Hero Banner Homepages - The end of the slider as we know it

Have you noticed that many of the big sites are moving away from homepage sliders, in favour of single large photos or images?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, just look at the homepages of PayPal or Twitter.
(Just logged into my my PP account and was greeted by an espresso machine!!)

Everybody seems to be doing it, and it's known as the Hero Banner Homepage.

Intention being that you sum up your product/service with a single image that encapsulates the aspirations of your readers, warms them up for a sale and 'makes them feel good'.

The move to Homepage Hero Banners (which is backed up by plenty of research) is that sliders may look good, but they're pretty ineffective when it comes to selling anything.

I've dabbled. In fact I've switched all 4 of my e-commerce sites and already noticed a pick up in sales.

In my case it was pretty easy to choose the picture. 2 of my sites sell hair products and the other 2 a hangover remedy.

But I now want to use this design on my wed-design and service provider sites.

So I'm thinking about the best images to use which encapsulate these businesses and make potential clients stick around.

My question here is what type of Hero Banner Homepage images work best for you? (both as a website owner and an internet surfer...

If anybody's interested I'll be happy to share what may (or indeed may not) be working for me. But I'm very new to this, and really looking to get a conversation started.

For example, photos or graphics, how much text, where to place your call to action the list goes on and on.

You can read what some experts (not me) think of Hero Banner Homepages below;

Any thoughts or contributions?

Yes - this is a new trend.

As you pan down a page, a banner may move/animate too. This is done via HTML 5, previously done by flash.

That's something called Parallax, named after the first theme to offer that scrolling effect.

But you don't need that, you can kep the hero image static - in fact I'm findng that's the best with my e-comm sites.

I think the scrolling thing might look nice, but it kind of does people's heads in, when it comes to selling.

Keep it simple. Big sexy static image, simple call to action off to the bottom right, or bottom centre (still testing)

I have noticed the trend, but to say that it's the end of the slider or any other type of home page is a little premature, IMO. Large home page background images are often very ugly or have no meaning on tiny device screens. And in some types of business web sites, the hero banner doesn't lend itself to the theme or message the owner want's to convey.

IMO, the hero banner certainly has a place . . . but to say it's going to make other home page methods obsolete - I don't believe that.

    Hello.
This new design is really pretty.
I'm still searching the way to apply this on my wordPress theme.
Do somebody knows how to apply a "hero banner" on wordPress?
    Thanks for this thread.

Been using the Divi theme from Elegant, which holds a good hero banner - and allows optional Parallax scrolling.

Not cheap, but I hear you can pick it up on Fiverr

Have you seen the Paypal screen? Bunches of people rapid-fire switching? REALLY irritating, makes me feel like I'm being shouted at and attacked.

This morning I logged into PayPal and was greeted by an espresso machine.
Wonder if they're using 'smart' hero banners, based on recent purchases.

I have noticed this recently. Personally, I prefer a slider on the homepage instead of a single image or a video background. It's a matter of personal choice. This new trend seems great overall, but it will take time for people to get used to it. I'm not sure it works for every niche out there.

I have a couple of clients who have asked about changing their home screen after seeing the new PayPal home page. Personally, I find it very annoying.

Of course my answer is always, "Given enough time and money, I can do anything". Now the fun part of the clients finding the right image. By the time they decide, the next 'fad' in homepages will have come and gone. :-)

@AUKev - Actually it's a lot easier to make a homepage like this - without all the usual clutter they want on the front page.
