Hey Warriors.

I regularly check giveawayoftheday.com for softwares that can help me build my business, and today they're giving away free licenses to an ecover design software.

I'm not in any way affiliated with them, nor have I tried the software myself as I always work with Photoshop, but I thought many warriors could find it useful.

check it out at Giveaway of the Day - free licensed software daily. Today: eCover Engineer 6.0 - eCover Engineer makes covers for software boxes, ebooks, magazines, business cards and DVDs.A professional cover for software costs a lot ... before the end of the day as they change offers every day at midnight.

Alex.

That's like saying, "Here. You can have all the air you want. Just don't breathe."

What do people do with this program? They make ecovers, business cards, etc.

What are those used for? Commercial purposes.

    Hi Alex
Thanks for that - I get the notifications daily but don't always read them....
Ran this one thru it's paces - very nice - It is a generator only which means you have to do your graphics in another program - get a free one here GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program
tho ecover engineer can add some grat effects once done - (angle, perspective, light source)
not surprised you use photoshop - your box sets always look so good
    cheers

I know it is a strange one... and I posted it to warn others who might jump on this "offer". I downloaded the software and before even unzipping it I went to read the readme file. After reading the term - I am still hesitating whether to install it or not. Who else is making or using ecovers, DVD-box, software-box and similar images besides the IMers?

Update. I installed it. It works. Now the dilemma is: to be a law abiding citizen and not use it to create ecovers for my report/books or... just disregard the #3. in the terms and go on with it?

Why to give away something if the recipients cannot use it?

Regarding the license restriction, I'm nowhere a law expert but usually this term means only that you can not use the software for commercial purpose using this license.

In other terms, you are not allowed to make money from generating e-covers (whether by using it in your own design business, etc.) but are free to use it for your personal projects.

After all, you use the graphics to represent the ebook you are selling - you are not selling the graphics, thus no commercial use of the ecovers or software.

    Hope it clears things up.

I agree with Alex here on the interpretation of 'commercial usage' in the TOS. Actually, he must have also seen the extensive discussions on the comments and in the forums on the GOTD site on this exact topic. So go for it and use it for your own projects.

BTW, thanks for the heads up on this one, I'm on my way to the site to check it out.

Thanks, Alex, I hope you are right in your interpretation

Now that I gave it a second thought... what you wrote makes sense.

That will be really helpful if you are creating your own ecovers.
    Nice update!

Does this software check it's license from GOTD everytime you use it?

I think I installed a free software from GOTD before and I noticed that it checks for valid license from the site everytime I use it...

If my memory serves me right I think the problem I has then was when I'm not connected the software won't run..

That's sometimes a problem with the 'phone home' bunch. I just disable that feature if my zone alarm doesn't catch it first. If the software doesn't work without it, oh well, I move on. I guess they can be as nosey as we let them, if we let them get away with it, that is. Give it a try, I say.
