By nature humans are hard wired for happiness. That's why we get all nervous and jerky when someone messes with our ability to be happy.

Hi EIH888.

I would quantify happiness this way:

First and foremost authentic happiness depends on totally intrinsic (inside) things.
All that stuff that's outside of you (extrinsic) is capable of manipulating your state of happiness but that's more of an interruption from what I'd call 'media' (Everything your 5 senses can detect outside of you is media).

Happiness, real happiness, comes from the gut. That's where you feel it most. There are valid physiological reasons for that but I can't really get into it here. (My blog has that.)

Real happiness doesn't go up on a big high and only slightly modulates downward on any given day. Steadyness is a feature of real happiness.

Having real happiness should not be confused with satisfaction. In other words it's possible to be happy but not necessarily satisfied.

Hope this makes sense,

David

My number one priority I would have to say happiness...

I would have to say if I'm happy what else can you ask for, happiness is what everyone wants, money may be happiness for some...

As long as everything in my life is in order and I'm happy, life is good..

I think that, with all the news reports about rich people and their troubles, maybe more and more people are beginning to realize that riches and wealth are different things.

Riches are material things and the happiness quotient on those is low because of its short life.
Wealth is about having things like good friends and loved ones, integrity, security in one's self that is not dependent on the economy or other factors in the environment.

We all need money. That's a given. But have you ever noticed that the very rich almost always feel they must find ways to give it away in order to experience the joy and happiness you and I get from taking the dog for a walk with our spouse.

You're all doing a great job here. Keep it up.

It's fortunate that you asked for other priorities than the two you listed. I think that it's a really interesting detail about human beings that when we think of happiness or what our top priorities should be, money and time for leisure come immediately to mind.

Very few people ever mention making their job satisfaction, love life, or relationships with friends and family a priority.

Consider which memory you would rather have on your death bed:

1. That big business deal that netted you a small fortune.
2. The time you got a bigger annual bonus than anyone else in your department.
3. That time that you volunteered to help feed families on the street at Thanksgiving.
4. The time that you and your spouse were sitting on the sofa and your three-year-old sat between you and said, "I love you mommy! I love you daddy!"

Now don't misunderstand me. I have no problem with making a lot of money. Things like item numbers 1 & 2 above could be great memories.

My point is that when considering happiness or setting priorities, too many people don't even consider anything but financial achievements or at least money is ranked so far above everything else that things like numbers 3 & 4 above are nearly forgotten.

Very nice reply rick. Very thoughtful and sensitive. I think you've added a certain poignancy to the connection between happiness, and all those 'intrinsic' things I wrote about earlier.

I also like the down to earth tone of your examples.

For me happiness has always been the #1 priority, money is a necessity, we all need money,
but money is a tool, like a shovel is a tool...that's the way the world works.

In Canada where I live there is plenty of money...it's Happiness that we are short off.

The truly happy people I know don't have "happiness" as a goal in life. They aren't the most ambitious nor the very poor - they are often those who live a simpler lifestyle but their needs are met in terms of income and time. The priorities are not "more" but "sufficient" as far as money goes.

I don't think it's possible to become happy because you wish for it or strive for it. The idea that happiness is a constant in any life is a fallacy as it comes and goes - and often at times least expected.

But to enjoy fully the moments of happiness you have in life its best to live in a way that allows happiness to happen. You can't do that if you are worried about a roof over your head, or food for your family.

Get your life in order so you have the basic "stuff" you need covered and be thankful for what you have - happiness will find you.

My main priority right now is making more money which will allow me to achieve the tremendous goals that I have set for myself. I have all the time freedom which allows me to attend all of my sons' basketball games. When I worked previously worked for a Corporation I was unable to that without begging for that day off to see them play. Happiness means different things to different people and for me it is peace of mind and spending time with my family.

EXACTLY.

I've been arguing with nearly every post in this thread because everyone says that money can't buy happiness. Yet, I know that if I had enough money to get the bills paid, fix the broken heater (esp now that Winter is approaching), fix my chronic pain situation and actually be able to buy the grandkids Christmas and birthday presents (just to see their faces light up), I'd be so freaking happy (again), you wouldn't recognize me.

I've wanted to answer your poll with "more money," in spite of how hypocritical or shallow it sounds.

But Kay's post made me realize that it isn't about having MORE money... it's about having a "sufficient" amount of money, enough to get those stresses off my back so that I can return to the happiness I once felt.

Getting my life in order WITHOUT sufficient funding, however, is nigh impossible. Does this mean I am doomed to live the rest of my life unhappy? That can't be right...

well none of your options God is first then self improvement. If you live your life that way everything else will come in time. With out God you wouldn't have to worry about any of this so always God first Thank him for all you have. Then work on yourself better you better who you are and when you do these two things it will all fall into place.

Hi,

I am going to say that money is my first requrement right now, but I also know that happiness is not dependant on money, but time can be made more available, in a manner if speaking, when you have moeny to pay others for services, etc.

However, I would say moeny first.

However, I know I need to be happy all the time, and that is something within me.

All the best

Martin

Great reply Kay. I'm not sure how I should tabulate your answer but I think you're for "happiness". You just don't believe it should be one's goal. Perhaps you're right.

Happiness, I believe, should be something that's readily available to you 24/7. Like a diamond in your pocket you can choose to look at anytime. Or not. The feeling of a solidness in the gut that's always there and presents a kind of joy to you whenever you do something good for others is the source of happiness for me. It's so self-sustaining that I can carry on with my day and it's just there. Always

It's like chewing-gum-and-driving kind of simple.

It's true that worry can impede happiness but if it's there, as I've just described, then it tends to buffer the stress of such dire conditions and that causes happiness to be there even when it doesn't look like it's apropos.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks again.

For me, its got to be family happiness but that probably means: for them to stop working! - So no. 3 - more money and the rest would probably follow.

I suppose, ultimately, I'd like to be happy. And it may sound weird but to be happy I need to make more money! That sounds empty but if you knew the whole story it would not be.

Firstly, in the modern age you generally need enough money to survive. Note I say 'enough' rather than a lot. My aim is to earn enough money that I don't have to worry about it any more and then get on with those things money can't buy - but they do need allocated time. So money can buy time.

As you have mentioned, happiness is a discovery. I therefore don't even consider it in the same way I do money. I think you cannot be happy if it is conditional. 'If I had more money, I would be happy.' 'If I found a loving partner, I would be happy.' In my mind you decide to be happy where you are. It is the discovery that you decide to be happy NOW. I find I am at my happiest when I am moving forward so I ensure I develop every day (and that is so easy to do).

So, yes, more money leads to more time but I can decide to have happiness already.

I think that makes sense.....
I'm not sure I'm following your thinking here. It looks like you're saying that you have happiness already so money comes forward in your selection of priorities.

Have I got that right?

David

Funny how this works sometimes. If you say you need more money to be happy then your happiness level will go up and down like a yoyo depending on your income.

Personally, I'm not satisfied (there's too much pain in the world for that) but I'm happy.

My number one would be Happiness.

Even if I get everything else but I lack happiness...well, what`s the point then...

Happiness No-Doubts, i worked in the niche for sometime its a populated niche.

BE-DO-HAVE is the way the universe functions, This can be understood only by Humans, hence we are called HUMAN-BEINGS, because we are BEING every moment, there is no other species in the world that is called Being, like dog-being, cat-being, etc, they are just called cats, dogs, etc :-)

Besides Being the right way is the key to happiness and happiness is the key to everything - Time, Money, Love, Fame, Power or any desire.

Happiness, in my mind, is a decision to take where you are. You decide to discover happiness in whatever you are doing now - as in the story of 'Acres Of Diamonds'. I guess gratitude is a large part of that.

Happiness is then fuelled by moving forward (not stagnating where you are) towards goals which then include money and the security, time and the benefits that can bring.

I am happy now because I appreciate what I have got and where I am going. Who I am and who I am becoming.

Money can clear time for you to enjoy the things 'that money can't buy.'

I think what I am saying is happiness is not quantifiable but money is.
Let me just back up here and say that happiness is not a physical thing like money is. Therefor it's really hard to "quantify" it by using the same boxing terms.

The theory that happiness is fueled by whatever we accomplish is an indication to me that the type of happiness you are referring to is only a cerebral (head-based) happiness not authentic ethereal (gut-based) happiness.

One type (cerebral) rises and falls depending on external happenings the other (ethereal) is much more stable. This is why we see young children playing outside even in a war zone.

Can authentic happiness be a goal? It's a search. When you reach the end of your search (my clients do it in just one day by using my H.E.R.O. eMachine) then you can say that you've reached your goal.

Cheers!

Great observation here. So true I think. Helping is giving of yourself. In the universe, like in the quantum world, everything is topsy turvy. You give away - and you get back in return.

Thanks.

#2 for me. TIME

I am working my arse off doing a day job + IM in spare time, so that, ironically I will earn myself more time in the future. The idea is to work 2-3 days and earn enough to live off. What will I do for the other 2 days? Well thats my choice but I think it could be more enjoyable IM (e.g. making videos etc.) or self development, or being with nature, or helping other people become successful.

I will arrange these things in ascending order according to my priority_
1) More time
2) More money
3) More success
4) More happiness
I believe if you have enough time to work hard you will earn more money , more money means more success and if you are successful, you will be definitely happy, happier and happiest.

Happiness is def the way to go here.
It's arguably the meaning of life yet so many are so unhappy. Pretty lame if you ask me
