Paypal Button Warning...

ok.. I'm hoping this is going to save some people some real grief and aggravation.

First, if you put something up for sale using a paypal button, here or anywhere.. first, be sure to name the button in paypal. Paypal will automatically save your payment buttons and you can always go back to edit them later.

Which brings me to my point. If you raise the price on whatever you're selling, be sure to go in and EDIT the button you created. DO NOT just 'create a new button.'

Here's why. A friend of mine had a book for sale. After 10 copies were sold at the intro price, the price would rise.

Rather than edit her button, she just created a new one at the higher price.

Although she changed the links in the offer itself, some guy decided to actually 'save' the old payment link. And today, several days after the price went up, he went ahead and clicked on the payment link he saved. Since she did not 'edit' THAT particular button, all the original payment information was still in place and he was able to purchase through that link at the old price.

So just be sure to EDIT your payment buttons, not just add new ones or it could happen to you too.

I hope this keeps someone from 'getting caught with their pants down.'

Warmest Regards,
Marcus

    Hey Marcus

What if you have just created a button but didn't save it and use it on a sales page. Can people save it and still access it after the page is down later when your sale is over and the page is deleted?

    Regards
    Vince

      Vince,
Paypal autosaves every button you create, so yes.

      Go to your Paypal

      >Merchant Services
      > Buy Now Buttons
Right under "Step 1" where it asks you for "Products", there's a 'Note:' underneath with a link for "Go To My Saved Buttons" ... click it

You'll get a list of all your buttons...

Choose one... and to the 'right' you'll see a drop down list that says "Actions"... click the drop down arrow and you'll see 'Edit'...

the rest Paypal will pretty much walk you right through. It's just like 'creating it' only you can change any of the fields.

      Warmest Regards,
      Marcus

Surely we are talking about one selfish idiot here.

I am sure most buyers do not have a clue about the finer points of defrauding a merchant - whatever the method

        Corwinnx,

This is great advice. I use Delavo, and I think when you hit delete, it also deletes the product sale inside PayPal. But I have infact been in the situation where I bookmarked a paypal link and when the prise was raised, I guess the seller forgot to delete the product on the discounted price and I got a email, she was a little upset, but we got it worked out. But after all, if your in that situation or have a bookmarked paypal link that is a little old, then go back to the sales page and double check the price is still the same as on the link. Or for the cheap people out there....

        Thanks
        -Reid

          Ken,
I agree with you... it's only one guy that I know of...

And you're right.. he was completely trying to scam too.

After he purchased at the old price, he asked for delivery (she doesn't automate like most of us do).... she told him it would not be fair to the people who bought within the first 10 sales..

She refunded him and refused delivery..

He argued a bit, tried to get a little 'pushy' with her.. but gave in and paid the full price.

The moment he did, he said "ok.. I respect... blah blah.. and if I don't like it I can get a refund, right?"

She has no refund policy and politely ignored the question... knowing what all already know.. that this was his exactly where this was going....

So she sent the product, and lo and behold, not even 30 minutes went by, and there he was asking for the refund.

So I just thought I would try to save someone some embarrassment should this happen and definitely some aggravation if it happened to be another troll like this guy.

          Warm Regards,
          Marcus

Definitely a good lesson to be learned. I have used these buttons but never thought there would be a difference between new buttons and editing buttons. Thanks for the warning...another to add to my security concerns.

            Mary,
I just saw your post.. we must have been writing at the same time.

Luckily, she doesn't automate, so she was able to maintain some control over the situation. I haven't heard from her since so I don't know how she handled the refund request.

But it's funny you said what you said about if he would have just asked for a refund.

I had an offer up where we were letting FIFTY copies go for a really low price.

The product had phenomenal reviews and testimonials, and I get a message from someone asking if they can buy it at the intro price and "I'll post a good review if the product is any good."

If this guy had said to me 'man, I'm flat broke but I really would love to get this book and I'll do something for you in return for it...." I would have GIVEN it to him... and expected nothing at all in return.. and I have more than one 'coaching student' who can vouch for how easily I say, 'don't worry about payment.. let's just get you on track.'

It was the "I'll give a good review if the product is any good" that just came across as soo arrogant, especially considering the vast amount of good reviews that were already quite clear for the eye to see.

It was all I could do not to respond with 'your arrogance is exceeded only by your ignorance.'

But alas, I had a good laugh with my internal sarcasm and politely explained that that would not be fair to the people who did buy one of the limited copies for the intro price, and I gave him the option of buying the special one time offer that only buyers of the first product have seen, and which includes the original product with Resell Rights.

            Cheers everyone...

            Marcus

I had no idea there was even a save feature where you could edit old buttons. I hope they didn't send the product, or did the person get a download immediately?

The thing is, if they had just asked for a discount before trying to screw the person, they probably would have gotten it with no problem.

    Marcus,

This is good advice. There are definitely a lot of people out there using Paypal and various other systems who don't remove old products and suffer from this problem.

For WSOs, this is exactly the kind of thing my WSO Pro service solves with Paypal. When a price changes or product sells out, there is no way anyone can buy it at an old price.

It's so simple to secure our products in most cases, so why not do it and help keep everyone honest?

      Mike,
Thanks for that tip. I clicked on the link in your sig for WSO Pro and it took me to a search results page.

I clicked on it too and got this message - "Firefox can't find the server at www.warriorplus.con." Yeah there goes a real pro. A .con pro.

Oops... messed that up a bit didn't I?

I just changed my sig a bit, and apparently copy/paste was not my friend this time. All fixed now.

          Thanks for the heads up!

    Marcus,

It would be a good idea, if you want to increase or decrease your price to go into PayPal and edit everything there rather then create a new button.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. Good to know.

Another way to combat this is to use a custom Paypal IPN script where it will check the current price so that if the buyer manage to "hack" your button, the script will not deliver the product unless the correct price was paid for. The only downside is it's not quick to setup and you may need a programmer for it.
