So My Sister In Law Sent $20 To Learn How To Make Money.

I thought , I would share this story with you guys.

So my sister in law, who is on her mid 30s was telling me how few years back ( long time ago ) she saw an ad on a newspaper on a guide on how to make money from home.. but the person wanted them to send $20 , and he was going to teach her how to make money sitting at home! ( This scenario might remind you of some WSOs we have on our community )

Then she sent 20$ thinking it was very small amount.... ( Remember the $7 WSO ) and it was a drop in a bucket! and she got a letter back saying.

" Do what i did"

It totally reminded me of online marketing products.

I was born in 91, but i don't really remember seeing these kind of stuff on newspaper too much.. but i know we have some old trees in the community who might want to enlighten us on this topic.

I have to say, The copy must be GREAT to convince person to MAIL 20$ lol

I'm quite sure that's illegal and it's not representative of "online marketing products" since even those multi-level affiliate structutes that involve "selling the sell" have some sort of actual product associated with them.

I'd hope your association then isn't a consequence of a negative experience....

There are companies who obtain information when people sign up for a free magazine or something similar.

Other people buy this information, and mail out various work at home opportunities - some are for silly things like "sit at home and stuff envelopes."

They usually require the person to pay some more money for the supplies.

It's not uncommon - and I don't believe it is illegal.

I've spotted these things in my own mail box, and know to just trash them.

Promotion of stuffing envelopes isn't illegal.

Selling nothing to sell selling is another matter...

Many years ago my young sister-in-law responded to an ad in the paper about "earn money working at home". Turned out to be a local manufacturer who at the time hired people to use a machine to stamp out a special small gasket the company used in its products.

She may have responded to the only REAL ad out there. The company provided the small stamping machine and the raw materials and there were no costs to her. For several years she spent 3-4 hrs a day at home making these small gaskets and once a week delivered them to the company and was paid.

It wasn't a lot of money - there was no advancement or cheering squad. Yet she was able to stay home with her children - and pay the mortgaqe with her earnings. Her husband's job paid for the rest of their expenses.

I've wondered if there are any jobs like that today - they've probably been regulated or automated out of existence.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

In the USA, you can thank OSHA* and the PI** Legal community for putting those jobs out of business.

There are still some legit work-at-home jobs, but most of them involve customer service and support functions that can be performed online or via telephone with little risk of injury.

Not necessarily the same, but I would put that in the same boat as a MLM or Ponzi Scheme.

Like a chain letter. You slide my Name up one and put your Name at bottom and then do what I did and mail to 1,000 prospects.

Funny, I did one back in 1991 called "The Happy Birthday Club" . Tried to get around the Postal Laws by sending $5 to 5 people on List telling them this was a birthday gift.

Me and my brother made a few hundred bucks.

But it was a waste of time overall. And illegal at that.

P.S. There are a few select WSO that can really teach you how to make money online. For less than $20.

Years ago a friend of mine had an idea to make easy money through mail order.

The (hypothetical) ad read: Solve All Your Drug And Alcohol Problems Forever, Guaranteed! Just $10!

The product? A piece of paper with the words: Don't drink or do drugs.

If followed exactly, the method will work 100% of the time, so...

Hahaha.... Brent, your friend is quite correct.

      It is funny though.

20-25 years ago I got caught up in the scheme where I received money and had to send some of it via Western Union to some European country but I kept the rest.

I think I made about $1000 before I was contacted by the bank and asked what was happening.
They didn't want to do anything to me as they knew it was a scam but they wanted my help to trap the people responsible. I gave them everything I had and I have no idea what happened after that.

Wow you were lucky! I have a friend (Caribbean country) who taught high school
and had a thriving tutoring business. He received an offer from an American
businessman who wanted to fund his tutoring service by sending postal money orders, ask him to cash them and SEND BACK 20% in cash to the sender!

Unfortunately, he fell for the scheme and was given a 5 years prison sentence. He
pleaded ignorance but the judge said that he should have been smarter as a teacher
than thinking anyone would send you checks to cash and ask for a percentage back.

(Well, only God comes close with the tithing system. But He asks you to work
      for the money.)

In School. I started a "Secret" which only a few people knew about and in order to know the "Secret" you need to buy us food. Once they paid, they get to know the secret which was "There is no secret"..
They then became apart of the group and it got HUGE. No one believed any honest person who said "There is no secret, don't waste your money"

    Results?

Detention + suspended for tricking other students to buying food.

Sometimes we have to learn the hard way; but at least that makes us remember the life lessons! There's a notable difference between investing in your own business and investing in someone else's business. I made the mistake once. First time you fool me, shame on you. Second time you fool me, shame on me! The lesson learned? Never pay money to work for someone else. The comical thing about the companies that ask unsuspecting dreamers to pay for supplies is simply this: you can buy supplies and assemble things at home without a middle man. Many people market their own homemade products on the internet. All the money they spend is an investment in their own business.

      Shane,

      Spam is not allowed here.

And not too long ago, there was a huge thread about one MOBE member's experience. It wasn't good. Matt Lloyd had refused to refund her until/unless she took down her posts detailing her experiences with MOBE here, which is ILLEGAL. Matt doesn't have a good reputation here and I'd be wary of admitting I'm affiliated with him.
