Forgive me if i sound like a know it all, im not. But heres my take.

This is a hunt, the target audience is your prey, if you want to catch your prey you must learn to think like it. Where does it sleep what does it eat what is it afraid of what does it want? So who is your prey?
People who want to quit smoking.. lets become that.

Ive been smoking for 4 years and now i want to quit, how do i do that? Ok ill start by triyng to google " how to quit smoking" Targeted google ads?

I hear alot of people talk about this book by Alan Car, ill try googling that to find a free ebook of that, distribute ads inside free copies of similar material?

Ill try reading articles, write up a blog about trying to quit smoking? Write articles or find similar articles?

Ill like facebook groups that talk about quiting or making funny smoker memes, try and post there?

Sorry it was a quick post but the steak is on the grill

Hope it gives you a start

Having done some research in both markets I would suggest e-cigs over quit smoking. E-cigs are freakin booming right now. People who want to quit smoking might, but e-cig buyers will become repeat customers for life.

Also, there is a ton of free resources for people who want to quit. The state of Minnesota has a tv ad campaign offering incentives to people who make use of their free quit program.

I can vouch for e-cigs. I push them with media buys.

Stilliwander gave you a super answer; both the information and the process of getting into the mind of your target audience. Love it.

Places where your Quit Smoking audience will hang out:

    - Social Network Groups and/ Communities
    - Forums
    - Newsgroups
    - Blog Comments
    - Facebook Profiles

Decent Paid Search Traffic for this:

    - Adwords & Bing Ads
    - FB

Just waking up here. The above will help. When my partner began using e-cigs, and I saw the fantastic results, I added them to my "push list." It's a good market.

I also agree e-cigs is a profitable product.
I think a lot of people who are trying to quit smoking are on forums. There are a lot of forums for that . Using forums is great way to expose your product to a targeted market.

You can also contact people who have websites or newsletter on quit smoking and run a banner ad on a website on solo ad in their newsletter.

    Then there are Facebook groups.
    Blog comments
    Google groups / yahoo groups

Look for people that have a REASON to quit. For example, if they have major health problems because quitting could literally save their lives.

However, also young people before they get too addicted.

That is just two segments of the population.

If you are trying to find out where your audience is hanging out, try a software called buzzbundle.

What it does is it takes you keywords "stop smoking" or 'e-cigarettes' and then starts monitoring over a wide range of social platforms (you can specify) where the conversation is taking place.

It then conveniently keeps you logged into those platforms so you can interact and contribute.

Every time there is new questions being asked, new topics or new conversations taking place, then it lets you know and archives it for you so you can jump in on the conversation.

check it out, it should show you at the very least where your audience is hanging out.

Tis is a great idea. It actually makes me think of Google alerts. You'll be alerted whenever there's content on the web about the target keywords you've chosen.

The most obvious target would be those who already want to quit smoking but another may be those who 'need' to quit smoking.

  • you can use re-targeting to find your audience. What re-targeting does is that if a person reads an article on smoking and then goes to say their yahoo mail you can serve them an ad in their email.

First of all, forgive me if i sound likeknowing it all, i'm not. I also new.

But from my opinion, I think (my personal thought) you then need to narrow down your audience even further. I know you want to market your quit smoking program and it really interesting niche, but it always better to promote to small laser targeted audience rather to market to all people.

The more specific and narrow you target, the better you can talk, promote and connect directly with that audience. Speak directly to that only ONE GROUP of people.

For an instant, you can narrow down your potential buyer to "man who are busy working with baby"

Once you can identified your targeted audience, then you can easily find specific group in any social media or platforms to promote your great program.

      Just my thoughts.

Groups named "quit smoking" on facebook
or target "quit smoking" fanpages on facebook ads
or try smoking related consequences like, "bad skin for smoking" or "bad blood pressure" and stuff like that as keywords for a blog or for ppc

My dad smoked for years. If your product was available years ago, my mom would have been MUCH MORE of a target than my dad.

    Think out of the box.

so, whats your plan for these people after they quit smoking? Whats your upsell to these people or do you expect to lose them once you save their life?

I think your target market is too narrow, Out of the 75 years or so people live your target market is at ONE 1-6 month point in their life when they are actually serious about quitting smoking.. enough to buy your product.. enough to actually quit.

Your target is very narrow, and what value are you going to bring them that isn't already available for FREE out there.

What about family members who have other family members who smoke and they want them to stop.
What about people who have already stopped smoking..

What about Coaching? People pay good money to have someone tell them "Get up and go work out today" (personal trainer)

What about creating an accountability product that calls the members frequently and just reminds them that smoking isn't worth it....

    IDK.. just tired and brainstorming.

    Thanks!

    Jeremiah

Google has all the targeted audience you'll ever want. You can either rank your site for related keywords, or run an adwords campaign, if its within your budget.

Other than that, forums are goldmines. Build up your reputation on the forums, and promote your product in your signature. Sales won't happen overnight, but they definitely will.
