walk up to the average person on the street and ask them what an ad blocker is.

They will look back at you with a blank stare.

There is no issue here. 99% of normal people do not use ad blockers.

You're a marketer -- most people are not.

(On that note, one thing I do find weird is marketers who use ad blockers. Quite hypocritical really.)

If the ads are what pays for the content and you block the ads, you're stealing the content.

It may be legal, but it's ethically questionable. And, in the long term, dumb. Unless you prefer an all-paid content ecosystem.

Well, my natural preference would be to see all ads. However, a couple of years ago I picked up some malicious browser jacking bug that sprinkles everything you view with live text links - stuff that neither the site owner approved and in most cases is unwelcome by the viewer.

I tried everything I could think of to get rid of it but nothing worked. Spent a lot of valuable time looking for a solution. The malware is just another spam tool. So I ended up installing Ad Blocker. I have it turned off for many sites. Just another case of the bad guys forcing their crap onto you simply because they can followed by a heavy handed solution that is far from perfect.

  • i definitely like adblockers, when you visit a particular site, they give you much ads than its content, so here i love their functions (disabling these ads)!
But like you said there are some sites that force you to disable them, so here maybe they want you to see their ads clearly (they force you to see them) personnaly i hate these kinds of sites!

      Thanks for your insight.

I notice you have a very similar "loves, hates and rep" sections on your profile just to the left of your posts... Almost an exact copy of me... then you post in this thread.

Audacity. Originality. Gotta love it (that is, of cource, sarcasm - though I'm being put off from typing anything now!)

Edit: Worst still, you haven't even aligned it correctly.... Now I feel to change mine! Damn man you pretty much copied every damn detail... you changed "courgettes" to "greens" and "the secret weopon" to "my Secret thing" - whatever that is supposed to mean.... to me the only REP you have is a sad, un-original copy-cat.

      Major dis-like.

        TG,

The ad blocker doesn't solve the malware problem. It just hides it. That's dangerous, as it lets you forget something that could very well be an ongoing vulnerability for future exploits.

You mean, like using your other accounts here to thank yourself?

I hear ya, man. It sucks when people do lame stuff.

There's other way's to get Thanks than from using multiple accounts Paul, you should know this - everybody has a few loyal friends alie?

Is this going to turn into an attempt to expose thread or what? Everybody knows someone and something...

Let me assure you, there are better ways to "boost" a profile on this forum - if I wanted to boost my likes I'd post to the War Room

    Gh0zt,

You're right, which is why I said it was lame.

Look at your thread in OT about your sig being turned off. That will explain a bit, I think.

No - you mentioned that I posted something on a different account - then switched accounts to post it under this alias.

      Are you lieing? - No.

Have you misjudged the situation - yes indeed. My friend TS was visiting, we were on his account, and I posted a reply without realising that we were logged into his account, so naturally - I deleted it and posted it under the correct username.

      Peace
