Should you buy a domain name for your newsletter?

What do you think of buying a domain specifically for your newsletter or email list? This domain would have a lead capture page (and maybe a privacy page) and an on site archive for previous newsletters/emails sent to your list.

This could be linked to from your main site or blog.

Is this something you would do?

I wouldn't do it (too lazy). Why would you want to do it? You think this would dramatically increase sales? I doubt it lol. Whatever you have to offer - just sell it. Don't worry about the minor, sub-atomic details. Just sell your product, collect money, and live a great life. You don't have to do so much work to sell a product to your list. And you're doing a great thing by having a list in the first place. So get them to like and trust you, promote your products (along with great email info), and sit back and chill.

think about it: if you are in newsletter and receive an email without any website, do you trust it? make a simple website! just buy a domain and connect it with google blogger . be professional. respect your members

Absolutely Yes! But you have to put it up further.. You got to own a dedicated ip adress as well. Owning your own domain and ip address ensures that your messages is out of spam (considering you don't use spam words intentionally)

It also increases your clickthrough rate based on my experience. Maybe because they are familiar with the domain.

You arent guaranteed inbox because you use a domain. But anyways, you could use a domain highly related to your website, that either has a squeeze page like someone else mentioned or redirects to your main domain. Use your main domain for transactional emails, and the alternate domain for the newsletter. The reason is, you don't want to have to worry about getting a bad rep on your main domain in case some idiot decides to complain.

        Johnny,

It seems pretty clear to me - if you already have a web site and the newsletter is about the business at your web site, then "no" you don't need a separate domain just for the newsletter. It could confuse your subscribers and it won't help you to brand your business. Keep everything consistent and coordinated.

If, on the other hand, you don't already have a web site, then "yes" get a domain for your newsletter and also put up a web site. Whatever you're selling (you are sending out a newsletter to help you sell something I hope), you should have a web site. You need to provide a way for your subscribers to contact you, to read your privacy policies and terms of service, to learn about you and your business, your products, etc.

It makes little sense to put up a domain to simply have a lead capture and a place to store previous newsletter issues.

I would not try to put an unrelated newsletter on a domain and site that had nothing to do with the topic of the newsletter. In that case, put up a simple site with all the essentials and separate the two businesses.

If you want to send out newsletters then you'll need a domain name or they will go straight into the spam box. So yes make sure to get a $10 domain name, build a squeeze page on it and you're good to go

If you already have a domain for your main site or blog, why not just use a sub-domain?

    newsletter.example.com

    Simple and reinforces branding...

For me, it would be a mistake.

I want everything branded under my pen-name and my main domain-name for the niche. I can easily see disadvantages to having a separate domain-name specifically for my opt-in process, but can't see any advantages at all.

I have two .coms with subscriber.domain subs specifically for sign up and delivery. There is no content on the sites.

    If it helps you.

    1. Go to google and type in the term tk domain name
    2. Register the domain. Yes it is .tk register for a year and yes you can renew it infinitely
    3. IMPORTANT HERE ~~~ you are tempted to enter DNS but stop and do NOT
3a) forward the domain to google.com
    4. Now login using whatever you want to (facebook, google email etc)
    5. Login and get to the option for name servers etc and here is where you want to enter the DNS
    6. Go back to your hosting cpanel and install whatever you want (Wordpress, FTP directory etc) and in this instance use the above domain.

    I did this
    I own stevencampbellfitness.com
I warned to have free.stevencampbellfitness.com forward to a squeeze page and wanted to use wordpress.
I forwarded to scffreefitnessreport.tk and installed the ultimate coming soon page, used the elements I wanted and created a squeeze page (I also used youtube short code to autoplay youtube)

Now I can have a domain related to the newsletter, and can change the forwarding of the sub domain anytime I want.

    Bonus
Doing it this way allows you to use the sub domain on a youtube channel where you verified your site.

It really depends on what type of business you are running, but I would certainly buy a domain if it was the right fit.

I would use a sub domain for that instead of developing a completely new website.

    Keyword here is branding.

A lot of time, effort, intellect, and money is spent on branding. A domain name is an essential part of the mix.

yes its simple to build a $xx,xxx a month business.

domain, hosting, autoresponder ....and TRAFFIC lots of it.

people make it so hard, and spend time jerking on about names and all rest. Its silly, as dan kennedy says, all that makes not sense, its all in your marketing stupid!

I was doing it all wrong, until a few warriors helped me, and quit my job a few months later.

You have a very good outlook on internet marketing.

As you said, trust factor is a huge deal online. If everything is coming from the same site (or main site/subdomain), then it will lend more credibility than if it's coming from a secondary site.

A very good point! And, something that might be important for a person who doesn't already own a website/hosting. Mostly, I think this is a technique used by beginner marketers who have not taken the time to secure hosting and who are just planning on promoting an assortment of affiliate offers as they have no product of their own to promote.

Thanks for this suggestion. I like how it keeps everything on one site. Just easier to manage.

Thanks for your input. And, I agree. I don't have a separate domain for my current email list. This is just something I have seen other marketers do over time. And, it leaves me wondering exactly what products they are promoting as the email list box is on a page with no mention of what they are affiliated with. If I go to an electronics blog online and see the subscription box, then I know signing up will get emails in my inbox about electronics. I'm always leary of signing up for emails from a stand alone site even if 'tips' on a specific niche are promised as I don't know if they will just spam me night and day about numerous products in the niche.

Thanks for taking time to respond back on this situation. And, I am in agreement with you. I like to keep everything (concerning one product) under one 'roof'. This is just something I have seen others do, so I wanted to know what you all think of it or if it's something you would do.

depends if it is related to your existing site. If it is, no need to. If it is not, I would.
