"Ways Marketers Self Sabotage Their I.M Business? Your Top 3 please."

To quote Shakespeare, "we have met the enemy and ... it is in us!"

Often in our efforts to ...

  • Beat changing market conditions!
  • Beat the growing competition!
  • And beat the rising cost of doing business!

We often neglect or totally ignore our biggest competitor ... ourselves.

Self-sabotage is quietly one of the biggest (and sneakiest) obstacles most online marketers face, in my opinion. I know it's one of mine.

Being a recovering "control freak", it's often a challenge for me to get out of my own way sometimes. For example, delegation used to be a 4-letter word to me. But I'm getting better.

Here's my top 3 ways people sabotage themselves.

1. Not doing "enough" research before acting.
2. Doing too much research and too little acting.
3. Not learning from others mistakes.

Share your experience, what's your top 3 ways people sabotage themselves you've noticed?

As always thanks for sharing your vast (or limited) experiences.

Here's the article that inspired this question.

Good post! I especially agree with the 2nd one.

I don't have three, but I do have one - I think it's planning. Yes, it's important, but some marketers do it too much, I even had this problem, my girlfriend had to nag me to stop planning so much.

This is what I did to overcome that - I created an Evernote account and have a notebook dedicated to "strategic planning".

For example, I have an upcoming product launch, however, my mind is still thinking "Clickbank Landing Page Strategy". Why? My product isn't even released as a WSO yet!?

So I just spend one session creating a massive plan, and anything else that comes up, I just set a quick note saying "Plan for Affiliate Recruiting After Product is Finished"; "Create a Dedicated Effort to Finding JV Partners Once the Beta is Released" - it tends to get rid of my need to plan.

      .
Yes, over planning and under-performing that's a biggie. I've traveled down that road a few times myself.

Good girl friend to motivate (nag) you into action, sounds like a dozen roses moment to me.

Let's see...There are a ton of ways marketers sabotage themselves, but here are my top 3:

    1) Not learning from their mistakes.
I've spoken with a handful of failing marketers who have burnt through thousands of dollars in an effort to reach success. More often than not these marketers have tried the same thing over and over again and have failed every time they've tried it.

I often see people advise others to keep at it because success is often right around the corner. This isn't always the case. There are projects that, for one reason or another, are doomed to fail. If you continue pouring money into one of these projects, you could spend tens of thousands of dollars and still not see any level of success.

    2) Thinking there's a "secret" that successful marketers have that they don't know about.
Most successful Internet Marketers have spent a lot of time and/or a lot of money getting themselves into the position they're in. There is no "secret" we have that others don't have. Most of the information you need is right here on the forum. The rest can be gained by creating a plan and implementing it. The best way to learn is by doing something yourself.

    3) Thinking there's a software program or information product that's going to instantly make them successful.
There may be such a package out there. If there is, I've never seen it. What I have seen is the marketers who have the most staying power are the ones who are willing to put the required work in to build a great foundation for their business.

Easy methods of making money online are few and far between. When an easy method pops up, thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people jump on it and it soon becomes saturated. Stick with the tried and true methods like list building, affiliate marketing or creating and selling information products and it becomes much more likely that you'll eventually reach your goals.

Successful Internet Marketers are few and far between. Instant success is even more rare. Success is more often than not achieved through failing, learning from your mistakes and then trying again.

Amen brother. That's the day in the life of the Internet Marketer. Instant riches is the Hollywood version

    My three are:

    1. Driving traffic to your offers exclusively with free methods, or always chasing free stuff like free autoresponders...(this is a surefire way to kill your business, if anyone doing that has a real business? or even a business mindset?)

    2. Not tracking everything, and improving...(what I did in the past was creating a product, make some sales without even knowing the conversion rate, then say oh, this doesn't sell like I want, so I'd create a new product, again and again), and also...

    3. Not driving enough traffic to your offers.

Three online business killer. There's one more like:

    4. Ignoring the rule of momentum in your online business.

    1) Not caring about the people that they are marketing to.
    2) Sending too many sales pitches and not enough value.
    3) Trying everything under the sun instead of mastering one thing at a time.
