Is Twitter Really That Useful?

I noticed today John Reese made a twitter post saying he is considering no longer using twitter. I've also noticed that some of the other big name gurus are no longer make as many twitter posts as they had been. I'm wondering if twitter is just a bunch of hype and more money is really made selling courses on how to use it and helping people get thousands of "friends" than anything else.

Myself I have 1,000 so called twitter "friends". When I put out a post on one of my blogs I email my list, send a post on facebook, and on twitter. Twitter gives me the least amount of traffic according to google analytics. Like I'll get 2 people or something. Whereas everything else gives me good results.

Facebook now is pretty much like twitter when you log in with the status updates and you have more control over it and is less spammy. Makes me wonder if twitter is just a fad that is dying out.

I've never really got twitter. But I guess I don't use it to it's full potential.

Recently I sent out a tweet to my huge 700 followers saying 'does anyone even read my tweets?' and I got one reply.

Perhaps someone who uses it correctly such as Dana will reply with some thoughts though.

You're probably forgetting the fact that:

Not everyone is online when you tweet - but that doesn't mean they won't read it.

Tweeters are all over the world and when you post you may be in the wrong time zone for a lot of your followers to read your message at that time.

If you're genuinely interacting with people - you'll know when are the best times to tweet for your particular followers.

I always get a bunch of responses when I ask if anyone is reading - because I do it sometimes when I'm showing people how it works.

Twitter is what you make of it. It's a community - if you abuse it or don't give consideration to the followers being actual people and you'll get crap results.

I've used twitter for some time, and yes you can get traffic from your "tweet". The issue is that if you have a large number of followers, they're all "tweeting", therefore it can mean your tweet is lost very quickly. I guess if you can have a focused set of followers, this would be good as they'll all be tweeting about topics you're interested in. I don't think it compares to something like this Forum. The topics people discuss are so random.

It's good for getting the odd extra backlink - I use Twitterbar so it's literally one click. Also, if you do a search on Twitter for your keywords and then reply to some of those tweets, you should get a bit of targeted traffic. I find that I have to ration my time looking at Twitter, in the same way that I can get distracted trawling through hundreds of email messages,

      cheers,

Yeah it seems to be completely over saturated with people pushing one product or another. People get less value out of your tweets if all you post is affiliate links. They are more responsive if you actually make posts about your current status, instead of posting links every 30 seconds.

A tweet? One tweet is never enough to get a good sampling. If you want to test response, you need to retweet your "call to action" a few times throughout the day, at different times.

Most people don't go back and read the tweets they missed when they weren't logged in. So, in order to reach people, you have to try to get them while they're on.

Originally Posted by beearcade View Post

It's the same as anywhere else. You have to give them a compelling reason to click.

One thing that just doesn't do it is a tweet like this:

      "Check this out! http://..."

Why should I check it out? Why should I click your link out of all the others showing up in my tweet stream?

Wording is very, very important too. A difference in wording can make the difference between a high click-thru rate and a low one. The challenge is getting both your link and compelling copy to fit in 140 characters!

And, be sure to retweet at different times of the day.

You can also do testing, changing the wording around and seeing what gets better results. With testing, you can find out what works best for your followers as far as getting traffic from them.

Twitter works well for your business if you
    focus on a specific niche.

Once you target your niche, you are only
tweeting to them about things THEY are
    interested in.

The key is community and contribution just
    like on a forum.

I find lots of work on Twitter just by being
specific...people often tweet that they are
looking to hire people for certain jobs because
they feel like those they are following and who
follow them would be a good fit for the job.

And, when you do it right...people will ask
YOU for more information about something
you've said and that's how the sales start
    to flow in.

    You just gotta work it.

Like everything in the internet..you have to be patient and give it time..

Build your followers and establish relationships..

Give your tweets compelling wording...make it enticing..

There are millions of people on twitter..an advertising company states in their main page that their publisher's followers are about 20 million in all..

Though it is true that due to the volume of messages, only a few people will notice if you send one message..But try sending the same message the whole day and you'll see the real power of twitter..

..ohh man, me and my big mouth :-)

    OMG!!!

You can make all these assumptions just because one marketer says he's not going to use it anymore?

I love Twitter - I've made a ton of money using it and it's still part of my regular strategies.

The problem most IMers have with Twitter is that they're looking for an angle to make money from it and it's fundamentally used for social interactions by most users.

If you join it in order to send a stream of links out hoping to make money -don't bother. You can make money like that but it's not very efficient.

The reason I love Twitter - and the reason I have made good money using it is because I like interacting with people and I care about people, so I already get a benefit from using it regardless of how I monetise it.

It's easy to make money using Twitter if you actually give a crap about the other people on there. Join it to try and make money from them and you'll probably stop soon.

Who really gives a crap whether John Reese is using it or not? What's that got to do with you and your business and what value it has to you?

John's an interesting guy and if you like to hear what he has to say - fine, but don't base your own decisions on copying what he's doing or not doing.

I get almost all of my press release clients from Twitter, and this continues to be true, so I don't see Twitter dying out any time soon.

As to whether it can be useful - that depends on what you are selling and how you are selling it.

For Twitter to work, you have to be willing to be on there regularly, interacting, Tweeting about your products and services, etc. As in, several times a day. Twitter works really well but it has a short memory; any day that you're not tweeting, you're not driving traffic and business to your website.

I don't think Twitter is useful for selling affiliate products, honestly. I think it's better for promoting yourself, your products, your services.

I jumped into Twitter with both feet about a year ago, and invested more and more time and money in using it as a way to drive traffic to my site and ultimately sell my ebook (which is about dealing with a hostile work environment). I learned two things:

        1) Twitter works great for convincing people that you are a real person, and not a faceless internet huckster. Some of my most popular tweets (I track how often people re-tweet my posts) are about funny things my kids say and do, and oddly (to me) what movie I'm about to watch or what restaurant I'm eating at. Also, anything hinting at partying and nudity seems to go over huge. Unfortunately there's not a lot of either one in my life. So, Twitter helps people see that I'm a real guy with a life. But don't spend money on Twitter until you read the next point.

        2) I was encouraged by the responses I was getting from my tweeting, but frustrated by the amount of time it was taking. Also, a number of guru types -- namely Guy Kawasaki -- say Twitter is all about sharing links. So I hired a VA at $400/month to find 12 good links per day that relate to my topic (work atmosphere, layoffs, getting jobs, suing your company) and post them twice each, once in the am once in the pm. She does a great job writing teasers to get people curious about the links. And she does a good job and getting people to retweet them, so other peoples' followers and not just my own see my tweets. Well despite all that effort and cost, I've had one confirmed sale that came from Twitter. It was a $97 sale. I've paid my VA $1,200 over the last three months.

Let me add, that I also had my VA using Tweet Deck to find people who were Tweeting about how they hated their job or boss. I would then follow them, hoping to get them to follow me back and see my material that would help them solve their problem. I got some people to my site this way, but again, it was a trickle, and only a few droplets actually purchased anything.

        Conclusion:
Twitter works as a social forum, to show people your social side and be "a real person" to them. It can generate a bit of traffic via links, but it's not traffic that is motivated to make a purchase because they need help with a problem. I'm stopping the VA's work on posting links to articles and videos, and going instead with just pure social tweets by me that I can do on the fly. If I had to do it again I'd take the $1,200 I spent on the VA and go buy myself a stereo for my office.

Hope this helps those of you wondering what to do with Twitter.

Interesting perspective - thanks for sharing that detail.

I sell a lot of high end software so the $1200 for one sale would be excellent ROI for me, but the relationships are what I really love about Twitter - I just also make money too but I don't focus on that so I can see why your model doesn't work for you.

Why not do a twist on your marketing strategy with twitter...

If you read Dana's post above, she tells us that it works fine based on her experience...Maybe try consulting warriors here on what's best with twitter..that is if you still want to try..

As for me, all I can say is it works..as of now I'm in the middle of my campaign so I can't mention any details..just try to change your strategy.

With the power of twitter you could be the "Go To" guy when it comes to your niche.

Let me end with something I read before. A guy with more than a million followers says this in his profile "It's like Christmas everyday!"

If you don't like/trust/understand/use Twitter - Then just pass it by and focus on other stuff.

The fact that most IMers build up their followers by following others and hoping they do the same - and then spewing out a ton of quotes and promotional links is the reason it doesn't 'work' for them.

I think that shows exactly what twitter doesn't make a lot of sense to spend a huge effort on attracting potential buyers. I like to interact with people too, but don't acre about trying to talk with faceless people on twitter I don't know. rather interact with people on facebook. I do a lot of email marketing and built my list up to 35,000 people. I rather spend my time trying to think of good content to share then just talk one on one with a few dozen twitter people. I've got it available so people can get on my twitter account if they want and I do send them links to my stuff, but not going to spend a lot of time trying to do all of that. Everyone has something that works best for them and that is what they need to focus on. If its twitter for you then you need to spend time on it, if it is something else than focus on that and don't worry about twitter it won't be a game changer for you.

I'm doing very well with Twitter. The point is, that the tweets you make are not so important. I have automated some things with Twollow, Tweetlater and Twitterfeed.
This way I get many really targeted followers, who often click on the messages from tweetlater.I send them to a viral tweets script, where they get a free report when then retweet a message (part of the viral script) to get to the next site.

I love Twitter, though I use it more for personal reasons than marketing. I keep up to date on legislation and news events. I have about 120 Tweets waiting for me every morning with TwitterFox, I get at least that many more during the day. I scan them all and click many of the links. But I only follow people I am truly interested in. I have unfollowed a few people because most of their Tweets were nothing but promotion. And I am considering dumping 2 more (one is even a Warrior) because they Tweet the same thing every day, sometimes more than once a day.

If you are using it for marketing you really need targeted followers if you want great results. It is no different than with website visitors, 1 targeted buyer is worth far more than 1,000 stumblers.

All of the automated bots getting followers for people is a waste of time. Those followers won't click your links.

Dell recently stated that they had made $3MM in sales from Twitter. Dell Makes $3 Million From Twitter-Related Sales -- PCs Social Networks -- InformationWeek

There are many other big and small companies reporting great results from Twitter. It really depends on who is following you -- get the right followers (targeted to your niche) and you will see results.

    Hi

There is a valid reason why some gurus might feel that Twitter is not a viable or as powerful marketing tool as it used to be.

There are a couple of reasons for this:

    1. Twitter became a shotgun range for links and with SO many people on Twitter, it's difficult to stand out even if you are an established "guru".

    2. Most users don't even LOOK at others Tweets anymore. They simply post and then move on to whatever they were doing before. This includes gurus.

    3. Popular figures like celebs or gurus RARELY interact with other Twitter users. This is the BIGGEST mistake I found. If you do not interact with people, you don't deserve their attention, because you are not adding value. You might as well be labeled a spammer.

The main focus here is relationship building. It is IMPORTANT.
One guru that knows how to Work Twitter is Matt Bacak. He actually replies to Tweets from his followers. As far as IM companies goes, Getresponse and Namecheap are doing a fantastic job on Twitter. No spamming or junk, just relationship building stuff. I love it and will follow them purely because of that.

Most celebs simply don't add any value to Twitter other than "being there".

Interact with people as much as you possibly can and do it often!
You'll find that they later retweet your messages, @ reply you. It's called being friends. Not the fake crap you think you have by simply following a lot of people.

    Cheers ;-)

It depends on how you use it. These days I prefer Facebook since you can really target your efforts--especially in the ads.

I use Twitter mostly to keep up on trends, competitors, and to send blog updates and interesting things my followers might find useful.

Don't spend a lot of time there but I know people who are happy with it and those that are not.

I've done some marketing and have seen over a hundred responses on the right product or service.

Twitter is revolutionary in my mind. But you have to understand that with revolution, you need to adapt.
First off, you need to give added value. If you send spam and promotional stuff all day long, all you're actually doing is teaching your followers to ignore your tweets. So add value in your tweets.
That also means that it's essential for you to target a specific group or your tweets will not add value to everyone of your followers, by design. Get specific, add value and people will really follow what you talk about.
Also, if you're using this as a marketing tool, don't get sucked into using it as a means other than that. If you get sucked in and spend way too much time on it, just hanging out, being unproductive, then of course you won't see any results.
And finally, if you spam either because you don't know any better or because that's what the latest guru taught you, you won't have any followers. Not real ones anyway, that actually want to listen to what you have to say.

If you just want a lot of followers (and I've seen posts on this forum asking people to do just that) you need to ask yourself why? If you want to make money or gain influence, then getting a lot of followers does nothing. It's like the online version of network marketing teaching you to pitch your opportunity to everyone within 3 feet of you. It's spam, it's hard work, you won't get any results and it has nothing to do with marketing.

Add value first, be laser targeted, build relationships. None of this is new. So stop spamming, actually use marketing strategies, plan and work your plan and you will see results with twitter.
Twitter is not the problem. If you ain't seeing results then twitter is only a symptom of your own problem.

    Hi Warriors,

Odd place to find an article on Twitter: An e-mail from RACQ. (RACQ is a car club that helps you if you've broken down).

Anyway, I immediately thought of you guys when I read it. The article says to get real benefit from Twitter you need a program like TweetDeck.

Here's the article that claims you can give search engines the bird, with TweetDeck

When Twittering for profit, you have to remember that it's important that you are Twittering to a targeted market. If your followers are not interested in what you are offering, they won't respond. Maybe you need to open another account and follow people in your niche market. Just a thought.

I use Twitter for learning, not marketing. And, if you follow the right people there is a lot to be learned. I only follow the people that I am interested in learning from. I virtually never follow anybody back that follows me. 99.9% of people on Twitter never have anything to say that I'm interested in reading. But if you find the best, the needle in the hay stack then it's great!

I have learnt some incredible things over the last few weeks.

As for Tweeting and asking if anyone even sees your tweets - I'm not necessarily surprised that not very many people answered. People in general will respond to a tweet that they find interesting, or useful. That particular tweet may just not have been something that people felt that strongly about.

And as has been pointed out - if you have 700 followers - probably only a couple dozen of them, if that, see when you tweet something.

When I am tweeting something that I WANT people to see - like a link to a useful post on my site - here is my formula. Tweet the link, but make it interesting - as in "Here's Why Your Press Release Was Rejected (with a link back to a post on my site)" - and then do at least half a dozen conversational tweets where I am talking to people, asking questions, answering questions...then a couple of hours later I tweet it again...and repeat the process. Tweet my link, then a bunch of tweets where I'm interacting, then repeat.

I drive a few hundred people in a day to my website when I do this.

The reason I do it that way is,

1.) people check in on twitter at different times of the day so I have to tweet repeatedly for maximum exposure, and

2.) I can't Tweet NOTHING but links back to my site or people will get annoyed and unfollow. On Twitter, and any other social networking site, people expect you to interact.

I guess it's because in twitter everyone tries to SELL his own stuffs rather than seek for something. If we want to seek for something, we'd rather use the search engine, wouldn't we?

I get a great deal from twitter whenever i post on my blog i get over 250 hits on my blog and that is a BAD result!

But the big difference is that when i post a special offer they actually buy it - i get more hits on twitter and sales through a special offer on there than i do on here as a wso.

I also tend to get picked up on other peoples blogs as people to follow on twitter which i am sure helps with it.

At the end of the day far too many people dont get twitter and this is probably the problem if they did get it they would be making a lot of money from it. If i was a nobody right now that was starting again online i would use twitter to earn me cash and at the same time i would put my house down as a bet that i could very easily build a list of 2000 subscribers in 30 days on a new twitter account as that is exactly how good it actually is.

Hope that helps you think more clearly about your twitter account.

People may lose focus worrying about how many followers they have, now if thats your thing and you are not using it as a business tool then all well and good. But if not and you are wanting business from it, manage your time and results carefully.

I would agree with many here twitter is good for showing you are a real person, but not so great for direct marketing. I never though of tweeting and not reading and responding to others tweets as spamming before, but that is a good point. Something interesting that just happened I just posted a tweet and it had a link to a new video I made and it was converted to a encrypted url. I thought that was pretty interesting. Looks like the back linking days maybe over on twitter depending on how search engines see the link. Anyone know for sure if this would kill any back link juice?

Our clients and company use Twitter for lots of different reasons: networking a lot, finding good help, local connecting, PR (as in publicity), having fun, sharing jokes, R+R, getting more and new biz, list building, getting and sharing news tips and announcements, etc. Twitter is still a good tool.

Many are right here: just takes some time. If you only go on to blast ads, you probably won't get as much out or your experience there.

    • Jesus christ guys, if you think twitter isn't useful then it's because you don't know what the heck you are doing!!!

Twitter is an incredibly powerful tool but you have to actually know what you are doing for it to be ineffective.

If you go to twitter and follow 3k IM people and you get very little traffic or make very little money, don't be surprised. There are many other ways to make money on twitter other than trying to market to IM'ers.

Check out my twitter thread and you'll see what I mean....

Twitter is very effective, but sometimes you have to think outside the box when using it.

It's great for building social releationships, which many times lead to business relationships, for building brand awareness (even if that brand is yourself), and - far down the list - for direct selling.

Many people are *only* concerned about making direct sales, so they don't see the long-term benefit in Twitter. However, that doesn't mean it's not valuable.

I LOVE Twitter! I don't use it so much to drive traffic to a site, but rather to build relationships. I've gotten clients off of it and have built some very advantageous relationships. I've met people on Twitter that I never would have met otherwise and they have opened a lot of doors for me. I get a lot of referrals from my Twitter friends.

The key is to be genuine and interact with other users. I've found that the people that I show a genuine interest in show a genuine interest in me back and will often do what they can to help out whatever cause I'm promoting.

Twitter is about relationship building, and if you don't have time to do that or care to do that, then it probably is a waste of time. However, if you do want to invest into building those relationships, there is a tight knit community of people in just about every niche on Twitter that are really friendly and eager to help you and the community succeed.

That's what I noticed and made me start this thread. When it comes to internet marketers more of them are making money selling stuff on how to build up "friends" on twitter than actually from twitter itself.

It is the latest in a long line of fads that goes back many years.

At the final analysis IM'ers seem to want to "game the system" to gain some sort of advantage, which is usually very short.

    1. Find a niche - preferably one you are passionate about or at least know.

    2. Build a quality website and keep adding content. Forums if appropriate.

    3. Have a list building strategy in place from day one, and make sure you look after the list over-delivering on quality information, while keeping "offers" to a minimum. The response to offers will be much greater.

    4. Have a long term SEO strategy while understanding this could be a one to three year effort to get big results. After that it is very valuable for traffic.

    5. In the short term use PPC. It is worth focusing hard on perfecting PPC as much as you can.

Best IM strategy in the future? Membership sites.

Treat your IM business like a real business, using your time efficiently. Forget all these fads that come and go - they never last leaving a big hole in your income.

Twitter Rocks and using it properly is where it is at... How many of you are using any of the Twitter apps(Tweetdeck(for RT's and DM), Twollow(target followers/peopl you follow) that can automate your Twitter experience and help you build yourself a targeted community like this forum. It can take a little work, but there is living proof of guys like Perry Belcher, who owes his life to social media like Twitter and it's awesome power when it helped him when he was in dire straits. He and Matt Bacak won F. Kern's Mass Control 2.0 affiliate contest using primarily social media sites like Twitter, Facebook.

I say all this to say DON'T give up on Twitter, Facebook, and social media as a whole. Please remember this whole social media is STILL in it's infancy stages and remember ALL the wealth created when the internet boom itself began. Be a little more patient and do some more due diligence and start channeling some of the power of the internet in your direction.
