A few weeks ago, I gave one of my mentors my customary phone call to check in, see how he's doing, catch up, etc. He asked me if I felt fulfilled in my business. Fulfilled? I'm successful, but what about fulfilled? He reminded me of something I'd lost track of during the last few years between the explosion of my business and moving from place to place: simply be here now. It seems like every day people intentionally create imbalance in their lives. How many times have you told yourself, "I'll make plenty of money today so I can play tomorrow"? It seems like I'm always thinking about work while playing, and thinking about play while working. Isn't it funny how the grass always seems to be greener on the other side? The point, I guess, is that I always find myself worrying about the next step. What am I going to do at such-and-such a time and day, when what is really important is enjoying the here and now. If you can immerse yourself in your everyday interactions with family, friends, coworkers and the world around you, while still remaining focused and driven to accomplish the things you want, you can achieve a much more fulfilled life. |

I can't even begin to count how many times I've caught myself doing this...and the number of times I HAVEN'T caught myself is exponentially higher! Creating a balance is harder than it sounds, but the results make everything so much better for yourself in the end. There's certainly something to be said for a strong work ethic and rabid desire to succeed, but never at the cost of your health or relationships with the ones you love. Great post. -DareDevil

I've found myself working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week recently because I really want to push for success. Right now that success means financial success because I'd like to take advantage of the weak housing market while the ecomony is still suffering. Focusing almost purely on the work right now, I could probably do with stepping back a little though. |

I find some of the greatest joys in life when I'm able to slow down and appreciate what is right there in front of me. A few months ago I went to Zion National Park in Utah for a get-a-way. My wife and I ate lunch at a snack bar sitting outside. The weather was perfect. A cool 68 degrees and a clear blue sky. It was the most incredible feeling just sitting there surrounded by beautiful and majestic mountains out in the middle of no where. We sat there listening to the birds and enjoying the scenery and the peacefulness. We sat and walked around that area for around two hours just taking it all in. No phones, no computers, no rushing to do anything. We even saw a few deer drinking by a stream. It was an incredible day because we cleared our heads and took the time to enjoy it. I'm glad I've learned to do this because I wasn't brought up this way. My dad was always in a rush to go and do the next thing that we never took the time to stop and smell the roses so to speak. To this day I'm still trying to get him to slow down and enjoy the small pleasures in life. |

John, I really liked all the other posts, but I absolutely LOVE yours! This is truly great... to be able to get away like that, with no computers, phones, no need to look at the time... we should all be able to REALLY do that even if it's just once or twice a month. I'm sure once we're back home, it will be a lot easier to concentrate on work and be more efficient. Dagmar

Very good. I must admit that I am av very guilty of doing so. Right at this moment as I am writing this I am holding in my lap my three-year son looking through a book and reading this post. Just not right. I will try to use this advice. |

Great posts Tandren & John! It can be particularly hard to strike a balance when you're just starting out on the path to doing this full-time. Right now, I've a part-time job, three small kids & am also chomping at the bit to learn all I can about IM, so trying to divvy up the time is challenging to say the least... but God loves a trier!

In order to create success we constantly need to Zoom In and Out of our businesses. Sometimes we need to focus only on the now, but later on, we need to zoom out and watch the whole picture. ~Igor |

Thank you for the insight. I too understand living in the NOW. I sometimes fall back into thinking of TOMORROW and not today. I remember when I was 24 years old. When I was so happy to be alive. I enjoyed every day and expected and felt everything was going to be okay. And it did. I am getting back to being happy for today. So thank you for your insight! Have a wonderful day. |

Thank you for that, I do believe it's the BIG secret to happiness, being in the present moment. There is nothing wrong in the present moment, only life in its purest form. Have a nice day, enjoy it, it might be your last, we never know, ~ JoeDRL |

Yup happieness and fulfillment and success are different things. Sometimes we get caught up in the success of money and are not actually happy nor fulfilled. I was one.

Great advice. One doesn't have contentment when he or she is always worrying about the past, or anticipating the future. By being here now, one has contentment, and thereby happiness. |

Yeah it's always good to stay grounded no matter what material gain you get. Balance just seems to be the key to human life ... no matter how much you want to go against that sometimes ahaha

This is so true. My 3 year old daughter wakes up everyday and wants to know what we will be doing tomorrow. I always tell her to worry about today first! But when I think about it i'm always worrying about what to do next. Any wonder my daughter does the same! Need to stop and smell the roses from time to time.

What most not understand is once one finds a way to be in the moment while away from work they discover that while at work they are much more affective. Simply because of balance.

some of the most important messages are in the space between the sentences. this is the same space between breaths. when you take notice of it. it will transform you into the now. for that is the only place that it exists. Great advice for certain and turned into a great thread and a fun read. thanks for the post. |

Planning for the future will always bring in anxieties. It's important to be able to pull back and sit in the "now". It's difficult, but it can be done! |
