Do your customers prefer PayPal or direct checkout?

Hey Warriors,

What percentage of your customers choose to pay with PayPal instead of direct checkout using their credit card? 10%, 15%, 50%, etc?

I realize much of this depends on the type of website, niche market, etc. If you share actual numbers, please remember to say whether or not it's a membership site, shopping cart, etc. Oh, and if you are offering upsells, please let us know that as well.

Thanks so much! Any insight you have is helpful so don't be shy!

But what type of website is it? Do you sell 1000 products or just one product in a very niche market?

I don't like taking time to enter all my credit card details online and will usually use a site that allows me to use saved payment information or Paypal. I'd prefer to use Paypal as it's required to login for every purchase as the purchase is backed up by Paypal against fraud.

I agree. But if you really wanted something,... would that stop you from ordering if they did NOT accept Paypal?

Absolutely! And, it has stopped me before. I just like using Paypal as they always back me up. I have used sites that allow stored credit card information. But, the reason that I shy away from those usually is how someone else can get on your computer and just go to town on Amazon (or where ever) spending your money on your saved credit card. This even goes for a child, who gets onto your computer. That person can just login, assuming you use a commonly known password and spend your money till it's all gone. Paypal is not like that.

Paypal is the preferred method by most persons because of it's security features.
Not much persons like to use there credit cards directly to make payments online.

This is true for me too, as I said before. Another option that some could use if they don't want to use a credit card is a prepaid debit card that you refill at a local store or online via your bank. So long as you don't link this card to your bank or credit card, then the only money you would lose if someone hacked/stole that card/account is the small sum you had in the card. This is usually not true if you are using your bank's Visa debit card online or another credit card.

Actually, credit cards have a lot more security features than PayPal as far as fraud monitoring and disputing unauthorized purchases.

  • I have done testing and it's about the same for me. I also just booked a hotel room on expedia using paypal, and on one of the sites I even saw Bitcoin, so I think people are getting use to options other then just the regular credit/debit card.

I use Paypal for convenience. If it's a site I shop at regularly, they will probably have my payment information, but I'm not about to go get my wallet every time I want to buy something.

  • Well the thing is PayPal can be used as a straight forward checkout depending on how you set it up. Just study the different ways for implementing PayPal's checkout page and you could set up to be a seamless choice.

My intention is not to dissuade anyone from posting but rather reiterate / clarify my question. It seems that most responses are merely opinions based on their personal preference for PayPal. But what I'm really looking for is data...

For example, you might say,... I sell an info-product with 1 upsell and 60% of my customers pay with credit card, and 40% pay with PayPal. or,.. I sell 1000 widgets with various color options, and 85% of my customer pay with PayPal. You might also include your geographic target (i.e, US, AUS, UK, Asia, Worldwide, etc).

I'm not sure I can get more precise than that, and I certainly don't intend to offend anyone, but opinions without data are just that,. . . opinions.

My last project was very successful, but it took a while to learn that my geo target was primarily US citizens. And that explained why 93% of my customers chose to pay with PayPal. However, PayPal isn't so popular in other countries. In some cases, VISA, MC, AMEX, and Discover, are not the preferred cards in other countries -- such as China for example, where most card holders prefer Diners Club, Bank of China, and UnionPay.

On the flip side, a shoppingcart website with 1000 widgets geo-targeting Asia, without accepting the cards popular in that region is leaving loads of money on the table. (ask me how I learned that expensive lesson )

Again, without data, your opinion doesn't really matter --and neither does mine. Your target area, merchant percentages, and industry is far more relevant.

In my experience, on my own sites, Paypal performed better, but that was targeting a US demographic. I personally prefer Paypal simply because it means I don't have to get up and get my wallet. And I don't have to fill out as many forms.

Re: Paypal fraud vs. credit card fraud protection -- I recently had my Paypal card number stolen and 2 credit card numbers stolen. Paypal was about 1,000 times easier to deal with and get things fixed than the credit cards. They were also a lot nicer about it.

I did some extensive testing on this back in 2010 and PayPal performed much better than other payment options.

It has become very widespread and trusted among many people.

I have had a great experience working with PayPal... much more than other merchant services than I've done business with in the past.

Paypal gets my vote, basically majority of the people use Paypal. If you are going to buy something through paypal and use your credit card and worried about buying a product or whatever.

Firstly the money in the account you have with Paypal you can withdraw it out then use your credit card with Paypal for that transaction which gives you more protection. Your credit card company is more likely to compensate you then Paypal in that situation.

Correct me if I am wrong but I have being told that.
