I am currently involved in posting backlinks to gain traffic. I have been told that while you can gain traffic from backlinks that it also boosts your page ranking. So what is more important for success, page ranking or traffic?

Hello Everyone,
I am concerned in the area of organic traffic. I have noticed that it is hard to gain targeted traffic without paying for it.
Is it still possible to gain unique, targeted, traffic organically? Or is organic traffic dead?
I have tried traffic exchanges, and as soon as I don't put enough hours in a day to it, the traffic stops. Is there anything better than traffic exchanges to gain traffic?
