A quick question for the kindle publishers

Hey guys,

My latest book is nearly finished and I need to buy some stock photos online to use in the book.

The book will be published as a 6 x 9" Hard Copy initially.

I found some images I would like to buy and there are different sizes available.

They are:

533x800 px - 72 dpi
1067x1600 px - 300 dpi
2000x3000 px - 300 dpi
3456x5184 px - 300 dpi

They are all Jpeg images.

My question is:

Which of the above sizes should I buy to use in my 6 x 9" hard copy book

Thanks in advance guys

Alan

If you're going print, stick with 300 dpi at a minimum. 72 dpi is screen resolution.

Beyond that, at a glance the 2000x3000 matches the 6x9's 2:3 ratio spot on. The others might also, but I'm too lazy right now to hunt up my calculator.

I agree with what John McCabe mentioned above, but if you use MS-Word 2007 or higher as your source file editor, keep in mind that Word will automatically compress your pictures in a file which could bring down the quality of the images in your final print version of the book.

To prevent compression of images in a file in Word 2007 and higher, go to File, Options (Word 2010), select "Advanced" on the left and go to the "Image Size and Quality" section. At the top, select your current document (you can do it later on for all new documents there as well). Then tick the "Do not compress images in file" checkbox and click OK and then save your file.

I have used in my kindle e-books tiny images. Get the kindle previewer. That way, you can see em.

Please do not waste your money. After all, you will need it to do some promos.

Do you need extended licenses? Those can be expensive. Make sure.

BTW, I have found that books that are ALL TEXT sell just as much as those full of images. Hey, just saying.

I now only use one image. That would be for my cover. Yeah, we still need a picture for that one.

I usually go with the 1067x1600 px images when I have the choice, but that's just because I'm selling the books in print as well as on the Kindle. If I was just selling Kindle books, I'd probably go with the smaller and less expensive image.

Seobro brings up a good point. Make sure you double check the licensing on the site you get the images from. The licenses differ from site to site and some sites require extended licenses if you want to use their images in e-books and as part of your cover. At $50 or more a pop, the extended licenses can really add up in a book that's heavy on images.
