How much traffic should I expect? How do you forecast traffic?

Is there a way to estimate how much traffic I could expect from a given keyword assuming I'm on Google page 1 at say, position five or higher?

I don't want to invest the time or money to get ranked if the potential result is not enough traffic to make much money.

I got both of my first two sites ranked on Google page one. The only problem is the traffic is really low, about 3 page views per site per day.

I'm looking for a formula of some kind that I can run that will give me a feel for how much traffic I could expect.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts?

There is no formula because you cannot predict what keywords people will put in the search engine when you are advertising.

I am Nº1 on Google for - "red and yellow spotted paint" and - uppitytowntraders but nobody searches for them.

All you can do is use the tools available and try to guess which keywords are going to be popular search terms that buyers will use.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

You can get monthly search volume from Google External Keyword tool and then make an estimate of the percent clicks you will get. Of course that number depends on your title displayed in SERP listing and the text associated with the listing. I usually use 30% CTR on my SERP listing if in top 3 of page one to estimate traffic for a keyword.

Kinda the same way you used to forecast rain... sacrifice a goat and hope it comes flooding down.

Nah seriously... very tough question with no definite answer.

Google -> Google Keyword Tool... then find out what the search numbers are and it should give you an indication of search traffic and popularity.

This might be something you'd use before committing to the site.. defining a keyword you want to dominate.. with high traffic.. and then dominate it.
