I plan to start a local website portal + community... How should I not be a slave to Facebook?

Hello Warriors,

I have this idea for a website that's focussed around a particular city/country, and it'll be a portal of deals, attractions, events bookings, news; and will have a citizen-driven community focussed on certain social causes for the city as well.

All that is nice; but Facebook nearly eats up all the traffic share, especially in the target demographic I'm after... the 20-30 year olds. Facebook is like a frickin' plague in the city I'm about to build the site around... including myself. It's not just in my city. It's practically everywhere, but this target demographic I'm after is constantly and at all times checking Facebook notifications and scrolling endlessly.

What should I do that my site isn't a slave to Facebook? It's not that I'll be competing against Facebook... even for my target demographic. And I sure can use Facebook to drive a lot of traffic to the site. But, somehow I'm not too confident that'll be a big number. People like to share social awareness related content on Facebook, but they also primarily find it on Facebook. So, a lot of that traffic remains within Facebook.com. That's the tough part. Any solutions? Ideas?

Thanks in advance
