Is there any value in domain names that are not .com or .net ? As in , let's say www.health-insurance.pw . Would someone pay money for that domain on flippa ? Now obviously if it was a .com it would have been worth quite a bit of $ , but a .pw ? Any ideeas ?

You could still sell it, but yes, it won't be considered a serious site when compared to a .org or a .com or even a .info website URL domain name.

If you're getting into the business of brandable domains, it's really .com or nothing. Country based domains such as .co.uk are ok but will only appeal to businesses focusing on that target country.

The example you gave also has a hyphen in between which makes it less attractive to potential buyers lowering the chances of a sell even further.

A little, sometimes, possibly. (I don't buy many, at all, but I've sold a few for more than reg-fee, usually together with the .com).

I must say I wouldn't dream of registering it to put on Flippa.

I'm not sure it's much of an example, to be honest.

I think "clever names" incorporating the extension in a word (I mean like "delicio.us" and even "chestpa.in") have a lot more potential value.

As with all domain-names, what they're worth depends on what you can sell them for, and that in turn depends not on where you sell them, but on your skills at identifying, approaching and negotiating with potential purchasers to whom they might have "added value" because of the nature of their own businesses. That's where almost all the real money is, in this game. One thing's for sure: if those people don't even know it's for sale, you've dramatically devalued its probable sale value (i.e. your income!).

For myself, for resale/speculation purposes, I'll stick almost entirely to .com's, thanks.

Well actually someone has tracked 225,000 "reported" domain name sales & you can see their stats below -

    -----------------------------------

"The market's relative ranking of Top Level Domains (TLD) is obtained as a by-product of the index calculation. The empirics confirm a domain trader's mantra: .COM is the most valuable TLD, followed by .DE, .CO.UK, .NET, .EU, .ES, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, and .MOBI." - source: Internet Domain Name Index (IDNX)

    com
net -75% less value then a .com
    org -84%
    info -90%
    mobi -97%
    biz -96%
    de -37%
    co.uk -74%
    es -86%
    eu -81%

    -----------------------------------

Now I have had strong .org sales so personally I value them & .net pretty equally depending on the category of name. Typically you will only get "maybe" 10% of the selling price of a .com for .net or .org names though the above chart says differently. Again - some category names are a good match for .org or .net names so the % value can be higher. I also feel .biz is more valuable than .mobi. Even then I would say .biz is worth 1-2% of a .com & .info at maybe 2%. I don't see .us listed but I place them about the same value as a .biz IMO. Some other extensions like .co, .me, .cn, .tv, .ca & other country specific TLDs also can produce fair size sales... often depending on novelty (examples, - .it, .tv, .me) & country size. Note - some ccTLDs often are treated as a "generic" instead of only a targeted country TLD by Google - see https://support.google.com/webmaster.../1347922?hl=en . Best to avoid registering/buying TLDs not listed there if you want to target a world market IMO. I don't think you'll have much success with a .pw

Now also see The Domain Aftermarket Took a Breather This Week But News About an Uncharted Blockbuster Bubbled Up for "reported" weekly sales (Note - GoDaddy/Afternic is unable to report sales at this time due to SEC quiet period rules surrounding Go Daddy's current IPO.) Year-to-date reported sales at DNJournal.com Year-to-Date Domain Sales Charts

DN Sale Price- Domain Name Sales Price and History hasn't been updated since Nov 12, 2013. You can search via keyword & results will show what they have in their database of "reported sales" from their sources. Understand that it isn't a complete listing as they aren't getting data from all sources available nor private or broker unreported sales.

.ws actually stands for West Samoa but Google does treat it as a generic country code TLD (yes they marketed it as a "website" hack. I believe they came out in 2001. I actually sold drug.ws for several hundred dollars in a short time period (I had 2 .ws names I bought when they came out if I remember). Only extra generic names would have any value in this extension IMO (of course a developed site can have more value in any extension). Actually I see someone re-registered drug.ws last year according to a whois check so that tells you that some generics will be dropped by people in .ws TLD

It depends on the domain and whether if you can reach the end user.
