My site gets 3 million page views monthly - how to monetize better?

Hey everyone,

First post here. I've been reading for a few days and I'm intrigued by all the info offered here.

To give you a quick background on myself, I own and operate a community-type site that does over 3,000,000 page views monthly. My unique count is relatively low (about 90,000) considering the page views but I have a huge engagement factor and the average length of visit is about 18 minutes.

This site has been a technology play but the financing well to support our continued growth has run dry and it's become increasingly harder to find investment money in this environment.

I need to come up with better ways to monetize the site as I'd like it to become self-sufficient ASAP. We're launching a section that'll involve the sale of a premium product - and will attract buyers - but even this requires more resources (programmers' salaries, etc.) to complete the buildout.

With the metrics I gave you, what kind of money do you think I have the potential to pull in monthly through affiliate deals and anything else that may generate revenue? All I currently run is CPM ads and the CPMs aren't what they used to be. It's just not enough.

I KNOW there's a better way to do this...and I know that if there's anyone with an answer, it's you. Would love to hear about all of the great opportunities I must be missing out on because of my passive approach to my user base. Hopefully some insight can help me turn this around.

Thanks, and I'm happy to be here!

Running your own advertising program would probably be very good for you. Other companies would love to benefit by receiving traffic that you could provide. I custom coded my own ad program for a site that does similar traffic, and I just about tripled what I was making on adsense.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Thanks for the suggestion - but who do I approach for sales once I have the program up and running?

Our website's on the same boat as dandee0014 (thx since your article's what made me signup/reply)

At our best, we received 6 million pageviews/mo. 600K-800K uniques.
Now we get 2-2.5 million, and about 300k-400k uniques.

Should I start a new thread? Because I'd like to receive similar tips on monetizing our Twilight Fansite better:

        Here's our website: bit.ly/S8OJ1

We are running ads from valueclick, rightmedia, infolinks and we're also now starting to close big ad campaigns from publications who've approached our website.

        What else can we do?

BTW, Here's the things we need help with:
        - advertiser (RFP) proposal review (are we charging enough for advertising?)
        - Seeking Affiliate Professional who can monetize our website better & receive a percentage of our ad revenue (or monthly fee)

        Thx

What type of niche is your community site?

Otherwise it's kind of hard to brainstorm for ideas. I don't know what type of CPM you're getting for ads, but maybe you should try other more prominent ad networks that can better leverage your type of traffic?

      The niche is sports.

As far as CPMs we're getting, it depends on the network and which inventory gets filled. Can range anywhere from $0.20 to $4.00. Average is probably about $0.80 or so.

I agree with dvduval. I believe that you will have no problem selling advertising spots to businesses if you have 3 million+ page views a month.

That is a LOT of traffic.

What kind of businesses are you talking about? Bigger companies or smaller sites? The bigger company approach usually gets caught up in the bureaucracy of things and often they'll say we're "too small" for them so I'm not exactly sure where to look. As for smaller sites, I wouldn't know where to find them. We just closed a monthly sponsorship deal with a company that'll net us $2,000/month but our expenses are still considerably higher.

    Dude.

Sell sports memorabilia. Sell tickets to sporting events. Get a fantasy league going and charge a small membership. Definitly run ads.

here ya go, a bunch of ticket sales affiliate programs you can choose from:

Thanks for the suggestion about ticket sales. Ironically, the company we just landed the $2,000 monthly sponsorship deal with is a ticket company so I'm not sure that promoting additional ticket sales would fly.

Would you be pushing out email offers regularly? Daily? Weekly? I have a database with about 58,000 registered members. Just trying to figure out how much potential money is going to waste every month through my lack of action on all of these opportunities. Of course, I don't want to overwhelm my users either.

    Hey sent you a PM.

Looks like Randy and me posted at the same time

However if it was me I would:

    - Sell Memorabilia and other sports related products, do this via direct marketing campaign.

    - Create a membership, I don't know the site so I can't make any ideas or suggestions. However, with 3,000,000 monthly views, a $10/M membership can pull in 1,000+ users very easily.

    - Sell Independent Advertising by creating a formal proposal and sending it to marketing reps, pays better then any ad network

    - Your own ad network as stated above

Collect email address by either allowing people to signup, or having a newsletter that people can subscribe to. Email your list weekly with news, affiliate offers, and tips. This will sell affiliate product, and get people to keep coming back to your site.

I have 58,000 emails from registered members. Think I could do some damage with this? And I wonder how often to email them without driving them crazy.

Based on the rule of thumb when it comes to subscribers:

    $58,000 per month should be
your earnings, obviously plus or minus $3 or $5k.

Not Daily, Once a week or twice a week, and not a different promotion each time, run campaigns of 4 emails for two weeks for one product, then bring them some valuable information for two weeks, then run another campaign for another product.

No, we don't really have an incentive for opting in.

      - constantly working on the site
      - growing the forum community
      - made sure our design was the best in the competition
      - loads of trial and error with features and advertisers

We also have a pretty decent media kit:
      twilightersanonymous.com/mediakit

what made us lose fans/followers was hosting.
we've had a bad run w/ hosting providers.

But now we're set and we'll be with these guys (forever I hope).
      VPS net: bit.ly/vps-net-cloud-hosting

Scalable nodes is the way to go. Also amazing site speeds.
Our site used to load 28sec, now we load at 4.7sec.
Well, we're also using CDN's but still. Their serving speeds are intense.

We also get linked by Facebook.com/twilight so we get surges of traffic.
With VPSnet we can add nodes and increase resources unlike other web hosting companies out there.
