Hello Warriors,

Right I have a domain name which will work really well over here in the UK but I also think that it will be the dogs danglies in Australia too.

Do .com's show up in ozzy search results?

or is it gonna be easier to buy a .com.au domain?

Danny

.coms do show up in Aussie search results, though I'm not sure if they will if you select "Sites From Australia Only", when you search.

You *may* need a .com.au for that. Having said that, to get one you need to have a business registered in Australia.

    cheers

Hey I'm in Aus... .com show up fine but if you select the "pages from Australia" option google gives priority to .com.au domains.

To buy a .com.au you need to be a registered Australian business so forwarding is probably a little tricky.

Get the dot com hosted on a server physically located in Oz.

You can probably set this up online, you don't have to be there.

      Danny,

Where the website is located is a prime factor in the rankings it can achieve in that location.

This, as well as the domain ending are two important factors.

.com .net and .org can all rank well even in country specific search engines, but for best results it should be hosted in that country as well.

      Danny,

Have a look at the geographical targeting feature in Webmaster Tools (in your Google Account, if you have one... or just create on, if you don't). I have sites hosted in both Germany and the U.S. and I use this to target them to an Irish audience. It works very well and I don't need a ccTLD to do it. (Although there are other advantages to a ccTLD anyway).

I'd imagine it'll work to target Australia too.

      Worth a try.

      Tommy.

I think you can access it with the same details. Just google "webmaster tools" and it'll be the first result. Then try logging in with whatever details you log into your adsense or analytics account. I think they all use the same logins but don't show up in your account until after the first time you go into them and add you details. (It's been a long time since I;ve done it so I'm a bit fuzzy on the exact sequence).

In webmaster tools, you can also tell Google where your site map is. Very handy for new sites (because you'll see the little Google bot turning up at your site in no time).

      Tommy.

    Danny,

The honest answer is that it depends on what you are searching on. .com.au's will certainly show up as will .com's. You can host an .au in the USA - there are no issues. However registering the domain is an entirely different matter. If you are an Aussie its no problem - you will need to follow the Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules published here: auDA > auDA Published Policies > Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules for the Open 2LDs (2008-05)

    Hope this helps.
