Changed my hosting - Affiliate sales went up 40%!

I was with hostgator for the past year. About 6 months in, my sites started going down almost every month, sometimes down for longer then an entire 24 hours.

I would call support, they would do nothing. I think i got refunded like $5 once, but probably lost 100's of dollars because of the down time.

At one point my sites were going down EVERY SINGLE DAY for about 3 hours a day.

Did some research and made the switch to a solid hosting company and my traffic and sales have sky rocketed.

Moral of the story: Don't use cheap crappy hosting.

I've been with Hostgator for five years now. Sites only went down once in that time, and that only for less than a day.

Support have always been there for me, too, normally responding to techy stuff within 10 - 30 minutes.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience but, thankfully, I can't share it!

    That's a huge increase!
Can you share your new host? Is it shared or vps or something else?

I'm a fan of Name Cheap, good support! We used Host Gator for a couple sites in the past, but they weren't sales sites, and we only switched to keep our hosting and domain names with the same company. Blue Host is another one that seems reliable thus far.

Never do this, Lou: it's important to have them with two different companies. This thread (and a large number of others!) explain why: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7628717

The key words there are going to be "thus far". BlueHost, too, is now owned by the dreaded EIG, whose business model seems to be to take over hosting companies with former good reputations/sevice and consistently turn them into customer service nightmares.

I face the same problem with hostgator and moved to ipage. Later I came to know that hostgator n ipage are both sister sites and got the same problem.

After doing some re-search I am finally planning to go ahead with GreenGeeks. Hope they don't break my trust.

It surprises and saddens me, in such threads, to see people suggesting that others switch to Hostgator!

The phrase "Out of the frying-pan and into the fire" comes to mind.

Would it be too much to ask for a speed comparison?

HostGator vs. NameCheap. Epic speed test split test show down.

    Shared hosting vs. Shared hosting.

    VPS vs. VPS

    Who wins?

    Round one....

    FIGHT!

As I have said in response to a prior question here on the WF (http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...witch-one.html), Hosting companies now, generally speaking, do not provide the level of service that I believe is required. In other words, they are awful.

I do still have one site (just handling it for a friend until the contract expires) on Hostgator though and I have not had the downtime as stated above. But I have had support related issues.

Finally, all my domains are registered with Namecheap and I would never suggest having your domains registered with the same company that you host with.

        Just my opinion.

I recommend Search, Register and Transfer Web Domain Names and More for your hosting needs.
Since they are a small godaddy reseller, they have the same backend servers but less crowded so you get very fast page load times even for economy hosting.
I think their prices are also lower than godaddy last time I checked.

heard a lot of bad stuff about HG after its been sold. HG did a great job for resellers for many years. but it lost the credibility going into EIG hosts.

why not try a hosting WSO? or go with someone who is already into it?

Im very surprise to hear some people actually supporting Host gator. The only thing I like about them was the call in support, but even then the analyst were terrible and would close tickets that were not nearly resolved.

I even had trouble getting back my refund they would not close my account or issue a refund over the phone, and insisted that I submit a ticket. Nobody responded to the ticket for over a week.

I'm shocked at the terrible service and unreliable hosting. It was a nightmare experience and literary felt like a scam.

Who do you recommend instead, and how is the server speed in comparison to HG?

      Just wondering.

Honestly I highly doubt it has anything to do with the hosting I changed to, but pretty much all to do with very poor hostgator.

They marked 4 tickets as resolved for a 502 bad gateway error that would not go away. They kept telling me they knew the reason why but the error never went away and my sites went down every day for 8 days.

They literally lied to me on each ticket, until I said this is ridicules and changed hosting.

Then they lied to me about closing my account and issuing a refund, which pretty much never came until i stayed on the phone to speak to a manager who was really trying to avoid the issue.

They never posted any of these issues in the support forum or on their twitter accounts either, which goes to show that this is happening so often they are hiding the problems and not reporting them.

I would advise you to stay away at all costs from hostgator.

Huge down time is likely to affect any site's sales. And, this is true whether you are selling your own services or offering affiliate Amazon reviews. The down time discourages regular visitors who eventually get tired of showing up to see that error page. They just stop showing up and then you have to rebuild that traffic, only to have it happen again. Particularly, a problem for forum owners that rely on the generosity of the community for daily posts.

Everybody know that Hostgator used to be good, until they sold out to EIG which ruined everything!
Right now, Hostgator is a no-no including their sister company, Blue host! The 2 commpanies are owned by the same set of people with bad reputation!

I'm having an issue with Host Gator that in the middle of the day where my load times are extremely slow and then they pick up in the evening and the morning. Is this something that anyone else has experienced? Any ideas what could be causing this?

I am also starting to find a better option as hostgator is getting crappy this past months. Last 2 days I encountered 3 full hours downtime and the support did not give any explanation why.

I think your experience with HG depends on exactly where your sites are hosted.

I have 2 HG accounts. One is rock solid with 100% uptime. The other has constant outages with an average monthly uptime of around 96-97% (luckily I don't host anything that important on it).

If my main account starts to show signs of unreliability, I'll move it in a flash.

This is actually a good idea but how can we determine which server is better than the other? I am interested to know as I am not really comfortable moving my sites to another host not named hostgator. thanks

Any suggestions on where to go? I've been more active on my blog lately, so I've noticed it a lot more. The blog needs a little work, in terms of speed, but I'd like to get a rock solid host in conjunction with the coding changes. I can't imagine that speed isn't going to become more of an issue with google.

That is very interesting.. I'll have to try to move one of my sites to another server and see if there are any differences in sale volume.
