Wow...IM Lessons from the Julia / Julie movie
Besides walking out of the movie full of red hot desire to cook up a gourmet storm using real melt in your mouth butter and delicious cream...or just fly to France...
There were some gems of IM lessons in there:
1. The importance of the title for Julia Child's famous book - the publisher HATED it and demanded Julia Child to come into her office to brainstorm a better title using an "old fashioned whiteboard" - index cards with one word on each pin stuck to a wall - moving them around for different titles.
the end result "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" (hmm....sounds like a familiar headline or title swipe file now doesn't it?)
2. Persistence pays off! Julia spent years and years writing this book! Seriously over 4 solid years and many times with a low confidence self - esteem that Americans would like this book!
Then the first publisher said no and didn't like it!
As entrepreneurs - persistence is a must for us...whether it be split testing, building your list, training a new outsourced person, getting clients in your offline consulting business, building your brand etc. - This one skill will make you successful.
Thank goodness for the Internet to shorten the publishing time from 4 years to for some...4 hours to publish a book (ebook for instance)!
3. Following your passion - Julia at first tried "hat-making" and she really didn't like it...she tried a few things before her husband suggested to take cooking classes! Then her persistance paid off as Le Cordon Bleu - the head person didn't want to let her in because she was an American and a female!
4. Lessons on Partnerships - In the movie, the book was written by 3 ladies...and Julia discovered one partner was simply not 'pulling her own weight' so that only 2 of the 3 partners worked their tail off writing the book! There was an interesting scene over lunch in a French cafe where they wanted to tell that partner she wasn't getting 1/3rd of the royalties or recognition because she wasn't doing any work!
Unless you have had some fortunate 'partners' Aladdin's lamp, in IM or the biz world - this is so common and has happened to me so many times...thus the need for being very 'crystal clear' on roles and responsibilities, profit splits, what expenses will be shared and incurred etc. - they say "Contracts make good friends" for a reason!
5. Stay positive! While adventuring in France, Julia was always bubbly, having fun making the French warm up to her smile and personality...whereas other folks were saying they are negative...so there you have it - a postive energy will usually overtake the negative enegy and infuse that person with joy! (now that is my take on it! )
Would love to hear your thoughts on this! Cheers, Maria
