Unusual Question For Chocaholics

Hi

What does a square of American Chocolate weigh?
I've googled it but can't find an answer

Although it might seem strange this IS a money making question, for me.

    In some American cookbooks a square of chocolate seems to be used as a standard measure

    All those questions are relevant. The size of an ounce of chocolate will be the same - except if it is specialized and infused with air or other ingredients.

    You might be able to get an answer to your questions if you relate the calories of specific types of chocolate to their size and then work out how big you want this square to be related to the number of calories.

    While I am an avid chocoholic I also am cognizant of the number of calories in the particular chocolate I eat. For instance - 3 squares of the Belgian chocolate I love is about 210 calories - dense calories - can only eat one square

    Missed your response Michael - might be talking about Hershey bar chocolate or cooking chocolate. Standard cooking chocolate is Bakers and it seems I'm currently out (yes I sometimes get desperate). Might find the measurements or necessary info online for Bakers.

    That's more like it - I can't imagine it would mean anything without having an wieght or measurement equivalent for practical purposes.

    One square is almost certainly just an approximate probably given to make the recipe seem easy. Most recipes probably require more than one and would end up melted down to a measurable amount.

    Hhhmmm, now I'm hungry

    A square of chocolate refers to baking chocolate in a bar. that's not really edible unless it's melted or chopped with sugar added. each square is equal to one ounce of chocolate. it is usually sold in 8 ounce bars, wrapped in two four ounce pieces.

    Hope that answers your question. Also most cookbooks in the US have charts of equivalent measures in them, it sould be listed there, too.

    There is no standard "square" of American Chocolate. That's too broad a category.

    However, a square of Baker's, Hershey's and Ghirardelli baking (unsweetened) chocolate weighs 1 ounce, or 28 grams. I have those sitting in my cabinet.

    But I wouldn't assume that any random chocolate square is 1 ounce - I'd weigh it.

    Sorry, but a square of chocolate is one ounce. No matter how big it is I'll eat it until it becomes one ounce. If it starts out at one ounce then it "was" one ounce at one time. So as you see a square is one ounce.

    George did you know that if men eat a normal size bar of chocolate a week, they will add a year to their life, unless they have a problem with cholesterol.
