How did you find your niche?

I was just wondering if everybody could tell me how they got started with their current niche? Were you able to make sales quickly when you started or did you take your time and finally master what you are doing?

    1. Go to Yahoo/Answers and related forums to get an idea if people are much involved asking questions related to the niche you are seeking for. This is how I used to get a fair idea about my niche.

    2. Contact websites related to your niche who already have a list and ask them if their market would be interested in a FREE REPORT (without any purpose of marketing) or YOUR GUEST POST .. If they reply you back with interest, you will get an idea about your niche.

    3. The niche can be drilled down brainstorming the ideas. Take your time and spend some in relative forums and try to start POLL over there to figure out the drilled down ideas related to your niche.

    4. At last go and check Google Ads continuously in search engine related to your Niche for at least 3-7 days. And check if you have some advertisers coming up their constantly. This will give you an idea about your niche.

    5. Discovering an unknown niche (to be known to a very few), you have to get offline ideas by brainstorming the general public. Like in my city, a guy brainstormed ideas and started "Home Delivery Beauty Parlour Service" for woman. It is going great!

    Accidentally?
I've been a Korean drama addict since 2007 and have watched hundreds of them. Recently, I decided to create a blog all about Korean dramas and put some Amazon ads... It is selling pretty well. I think that's how I found my latest niche.

Choosing a niche is not a decision made in isolation. For me, I couldn't choose a niche until I chose a business model.

The way you choose a niche is different for everyone and in my case, the path was VERY circuitous. But essentially, the process was:

A few years ago, "offline marketing" was the craze around here: that is, using your online marketing skills to help offline, bricks-and-mortar businesses increase their business. I LOVED that idea and decided to run with it.

However, I didn't want to help just any business in my local area. There are just some businesses I didn't want to work with and didn't feel I'd do well with. Helping a plumber holds zero interest for me, for example. I also didn't want to be running off to in-person meetings. I have some mobility issues and really want to stay home and work virtually.

So instead of specializing in local businesses, I decided to specialize by industry. I'd previously done copywriting and landed mostly health and wellness professionals as clients. I liked working with them and they needed A LOT of help. They're typically not business-oriented at all and mistakenly think that having the right degree or certification will guarantee a successful business.

Through copywriting, I also discovered I did NOT want to have a service-based business. I wanted more freedom than that.

Eventually, after a lot MORE research, I decided to create a trade association, a very traditional business model. Industry trade associations are typically focused on industry trends, events, lobbying, industry politics, etc. They're typically NOT business-oriented. That is, they're typically not focused on helping members grow their businesses (marketing).

So that's what my trade association does: helps members grow their practices. By definition, our members are entrepreneurs.

Instead of DOING local marketing, or offering other services like copywriting for people, I sell memberships and information products and do events for our members. I'm also going to be publishing an anthology in the the coming year, a book where members each contribute a chapter. (My own first book was published in 2010, so I have experience with this.)

If I choose to do services, like consulting, etc. it's at a much higher price point than I might be able to do otherwise. Services are at the BOTTOM of my funnel and cost the most. I rarely meet anyone in person, which I love.

I sort of chose my niche and business model at the same time. They go hand in hand. I specifically chose health and wellness professionals because 1) they aren't typically business-oriented and need A LOT of help and 2) I'm not selling marketing info/services to other IMers or other marketers selling marketing info/services. I DESPISE the incestuous nature of that and wanted to avoid it -- a BIG reason why I chose health and wellness professionals.

If you're trying to choose a niche, it might help to also focus on your business model. for example, do you want to offer services or products? Do you want to sell physical products (e-commerce) or information products (e-books, courses, etc.)?

While you think about that, think about your hobbies and interests. What are your interests? What skills and knowledge do you already have?

DON'T just think about what you think might make the most money. That's the wrong way to go about it. Money alone will not sustain a career. You need to have interest, skills and passion for what you do.

      Hope that helps!

My interest and passion on a certain thing always comes first before my niche.

In the last couple of years, I started metal detecting but I didn't saw it as a good niche at first. After two years of gaining vast experience in metal detecting, I created a site based on my own experience and boom, it also sells well with Amazon.

I can tell everything about metal detectors factually and I think this is the main reason why my pages ranks above other review sites created by people who writes review just for money without even experiencing to hold a real metal detector..

Even if you break your head analyzing and thinking a good niche a hundred times, it will be a failure if you don't have any interest in it. Even the niche is small or not really marketable, if you have enough knowledge with it, you can do everything.

How many warriorforum members are watching Korean drama? maybe less than 1% or not even 0.5%. Is it a good niche? For most Imer's it is not. But since I have tremendous knowledge about it, My Amazon account says otherwise. There are hundreds of people who reaches Amazon site daily through my Korean drama site and these people are not buying Korean Drama CDs alone, but products from cotton buds, tissue paper, lawn movers, and everything.

Don't break your head thinking of "the most profitable niche" because there is nothing like that. Think of your interests, hobbies, and everything you like and turn it into profit. Create your own niche instead of thinking other niches that might already have been saturated.

This is a great question. But I also think it's the wrong question.

In my experience, finding a niche is not the first step to starting a successful business. Finding a need is.

My background is in web development, so I'm constantly thinking of new websites that I wish existed or new web applications that I think other people would want to use. For me, coming up with a new business idea is as easy as completing the sentence, "Wouldn't it be great if there was a website that ..." These ideas can -- and do -- cut across just about any niche you can think of.

For an example in a completely different area, read Nightengale's very informative post above. She saw that that health professionals had a need for business and marketing support. She recognized something about them that they might not have even known about themselves: they are entrepreneurs and not just health care providers.

But of course the idea is the easy part. It's the execution that matters. Nightengale designed and implemented what sounds like a pretty cool solution (a marketing-focused trade association) to her customers' very real problem. Just as I eventually, picked a single idea that I was passionate about and developed a site that is genuinely useful to my users.

If your question was how to find a niche, then my answer would be... proper keyword research. Judging by your custom user title ("KING OF KEYWORDS"), I'd say you probably agree.

In general people overcomplicate niche research. Simply starting with a main topic like "weight loss" or "dog training" (typical examples) is all you need to yield many niche ideas if you do keyword research right.

Some say focus on your passion, which can be very helpful, though I've found that most people who focus on their passion end up with a hobby, not a business. I say, as it's already been said in this thread, focus on profit potential by meeting a need.

It just so happens that keyword research is not only the method to find a niche but it is the actual niche I chose. I sell keyword research services and training. Am I passionate about keyword research? Not necessarily, though I am passionate about the benefits it brings. And it does certainly help meet a large need. But passionate? I'm passionate about the results, but if the results weren't there I wouldn't be researching keywords for fun.

I see what you mean & agree that keywords are the best way to get free targeted traffic from Google. Think it is cool that some of them get hundreds of thousands of searches a month. If this isn't potential to make money online, I don't know what is. Been using YouTube to promote my site & was number 4 or 5 on the 1st page of results & hoping once I get number 1 that I will show up on the 1st page of Google for videos. Once I make my 1st $100 payout I was going to invest in my own SEO & work on making an awesome blog with professional articles & related Amazon ads.

I had always been successful with other niches, so i figured i'd enter into "internet marketing" with my diverse background, and make a business out of it. I knew the pre-existing concerns regarding this niche, and i know how to market anything online, so i just did it. It's just another niche to me.

To be quite honest, i'm young and i'm looking to chill everyday... so i created a series of digital products that would help me to achieve my desired lifestyle. This niche allowed me to do this - easily.

This is a good old advice but I can't agree with you because there are loads of niches you will find wherein no passion or hobby is required i.e. woolen gloves or mechanical pencils. I neither have passion to wear woolen gloves living in hot climate nor do I love to write with mechanical pencil. But, there is a great earning potential lying ahead in the above mentioned unexplored niches.

Should I leave them? Because I don't have any passion in those niches. What do you say?

Remember, when you start a blog and money starts to roll in, it will become your passion. Another thing to note that not every marketer writes the content for their blogs. What they do? They hire content writers, so your theory completely goes wrong.

I would say find opportunity in niches. As for the OP, Amazon is a goldmine of niches. Just spend one hour or so, you will be amazed by the plethora of niches.

I found my niche by researching supply and demand as well as taking into consideration my own interest so it was easier for me to provide my own self to my content and marketing efforts.

As far as making money goes there are dozens of different ways to leverage the Internet and make money. Everything is about testing, testing, optimizing and testing some more and you just keep repeating the process and try and find your "sweet spot"

Physical products I am discovering are much easier to make sales with. Commissions can be smaller unless your able to mark up your own prices rather than a commission basis. It's easier for somebody to put a emotional feeling to a something they can see, feel and touch and its much easier to sell that way. Capture that in your marketing efforts an its a home run usually...

True. Most people want something that can benefit them when they are offline. Looking into selling on eBay again & making a blog for Amazon ads.

There are many ways to find your niche. It just depends on how imaginative you're.
You can use keyword tools, your passions, shopping sites like amazon, observing current trends, etc.

You can also read popular blogs on this topic like nichehacks.com. Can inspire you when looking for a niche.

Finding a good niche take work , but you want to concentrate on areas that have high searches on the general broad niche, and then drill down to sub niches in the category that have good search volume.

You need a fixed point to start your search. Finding a niche on a vacuum will be a daunting task.
By fixed point I mean a constant for starting your research and then take it from there.
    Example:
    *Start with the audience
    *Start with the market
    *Start with the idea
It is not a linear process and can't be summarised in "follow your passion" or "go for keywords with lots of searches". This could become frustrating because your passion might have zero commercial value, or the popular niches could be so uninteresting to you that become a mental drain. You can PM me and I'll help you generate ideas and see how viable they are.

Good points. If you can make money with your niche, it keeps you from getting burned out.

You can start off with something you like or know about provided there are people who shared your passion or needed your solution and willing to spend money.

Otherwise, you may just head down to Clickbank and sort out the products gravity from 6 to 26 under the Marketplace section. This is what I learnt from Mark Ling in his AffiloBlueprint course.

You can also go to Amazon and picked out the best sellers and see if you can build a site based on those and drive traffic.

    Hey there!

This questions is asked alot around these parts. The thing is that there are literally thousands of ways to discover "niches" "sub niches" "extremely targeted micro niches" the challenge is gauging the profitability, competition and coming up with a unique and exciting angle in the niche to set you apart.

I am in several VERY profitable niches and before I build any type of PBN or money sites there is a formula I use. With any new niche website that I create 90 percent of the time it is profitable within 4 - 7 days. Sometimes within the fist day!

Every niche is different as far as traffic and Monetization.. so you just have to test, tweak and keep doing more if whats working for you.

The Niche is so hard to achieve especially when you come from a community of administrators. To find a niche means you must be able to think and see creatively and that is often not a very common human trait. None the less I have suffered at the hand of "nichelessness" for some time until I have discovered my own sense of where I should invest my time and money and that is in penny stocks and shares. I tried amazon and ebay drop shipping and it didn't work for me, so I moved on. I tried SFI affiliate program and that didn't work either and I was getting frustrated, then I found a nice synthetic trading platform which I currently use to earn. Therefore, use all your senses about what you like and what makes you tick, because what ever you choose, you must be able to take it to the next level, no matter what the market may look like you will play an integral success in making your niche profitable. So my nicheness came out of desperation to find a secondary income and to achieve the dream that everyone wants and that is to be a little less worried.

Sometimes I follow the money, sometimes I follow my interests - if there is money in it.

Everytime though i make sure there is money to be made.

I found mine by looking at my own weaknesses/problems, strengthening them then helping others strengthen theirs. As I knew I sure was not the only one who had those weaknesses/problems.
