The way it works is like this. If you have 20 urls (backlinks) you need (should) get them indexed so google finds them. You can either A, ping each backlink, all twenty of them or you can make one rss feed containing all 20 of those links and ping that new link ) rss feed once. You can use Links 2 RSS - Convert a list of URLs to RSS feeds to place many links and create one new url AKA feed. Don't put more than 35 links per feed, google doesn't like that too much.
