I may seem a bit pesimistic here, but I just saw a thread saying "ignore the negatives" when starting a new business, and I want to put this into context in regards to IM and online businesses.

Obviously, if it is all negative, like his example of "I was reading an article in a property magazine about a young property developer. When he went to buy his first property everyone told him it was a bad idea and he shouldn't do it...now he has a 14 million dollar property portfolio and all those negative people are now asking him to teach them how he did it." This normally happens. But this was mainly all negatives, and this is one success story, but it's not all like that.

Which brings me onto my point. Will all of this positivity and many many stories of how different people are making money online, it really pulls the wool over people's eyes about that fact that is is NOT easy, it is NOT easier than a normal job, and you will NOT be working 1 hour a day and raking in 6 figure incomes like people say, and if people are, it's not within a year or two, it probably took 5-10 years+ realistically, even if years of it were research.

Now of course, a few people might have done this, and like the example above he has a 14 million dollars worth, BUT not everyone - or anywhere near everyone, succeeds like this, or everyone would be a millionaire.

So please, can people make an effort to give a neutral opinion in future, instead of all positive or all negative. I wish people were more honest.

Now fair enough, you can't start a business thinking "I am going to fail", "This isn't going to work", becuase why bother at all. But YOU CAN'T start a business thinking "I WILL make thousands of dollars online", "My business WILL grow into 6-8 figures like other's" and that the quotes given such as the one off 14 million dollar house portfolio will not happen to many people. If you start like that you will give up quickly when you arn't succeeding.

I don't know the full story of the house and 14 million dollars, but in my opinion either he was either clever, had a LOT of time, and/or had money to start it off in the first place, which he obviously did to buy a house. Or he was lucky. It could have been something else of course, not ruling that out.

So, don't start a business, or IM with negative thoughts, and also don't start thinking you are going to be making tonnes of money. Start small and make targets trying, for example ((1) a website (2) an online shop/ebay shop etc.)
a. 1). get traffic on your website 2). make listings
b. 1, 2). make your first sale
c. 1, 2). make £5 per day of sales
d. 1). increase rankings in google 2). increase profits+stock
etc.

These are just examples but soon if you think about increasing your business it takes time. You are not going to be ranked 1 on google, with hundreds of sales and making thousands of dollars within a month. Maybe some people have as a one off, but they probably got lucky.

I hope people agree with me, and sorry if I sound very negative.

Well said, to elaborate a tadge as to people earning a lot of money with little work. I do agree that this can be done BUT it can take a lot of work to get to this position.

So whether that means re-wiring yourself and learning many skills and mindsets or some people just naturally have good qualities that make them money. Don't be jealous of them. You just have to change the way you think and what you know.

I agree, be "realistic" (i hate that word sometimes lol) and set small goals to meet your big goal. Make sure u achieve the small goals though first.

I find a lot of people that say "ignore the negatives." I also find that a lot these people ignore a lot of important stuff too and are rather unsuccessful as a result.

I much prefer to communicate with my team / partners / etc this: "See the negativity and find a way beyond it."

Not to get into the whole abundance mentality thing too deep, but I am sure the original intent of the statement "ignore the negatives" is to help shift perspective to what matters, to priorities, to moving forward. Getting through the hard work, reaching the next goal, learning in the process, improving and refining and repeating for more highly leveraged successes helps dissolve negativity.

People just seem to readily misinterpret the meaning, stay in the lazy place and expect that if they just feel good then good things will magically happen.

And that's why motivational speakers are paid so well. It's easier to give somebody some money to hype you up than it is to learn what it takes to take the next steps toward what you really want (if you've even taken the time to figure that one out).

In the beginning it's a herculean task, whether or not you have outside help; hence the phenomenal failure rates of business startups, romantic relationships, and anything else that requires concentrated effort. I don't know why you wouldn't start a business thinking and believing you would make tons of money. What's the point if you go into it thinking that you're only going to do okay? Every venture I have ever started I thought I was going to make tons of money. I have been wrong several times and just a couple times I have been right (okay, not tons of money, but six figures annually at least).

I'm pretty sure that I will start dozens of projects, businesses, ventures, etc. over the next few decades and I'm only going to do each one if I feel I'm going to make a killing. I only have to be right every now and then to be happy.

I agree to some extent, going into business with the idea of making tons of money is no bad thing .....

IF ....

you accept that the journey towards the big money will be a tough one with many failures and lessons to be learned. That it is not likely to happen overnight and that none of it will come easy!

All this just makes it all the more worthwhile when it does happen.

I agree with both TyBrown and Tracey, but I think that starting a business with the aim to make TONS of money will make those who are earning money, and even decent amounts think to themselves that they arn't making enough.
