How you built your list is as important as the updates you send. If you built your list through swaps and digital freebies or bribes, chances are your list isn't worth much to you. But people will still pay you money to take a crack at your list.

The solution? Focus on buyers' lists instead.

    I agree although there are ways to convert freebie seekers into buyers... It is not easy though!
    Focusing on buyers is definitely a great strategy

    I agree for the most part. But you can monetize a freebie list by selling solo ads and promoting pay per lead and cpa offers. Even the freebie seekers can make you money if you monetize your list correctly.

    Obviously having a buyer's list is the way to go, but unless you can afford to buy highest-priced solos from buyer's lists or are a top notch product creator that can sell tons of copies of your product it could take forever to build up your numbers. As webmarke said you can still make money from giving away a free product. You can convert some of them to buyer's if you work at it with your auto responder sequence and free PPL programs and selling solo ads, so I vote for building your list in a variety of ways.

    drag them out of public toilets and send them over to my site, I will convert em (or a large enough portion to make it worth sending them)

    you send me 100,000 freebie seekers I will have a list of 5000 buyers by the end of the month. it makes me laugh this freebie seeker thing

      Me too.

      There's a myth about (I think it crept out of that rather questionable Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing) that giving people a freebie in exchange for their email address somehow makes them "freebie-seekers".

      The reality is - as so often - both more logical and admittedly a little more prosaic: it's the facts that (a) if someone's about to become a good, paying customer, giving them a free report in exchange for their email address doesn't change that: they're still about to become a good, paying customer; and (b) some of the people who really are intending to be just freebie-seekers at the point at which they opt in are also about to become good, paying customers, too (that part's called "email marketing").

      I agree 100% I built a large portion of my list from swaps and JV giveaways and the rest I built with solos and I make damn good money from my list. IMO, the term "freebie seeker" simply means someone who is looking for information for free. That being said, if you give them the info they are looking for free of charge and then you follow up with them and actually help them to achieve their goal, you will easily be able to turn them into a devoted buyer. I've done it time and time again I'm sure.

      Another thing that makes me laugh is the belief that only "tier 1" leads are worth anything. That is just not true. I have dozens, if not hundred of customers from non-tier 1 countries like India, Philippines, Singapore, etc. I have no problem adding non-tier 1 leads to my list. If anybody doesn't want theirs, send 'em my way please!

    I just wanted to add that it matters how you go about getting traffic to your squeeze page. If you are just buying from crap solo ad providers or ad swap with people who have a garbage list then that can be terrible quality. If you drive traffic to your squeeze page by giving away a free WSO or targeted PPC etc. some of these people could very well be buyer's of products that signed up for a free offer. I sign up for free offers from time to time, but it doesn't mean that I won't spend money on products.

    I sign up for freebies with no hesitation, and I'm also a very frequent buyer. I have been doing internet marketing for around 7 plus years, and I learn who's who and what's what from my barrage of emails. I think being on a handful of lists helps keep me in the loop, and again, I buy stuff just all the time

      Non-buyer does not equal freebie seeker.

      I agree whole heartedly that a list of buyers is what we all want. But just because someone doesn't buy from you does not mean that all they're after are freebies.

      Most people don't make a purchase on first contact with a business. If you throw their contact information away you are not giving them a chance to reach for the wallet when they are ready. Remember, it's all about the customer - it's not about you and your timetable.

      There are so many legitimate reasons who people don't click the "buy now" button and many of them are outside your control as an Internet Marketer. Nurture your list of non-buyers and convince them that when they are ready to buy, you are their only logical choice in the niche!

      It just means that you're getting an e-mail address from someone who has bought something. Like if you sell an info product and get the buyer's e-mail address in the transaction process via your auto responder. There are people who will sell you solo ads to their buyer's list, but there are hard to find and usually much more expensive.

    let me tell you a story about freebie seekers

    My company was the first to do live broadcasts of an offline event.
    we never promoted this until 48 hours before the event was due to open, obviously we wanted bums on seats in
    the room.

    we originally offered 3 days of live broadcasts plus the physical DVD's of the speakers presentations for $97
    which was the same price as the live tickets.

    we got 3 sales....

    so with 24 hours to go i changed the offer to free viewing of the live event, and made the oto just the DVD's for
    $197 (thats double the original offer)

    we had 1000 freebie seekers sign up, 30% bought the OTO (at double price mind you) and 60% of the sales
    at the event ranging from 2k to 5k packages were bought from people on the live stream.

    The person who bought the most by far was also from the live stream.

    you work that out in dollars from freebie seekers

    A freebie seeker is just a customer who hasn't bought yet

    PS: all that from a list built from traffic exchanges and safelists and viral mailers, another source of so called
    rubbish traffic with only freebie seekers in them HAHAHAHAHA

      This is a wonderful case of the power of giving value first. A lot of marketers
      are buying into this model as the market is getting more skeptical and tougher
      to persuade to part with their money. So you give them the value first and
      say, pay afterwards.

      And I assume that you had no refunds. (That would be weird.)

  • Take a look at Stansbary (part of Agora) he ran the VSL "End of America" in the financial niche, the only way on his email list is to buy the $47 info product at the end of the long VSL. Then you get piches every day for some stuff that is like up to 3K but all over the price list and you get every day a VSL if you cancel you get LFSL. I think it's brilliant he doesn't bother with freebie people and focuses on real valuable people on his list.

    Even if you manage to find a list of someone else's proven buyers, you won't know if they are your proven buyers until they buy something. Until then, you have no way of knowing which ones are actually freebie collectors (and they are out there) and which ones are simply not ready to buy yet or haven't seen the right offer yet.

    As Mr. Puddy so eloquently demonstrated, if you have the right offer at the right time, there is no such thing as "garbage" traffic.

    That's not to say that there aren't traffic sources you shouldn't bother with, simply because they've proven to not be responsive (or responsive enough) to your approach or offers. It doesn't mean the traffic is "bad", it just means that there are other sources that work better for you and you should focus your energy on those.
