Default Personal Power

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” – Steve Jobs

You are where ever you are because of the CHOICES you have made. No one else is responsible for the way you feel or act.

In our daily to do list, we allow external elements to effect our life. This happens because we get consumed in managing so many things. By doing so we give up our personal power. For example, an ecstatic drivers cuts you off, you flip them the bird and nasty things on them.

Imagine that for a sec. Some random person just cut you off and you got upset. You will NEVER see that person ever again but yet their action has made you get so upset.

The other day, it was raining outside. I decided to stick my hand out and feel the cool water trickle down my hand. “Get your hands back in” my mother yelled. To her it seamed childish. But on the other hand, rain brings a cool breeze and replenishes the earth.

You have to break out of the victim mentality – “Why does this happen to me?” “I did not do any of this”. The victim mentality always ask “Why me?” instead of “What can I do to make things better”. The victim refuses to take charge of a situation and blames others for their feelings.

If this is you or sometimes feel this way just remember: YOU FEEL THE WAY YOU DO BECAUSE OF YOURSELF. Everything is of your own doing.

See where I am headin’ with this. Sometimes life gets hard. Its supposed to be that way. If it was all candies and rainbows then there would be no fun. The important element is HOW you get out of the rut.

Take action

Get honest with yourself. Ask these questions and journal your answers.
  • What is bothering you the most right now?
  • Who are you blaming for that feeling?
  • How is this effecting your life?

Another great list from the livestrong.com website:
  • Acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life.
  • Accepting that you are responsible for what you choose to feel or think.
  • Accepting that you choose the direction for your life.
  • Accepting that you cannot blame others for the choices you have made.
  • Tearing down the mask of defense or rationale for why others are responsible for who you are, what has happened to you and what you are bound to become.
  • The rational belief that you are responsible for determining who your are, and how your choices affect your life.
  • Pointing the finger of responsibility back to yourself and away from others when you are discussing the consequences of your actions.
  • Realizing that you determine your feelings about any events or actions addressed to you, no matter how negative they seem.

I am going to copy and paste the content of the file in a file and save it into the motivation section of my computer, where i always keep such inspiring stuff.Nothing could be farther from the truth "especially acknowledging that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life" and "Pointing the finger of responsibility back to yourself and away from others when you are discussing the consequences of your actions".

Well this is all well and good- to know our lives are a direct result of our own actions. But this is a pretty positive thing too I would say. I have a home, a family that loves me, a great business where I work for myself. Am I super rich and rule the world? No, but I am a happy person and have become this way because of the choices I've made and the actions I've taken.
We don't always have to beat ourselves up do we..?

This is such an interesting and inspirational read. Thank you for sharing. This is why we always have to be smart about the decisions that we make because we'll never know the impact that it will bring to our life.

Hey there...

Thank hamburglar for your encouraging message. I can relate with most of what you've said & I have earlier learned to be responsible for whatever situation I find myself at any point in time. It's one of the qualities of people who're great or destined for greatness & I had to force myself to learn it. I'm not perfect yet but hope to keep working on it.

Thank you again & thanks to all d other contributors too...

I agree to this 100%. I beat myself up a lot, especially with my workout/diet routine. If I miss one day, I get really hard on myself and it effects my whole week.

I am trying to stay positive and change my choices of mental thoughts.

Its tough sometimes.

I want to thank you guys for the great motivation you have provided me. This is my very first article on the web that I have published. Normally I get others to write it because I get insecure about my writing skills. But I had to face my fear head on.

You guys have made my week. I am smile from ear to ear. Thank you guys.

It's good you came clean hambuglar. Also, taking that step to write your first article has helped a lot of people here & like a ripple they will spread it all around. Keep up the good work and don't you stop writing those articles now! ok? Keep posting new ones as often as you can & you'll be amazed how many people find you work helpful...
