Vbulletin: Dying a slow death?

vBulletin hasn't been the same since Jelsoft sold out to Internet Brands. Now I see SitePoint has jumped ship and moved over to Discourse.

vBulletin seems to work pretty good for WF, however it's an older version.

I have a site running version 4.2, but don't see myself ever updating to version 5 based on the reviews I've read and probably won't use vBulletin for any future sites either unless something major changes.

Their problem is you can buy a company but not the people. They may have the name, but the core coders moved on to their own project. The software seems to have lost its way following that.

I think a lot of big sites are generally happy still running version 3. Some have opted to move on to 4. I have yet to hear anything positive about 5.

I've used vbulletin in the past and the thing that annoyed me most was that is definitely not set and forget. They are forever releasing new security patches and updates and it becomes quite a pain having to do those updates all the time. That's the problem when you use a platform that is so popular. Many people try to target it's security flaws and so they are fighting a never ending battle.

I still personally like vbb the best of all forum software I have seen.
But I guess time will tell if they can keep it up

As far as I know, 2 of the team members who created vBulleting and worked on it, left vBulletin and started a new forum software "XenForo" which is popular now and many large vBulletin communities switched to XenForo. There was a law suit between XenForo and Internet Brands which lasted for years, but they settle their case last year.

vBulletin still provides the best forum software I think. I agree though it's not as good as it used to be. Many forums seem to get less traffic than they used to though, as more people moved to social media.

I have been running vBulletin for a long time, and yes, keeping up with the security updates, and template update conflicts are among the not-so-fond memories. For future sites, both IPB and XenForo look interesting to me.

As others have pointed out, activity has been shifting toward social media, blog and guide oriented sites in the past years.
