If I just want to put up a blog I will use freehostia.com which is a free hosting site. It works awesome and doesn't cost a dime. Has all the features of the big boys.

the baby package is 9.95 under hosting, not under reseller hosting, and if you use coupon code wordpress, or david you get first month for a penny.

HostGator and I think it's 9.95 with unlimited domains. They have a 3.95 package. Very fast support.
The only thing I don't like is I can't figure out a way to have 'my tech' people access a single web site at a time.

I use another as well but they are more expensive. The negative there is the version of scripts they use are not always the newest. But they are still good otherwise.

I've used lots over the years, most important characteristic for me? Support, price, and unlimited domains! Lots of features are standard now that you use to have to pay extra for.

I also use HostGator quite a bit for my different niche sites across different IPs. Also for domains that I plan on flipping, I use the reseller account. I actually pay a couple hundred dollars a month for hosting, but that is because I have things spread out across different IPs. But, the average basic account is $9.95, and the reseller account is $25/mo

I think we pay about $150 a month at Server Beach for our dedicated box. Something in that vicinity; I don't pay attention to the details.

Look at the top of the page of the submenu for 'web hosting' and the next page shows the 'baby' package, 'hatchling' etc.. Baby lists as 7.95 today.

apples and oranges - you're looking at it from only your perspective. managed hosting can be brilliant for newbs and such. i believe you don't need much contact w/ your host whereas someone else might need help installing a script - that's where managed hosting (in its many forms) comes into play.

Ouch, bad karma. As soon as I said that, a hard drive crashed and I had to open a ticket at the host to have it swapped into a live server so I could get the data off it.

Good to know Softlayer has senior technicians on 10 minute call at 2AM on a holiday weekend. They even gave me tips for recovering damaged file systems.

I was on Media Temple (mt) Grid Service at $20/month and it went down two weekends in a row a while back, after having repeated slow downs/near crashes.

I finally switched to Mosso's Cloud Server for $100/month, and I have been very happy there. It's more expensive, yes, but I lost far more than the difference when Media Temple went down.

And I don't resell either one. Just my experience for my own sites.

Hmm... Is this some sort of survey?

Anyway, I build Adsense sites and either keep the more profitable ones or flipped them. I used to pay about $15 per month for a reseller account with JaguarPC.com. But, last month, I got a reseller account with Hostgator.com. Its the cheapest plan ($24.95) they have, but as I got it during their promotion (75% Off), I go for the annual payment and the bill ends up as only $74.85 per annum for the first year.

SEO Hosting - C-Class IP addresses. Not a big deal if you've only got a few sites, but if you are building a network of sites, SEO Hosting is the way to go in my mind.

$40 bucks will get you 20 GB of disk space, 200GB of bandwidth and you'll have the opportunity to host unlimited sites. The base price is $35 a month, but the extra $5 will get you 5 dedicated IP addresses as well.

If you use the coupon 35off, you'll get the first 30 days for 1 cent.

They are owned / operated by Hostgator - service & support is outstanding, or at least it has been for me.

Probably for the same reason why I have 2 dedicated servers from hostgator... Yes it is unlimited domains but it is not unlimited resources as no server has unlimited resources. The bull that you see hosting companies advertise about "unlimited bandwidth" is false. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth because someone must pay for that overage that you use, you think the hosting company is going to pay for it ???

I have well over 500 sites installed and over 500 mysql databases + I also host some clients sites.

That is so true, I fell into that in the beginning too. And yes, its BS...if you have a big spike of traffic they will still email you or suspend your account for some time, it happend to me personally.

    OK. I've used...

Dreamhost Shared Hosting Ok for beginners... Dreamhost VPS Great for less popular sites, and recently quite stable. I like the extra power. $15.00 pm plus hosting.

BlueFur Decent Hosting but Poor Service: Even their sales is poor for contacting you. Dunno how they stay in business. Who cares?

bluehost.com Went down at Christmas on my server after some kind of problems... But good speed, friendly staff, and good prices. $7.95 pm.

hostmonster same company as above. Better deal. $4.95 for one client.

Recently, I have been using MediaTemple for one client. Easy to set up, and good panel. It's $16pm (if you use a coupon)... easily as good as DH VPS.

I also manage all my domains on NameCheap now. That's my first mistake. So I can switch sites to better hosts within a few hours at least.

So I guess it totals about $50pm for a variety of services. I do resell hosting, but using a variety of hosting companies means I can weed out the worst services and switch clients to better deals. So my clients tend to host with 'me' not with any particular hosting company.

I use Hawkhost's basic reseller plan. $10.95 a month and with discounts for annual payments and a 25% off coupon it dropped the cost to $6.50 a month.

20 cpanel accounts, 1.5 gigs disk, 15 gigs bandwidth. I figured I can always upgrade if and when I get this thing off the ground. I also have my names registered elsewhere so I can move the site if need be.

It's interesting to see that a lot of people here use Hostgator. I use their $9.95 a month unlimited hosting plan which gives me everything I need. I used to host with Easyspace - too expensive and then godaddy. I found godaddy difficult to use and after watching a Mike Filsaime video where he told of his nightmare experience with them decided to move hosts. I can't remember exactly where I was told of Hostgator but have found them to be excellent in every way particularly support.

And no I don't work for them!

    Cheers

For one of my hosting accounts I am using Rackspace...it costs a little over $100 a month.

Now, before anyone starts flinging torches......I found out the hard way on probably 3 different occasions, that when you "stress" some of these cheaper hosting services...especially at the wrong time of day...they crash. (With the most recent crash, I lost the equivalent of 10 years of "hosting fees" just from all the lost orders when the server went down...and the lost subscribers who emailed me and unsubscribed. )

I've used Hostgator, Hostnexus, 1&1, and at least a couple of others...

Thankfully, I have yet to be able to take down the Rackspace Cloud (formerly called Mosso)...

      (fingers crossed)

Currently, I'm paying a bit under $100/month for one server, and I have a dev server locally here I use for some things. Will probably be expanding to a second server in 2010, or possibly looking at amazon ec2 option, though a lower-end dedicated may still come out cheaper, given the bandwidth I push on some sites.
