What is the #1 skill - above all else - we need to learn?

I am new

I am also finding that even building a passive I come of $10/ day is not easy.
WWorking through some programs to better understand Facebook ads, targeting demographics etc certainly helps.

But the question I ask of those making full time living incomes is simple -

What is the number one skill someone who wishes to also earn 100% of their income online MUST LEARN above all else?

I would love to hear some perspectives.
I currently work 2 hours a day to learn different things.
Am experimenting with cpa offers and Facebook and also list building.

To me if I (with a total three weeks experience) gave advice to someone with zero days experience, I would have to say my faith and patience are currently what's being stretched the most.

What say you?
Have an awesome one.

In my opinion to be patient and stay motivated is one of the most important things/skills. It takes some time until you build a profitable campaign, but if you don't give up and continue trying, testing, investing and fighting against the competition, you end up as a winner at the end and can live a great life will less work and lots of free time.

May I ask, how much should someone who is starting expect to spend aside from investing in a course or what have you (I have a copy of inbox blueprint and a Facebook ads programs on advertising before they can see returns?

I am doing things on a shoestring budget and each day of paying a few $'s for add with no returns hurts.

Yes, you're definitely biased, but I do think you are right to some extent.

Knowing how to write copy that is effective and makes people want to buy what you're selling is such a good skill to have.

You're practically writing copy on your website, affiliate sites, or any site you own. If you want somebody to click on that CPA ad, even if you aren't exactly selling directly to them, you are trying to convince them to input their information, and good copywriting is needed to do that.

The most important skill is simply the ability to stay motivated with a
single concept. It's when you switch between concepts every month
that you'll never find something that works. If you're motivated enough
to start with an idea - stick with it, at least until it's profitable.

I wouldn't recommend having faith that it will work. You'll never really
believe it yourself until you see that you're making profit. Once you
start making a solid amount per day, it's pretty easy to keep your
motivation. It's more of a challenge to get there.

I do agree. It's easy to go from one thing to another and to lose hope right away. Of course, you do need to make the right choices and make sure the concept, strategy, or method is worth following and is worth the time to put your hours of work into.

Motivstion to stick to one thing is definitely something we all need to remember.

First advice is....Stay away from shining object syndrome.... Where you try one thing...that too not with full focus and dedication...with dismal or no results and then move to another shining object...

If you have already purchased few guides in the IM niches....and still looking for new guide or methods...then my friend...In my opinion...you are still searching another shining object...There is no end to it....You will never achieve success without overcoming this syndrome.....We all on the other side are marketers and infact good marketers...who can present next shining object in a matter of few days....Which will again be purchased by someone looking for next shining object....

Just take some inventory of your skills and likings....and then go through this amazing forum...this forum have many golden nuggets....Then stick with one goal...one method...untill you succeed...

And as per your situation....I will suggest you to start with some service offerings to Warrior members....with your skill...If it is Writing...Then go ahead...smell some success......and with some experience and learnings create a passive income stream....then the next one....

    To your success!

I believe in marketing the skill you need to learn and teach yourself is called leverage.

Marketing is all about story telling and if you have the best product that saves the world but have no good stories and proof behind it, its useless.

Which is why sales pages, blogs, forums etc were created. It is to give value and connect with others who needs help and you get recognized for your authority by providing solutions to a common need.

The more you practice this, the leverage your authority gets and the more trust you get. Its like the stripes on your shoulders that makes you a captain

Ray came closest to my answer. I'm going to be a little more general, though.

The #1 skill you need is the ability to understand and connect with people. I consider copywriting a subset, albeit a very important one, of understanding and connecting with people.

Without that, you can have all the motivation, perseverance and leverage in the world and still make a pittance of what you could with it.

I think even with just 3 weeks experience you have hit the nail on the head. Internet Marketing, just like almost every other business, is NOT a get rich quick scheme. It takes hard work, dedication, and a bit of trial and error. Through all of that you need to have faith in yourself, your processes, and what you are trying to accomplish. Additionally, because it is not a get rich quick scheme you need to be patient and persistent.

Somebody already mentioned patience and I agree. I'd like to expand on that a bit. I see people here every day that are so eager to get started they don't take the time to sit down and make a plan. I think the reason for that at least in part is because they believe all the silly claims that this or that system or program is going to load up their bank account overnight and they need to act now before all the opportunity is gone.

Whether you sell stuff online, through conventional mail or in a brick and mortar store you are operating a business and need to follow sound business practices. What that means is that choosing keywords as your first order of business is silly. What I would suggest to anyone getting started selling anything anywhere is pick up a book on business. Small business, actually. I don't have a recommendation off the top of my head but there are hundreds of great books on the topic in print. Go to Amazon and pick a basic book on business, one that has lots of good reviews. This will go against the grain of many here but that's okay.

I suggest a book on basic business practices because so many people see IM as a market or a method or a niche or something else it's not. Internet marketing is a venue just like mail order or telemarketing or a lemonade stand even.

Take your time. Understand what makes a business work. Then pick a product or service based on your understanding of it along with your willingness to do the smart thing rather than the impulsive or short sighted thing.

Real business isn't hit and run. It's offering good stuff at a good price and with great service. That's what gets results. And again, take your time.

The number one skill, if you want to make money, is selling. It is both an art and a science.

To me, all the other things mentioned in this thread are important because they enhance your ability to sell.

You have to learn how to actually sell something because unless you do, there is no income. And all the other skills mentioned are wasted as far as Internet marketing is concerned.

I think many people confuse traits, skills and talents. To me, a skill is something that can be learned.

There's a number of skills that are needed, but let's start with:

Research - with good research skills you can learn so many things.

Headline writing - Copywriting isn't always essential as there's any number of valid ways to make money in IM without needing copywriting skills. But headlines, which are part of copywriting, are used in a variety of different ways, such as writing titles and decriptions for web pages and videos, using for PPC, call to actions, etc.

Can't nail it down to 1, but here are 2 that are absolutely fundamental:

    1. Finding markets and the desire within those markets that you can satisfy with a product or service.

    2. Persuasion and Influence through communication - this could be copywriting, yes or it simply can be an exceptional ability to connect with your audience, having empathy (someone like Gary Vaynerchuck who sells TONS of books and consulting, doubt he has a clue about writing copy, but certainly knows how to communicate with his market)

I'm glad to hear people mention copywriting, since I think writing is one of my strengths (though, I'm more of a technical writer than a copywriter). I don't have much expertise to offer since I'm brand-spankin' new at this, but I've been busy just trying to build information-rich content, nicely illustrated with infographics and photos, including fully researched product descriptions, all in a clear, (hopefully) easy-to-understand writing style.

Slightly off-topic, but a friend of mine keeps recommending Vaynerchuck's books, and for the life of me I can't see what personality trait makes him so successful. Not to single you out for his mere mention, but I've been wondering what the general perception of him is here.

Personally, I was immediately turned off by Vaynerchuck's "no-money-down, get-rich-quick" style. I think Vaynerchuck's approach is similar to late-night TV marketers of decades past, in that he's basically a motivational speaker who inspires dreamers to continue to dream, with little actionable advice other than to continue to contribute to his revenue stream. Apparently, "social marketing" is the new frontier for "no-money-down" pitchmen.

Last night, I sat through four excruciatingly grating minutes of one of Vaynerchuck's videos until he finally offered one small morsel of useful information--even then, he was simply shilling for one of his buddy's enterprises for an over-priced landing-page template subscription. There's nothing I hate more than wasting my time, watching videos with 1% content, and 99% hot air and self-promotion. In contrast, I've gotten more helpful advice on this forum in the last two days than I had ever expected. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

#1 SKILL: Ability to follow instructions

If you're a newbie who wants a free mentor to coach you to success, don't expect much on your mentor's side - and neither your's. In my experience, i've seen that the best results come when you follow everything that a mentor tells you. People want to hire mentors, and then question them on everything that they advise.

Mentors, if you really want to help people, make them pay for it. They won't question you then.

Great question Steven, you know if I had to start all over again I without a shadow of a doubt I would learn how to think not only like a leader and businessman but how to change my thinking to a more forward, positive direction. I worked years without moving ahead one bit but as soon as I started with that stuff my life and my results changed. First thing is to get a couple of mentors. One for personal development and keeping that forward mindset and 2nd a mentor in your industry. Life is too short to figure it all out on our own. Just copy what successful people do. It has to be the ability to Follow the Money.

This is the ability to recognize the markets in which people are spending money online - where, on what and in what quantities. Without this skill, all the other skills mentioned above will be wasted.

Put simply, being able to follow the money is like taking the right bus to arrive at your desired destination. Now imagine if you wanted to take a bus to City A but instead somehow found yourself on a bus to City B. It doesn't matter how much you know about City B or how willing you are to learn about City B, you will certainly not arrive at your destination, which was City A.

You might write good sales copy, have the perfect product, be able to follow instructions, have the greatest mentors and be a perfect salesman but if you are selling the wrong product to the wrong market (if you are selling something that nobody is spending money on) you are bound to fail.

So follow the money first, know what people are spending money on and find a way to give them more of the same. Then apply all the other stuff outlined above. Even if you don't see the results right away, at least you will be assured that you are heading in the right direction.

Quite frankly, if you think that you can't do it, or don't work hard...
Chances are you won't make it.

2end would have to be the SPEED OF IMPLEMENTATION.
Just :"taking action" isn't good enough. Bottom line is

      I'm going to say copywriting.

5 years into my business and i now see this as integral to all marketing efforts you have.

People are bringing up persistence, mindset etc but these are all things you should have in the business world anyway.

Those are like the prerequisites to be in business. Otherwise you won't have a business for very long.

The second skill I will mention is knowing how to market yourself. Being up to date on the ways that are best to drive traffic; because this is liquid and ever changing therefore you must be liquid and ever changing.

And to be clear these are not the same thing: copywriting and marketing. The former is essentially timeless and the latter can grow and evolve over time.

Master these two things and you can crush it in most markets

I think many people confuse traits, skills and talents.
I don't think it has anything to do with "skills."

I think I could teach a really smart monkey to do what I do as far as "skills," are concerned.

The key to success is all in the mind set. You either have it or you don't. You can't teach someone to be inquisitive and curious and innovative and etc.

So if I must, the most important "skill" to posses is the ability to be completely honest with ones self. Something that seems to be very rare around here. Most people who "fail" never had a chance to begin with.

The world is increasingly full of marketers, sales people, and entrepreneurs who want to run their own business. That's something that if you can be good at it, then you'll make a lot of money. However, it's pretty competitive... a lot of people are learning sales techniques, hype alone can only get you so far.

I'd say learn a real skill that suits you, that you can also use in your own business effort. For me it's web programming, some graphic design, and database management. That might not seem like passive income at first, but that's a long-term goal. By developing the skills that you can use in your own earning efforts, you gain the advantage of being able to learn a lot more about internet marketing, without the cost of having to hire technical experts for every business you want to make.

I know I'm coming a little from left field, but it seems like a lot of the posts in here are just vaguely motivational without much practical advice.

a lot very valid insight here

some say it's better to focus on one project, others go with conventional wisdom and have many projects, to "avoid putting all their eggs in one basket".

A pretty popular approach here seems to be combining these two concepts, creating a whole network of projects that benefit each other.

It's not meant like that. What people mean when they say that is; As a beginner start one project at a time. If you don't have the money to outsource 2/3 projects. Dont try to start 2 by yourself. Only people with experience can do this and even then its allot of work.

Focus on one idea at a time. Once it makes money, you automate it (if you need to) and you improve it a little bit. You can start another project and continue to manage your first one. But never start 2 at a time, not even finishing one half way and then starting another.

      Complete every project you start!
You can manage a million if you want just don't start more than 1 if you can't afford it.

Learn to outsource to quality workers and be willing to pay what that person is worth for a job well done. Don't simply think you can do it all. Most people are not a jack of all trades. I also believe that it is not skill, but understanding that is most important. It is easier for you to develop the skills needed if you're able to understand well. And Fast.

And to understand well, you have to learn to read between the lines. There are many kind-hearted individuals who are generous enough to share pieces of valuable information even in this forum. Though of course you musn't expect them to just blurt out all their trade secrets. But sometimes they leave hints. Or crumbs, if you get what I mean. Understand what they're really saying by reading between the lines, then do a little research, and connect the dots.

Most of my most profitable projects/websites are the result of this technique.

I've re-read all the posts in the thread, and have a better reply now. Again, I'm just a beginner here, but I thought mentioning a few of my "new" observations may be helpful: The more I learn about social marketing, the more I'm convinced that the exact same principles of marketing taught in any business school apply just the same. The most applicable classes for me were: marketing, management, consumer behavior, and market research.

The most important, and most difficult step for me was to analyze the market and determine which segment I could compete in the best. The first thing I knew I had to do was to identify a viable target market--not too big, but not too small. I stumbled over this first hurdle for years, until I bought a domain for one thing, realized it was too generalist, then had an idea the very next day for a more horizontally integrated market. I think this happened about two weeks ago now. Once I identified my segment, and named my domain, I branded every platform available (the only one I can't get is Instagram). Here's how I began:

    1. Self-assessment: What are you good at or knowledgable about?
    2. Market analysis: How large/small a niche can you compete in?
    3. Competitive analysis: How do you compare against competing sites?
    4. Market research: Try performing convenience samples to confirm your assumptions.

Perform a running SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of your closest-competing sites. How can you be better? How can you modify the niche? What are your strengths compared to your competitor's sites? What are their weaknesses? How can you exploit them?

As for research, we now have a ton of online tools which weren't available when I went to college, but I've found, other traditional research techniques to be just as valuable. When I worked in marketing (I work in television now), we didn't do squat until we gathered some customer data first (typically, primary research). Though not statistically significant, I'm a big fan of "convenience sampling" (convenience sampling picks respondents within a target demographic group subjectively, not randomly). Ask different slices of your demographic mix your questions, and you'll get real, primary data, real fast.

My #1 Tip for Lasting Success

There are so many things to think about when you first get involved with Internet marketing that it is easy to get confused.

Worse, that confusion quickly leads to the one thing that will always prevent you from making money: lack of action.

And it isn't just beginners. With so many things changing online, so quickly, even experienced marketers can quickly get overwhelmed. Information overload is at epidemic proportions.

So what is the answer? Why is it that some people can get so much done while others (the majority) quickly get bogged down?

      The answer is focus.

Focus - the ability to work on one thing at a time to get it right before moving on to the next thing - is the most important skill you can learn. And you can boil it right down to this: self control.

Most of us are like kids in a toy store where the Internet is concerned. There is just so much to find out, so many shiny new things to read about, new launches almost every hour, forums to distract us, emails to intrigue us, websites to revisit ... and oh, look at that new WordPress theme, or where can I get that lovely new plugin?

The more stuff there is out there, the shorter our attention spans become: by the time we've 'quickly' checked out the latest post in a forum thread we are following, whatever it was we were trying to do in the first place has faded from the brain cells.

I can forget what I was doing in the time it takes me to take a sip of coffee!

Mmmm. What was I saying? WordPress? Oh no - focus! That's right, Martin ... focus.

Nobody is immune to the endless distractions, but some of us have gotten better at learning how to block them out so we can get some things done.

Each year is likely to be even more frenetic online. Online marketing is growing and the number of people getting involved multiplying. And that means that in order to succeed we will likely have to work a lot smarter.

Not harder - even dithering around getting very little done can be very hard work - but smarter. We have to learn how to get two or three times more done in the same number of hours (or preferably less). And the only way to do that consistently that I've ever come across is to develop the ability to focus on one thing at a time.

If you work on producing an ebook to sell, manage to block out distractions and hold yourself back from starting a new project before you're even halfway through the first one, you might be able to go from nothing to launch in 7 days.

But if you start a second project half-way through the week, you'll be very lucky indeed to get either of them finished in a month. And the reality is that more than likely neither will ever see the light of day.

The key to success is to start a project, focus your whole mind on it until it is finished and then launch it. Without the 'then launch it' bit, you can't make any money, and you can't to the 'then launch it' bit unless you've focused on getting it finished.

It is a simple idea, but one that so many people fail to embrace.

As Marlon Sanders says, "It's either done, or it ain't done. Half done ain't done. Nearly done ain't done. And ain't done don't make you jack."

Focus is what gets it done.

One of the most successful Internet marketers I know has more products to his name than I can count, yet he works on his Internet business just one day a week. But he gets more done in that one day than most of us could do in a week because he gets up in the morning and focuses all his attention on getting 'done' before he goes to bed at night.

He knows what he needs to achieve in his one day a week and he makes sure that nothing distracts him from achieving it.

That's the way to succeed. Probably the only true way.

So how can you learn to focus?

You have to start small and work your way up.

Most of the things that distract you are habits. The forum you feel the urge to visit every hour is a habit. The news site you like to check out all day long is a habit. The long message conversations you have on Skype are a habit. Facebook is a habit, Twitter is a habit. Even reading your favorite newsletter is a habit.
Worse than being habits, they are major distractions.
They are fine for the days you don't have objectives to achieve, but big obstacles to your success when you need to get things done.

Wean yourself off the distractions. You don't need to stop doing all those things completely, but you do have to learn enough self discipline to limit yourself to a set time to do them each day. After that, close down your browser, set Skype to 'do not disturb', close your email program and shut the Tweet up!

Give yourself an hour without noise and prepare to be amazed at how much you'll get done.

And tomorrow, make it two hours.

Pretty soon you'll wonder how you ever got anything done before. And the truth is, you probably didn't.

Another method - and one that works wonders for me - it to take yourself off to a coffee shop with a notepad and pen and work the old-fashioned way. No company, no computer, no distractions.

You'll have to find a method that works for you, but my #1 tip is that finding your focus will be the the most valuable one thing you can do to turn your hopes and dreams into a successful business.

I would say the number one skill is to know how to effectively outsource. I mean we can learn all the tech stuff and what not but once we get the hang of things time will be more important. So to me outsourcing the right way would be number one for me.

  • I say the #1 skill to learn is Self Discipline and productivity. If you want success, when you need this. Find some great stuff on this topic, and it will help you achieve more in everything you do. Not just my perspective, top people like 'Brian Tracy' talk about how without it success is limited, and with it success is destined for you.
