Tell me what you think of this idea to make $300+ a day

I've been thinking of ways of creating some cash and this idea popped into my head.

What if I was to create a website (or have one created for me) offering a website design service. I see from doing a bit of research online you can ask quite a lot of money for a website package.

So, say I was to advertise my service using PPC and offered a complete website package for $795 which includes everything, but the customer only pays after they've seen a selection of designs and they're happy, instead of paying upfront.

I could go to a site like 99designs.com and start a project and offer a prize of $350 to the winning designer.

I show the customer my designs, he/she picks the one they like the most, I pay the $350 for the design at 99designs and pocket a $445 profit (minus PPC costs)

What do you think?

It could work, but you may want to consider using some other methods to drive traffic to such a offer. PPC can drain you if you don't know what your doing. Try to use some free advertising until you get that first sale and then use that money as if you never made it to utilize ppc Sense it is not scared money you will have no problem putting whatever action plan you have into play

My advice? Instead of asking an opinion here first, where you will either:

    A. Get discouraged by leeches and vampires and never do it
    B. Get discouraged by well-meaning experienced warriors who will inadvertantly make it seem more difficult
    C. Get ripped off by someone who has no fear and will execute and adjust.

I suggest you just be person C - go do it, test it, try it.

Then you can come back here and tell people how much ass you kicked.

    Keith, Great advice!

To further that, I would setup an outsourcing partner and you can get the site design outsourced for much less than $350! This way you make more! ; )

      GoGetta,

I think the reason the OP is going to use 99designs.com is because you can get multiple designs done and let the customer pick the one they like.

If you outsource it, you get one design.

Tell me if I'm missing something here.

Why did you tell everyone this idea? It sounds great and now this might flood the market. I hope that you can make a busk out of it for your sake. I have the feeling others will.

I've done the packaged web design thing and it's awesome (it's called "Offline" around here, because people market the service to businesses in their local area, even though you're thinking of doing it online which is also good). I don't know that I ever got to selling a website *a day* but even every few days is good, especially if you sell the hosting/maintenance along with it.

Only way you're gonna know for sure is if you give it a good shot though, noone's gonna be able to tell you that here

As someone whom owns a web design business I would offer you the following advice, (take it or leave it).

    1. It is not like flipping a stand-alone product or a single design. Web design can be very laborious and tedious, you have to factor in the number of changes and make sure you understand what the client needs or you'll see your profit dissapear quickly.

    2. The process can take weeks and months to complete, unless you are doing very small sites. This is mostly due to the customer not being ready with content. So you'll need get deposits up front and final payments when complete. You'll need a cash buffer to make sure your developers get paid on time.

    3. You need more than one designer and developer. If you put your trust in another single freelancer your project is dead if they get sick or over worked.

    3. Make sure if you find a designer and have an agreement in place that they can't advertise the designs they are doing for you all over the web.
If your client sees that you went to 99 designs they could be upset and may tell others that you simply outsourced it to the lowest bidder.

    4. If you want to make serious money get to know everything you can about the business and differentiate yourself somehow. This will take a little time, but you should have a basic understanding of usability, layout, fonts, colors, purchasing process, SEO. If a client comes calling they will likely be comparing you with several others. They want to feel comfortable you know what you're doing.

GO for it, learn in action, raise your prices as you gain more knowledge and experience.

It could work and I think that it is a good idea. Do some research and see if it would be profitable for you or not.

Take action after you know in your mind what you are about to do and if it works, great.

It doesn't hurt to try things and it is a good idea to take action when you have an inspiring idea in your mind.

Good luck man and let us know how it went.

  • Shadowhawk,
Pull another $100 out each time by signing the customer up for webhosting through a Hostgator affiliate link. You could just direct them to a banner on your website when they purchase the design. I think the idea sounds golden, but I'd be wary of PPC as well.

yeah, why not go for it - and sign them up via Aweber affiliate link as part of the deal too - of course, the sell on that to them is the ability to reach present and potential clients/customers via email autoresponder... special offers, coupons - you know the drill!

      Best,
      David
